Post -Op time off work?

Recommended Posts

How much time off work will I need to take post-op? I'm a NICU nurse and spend 12 hours a day on my feet. No heavy lifting or anything strenuous tho. Had one lady tell me she was sleeved on Friday and went back to work on Monday... Dang!

No way I could have done that!!! I'm a 911 Dispatcher so mostly at a desk so I went back after 2 weeks. The first few days were long, I got tired easy. I wasn't worried about the stress of the job just getting up, ready & getting there! You have a long & busy job, I'd take as much time as you could. That's just me though! Good luck!

I had surgery on Friday and went back to work on Monday. I was very motivated during my two night hospital stay, walking as much as possible. When I am not traveling, I work from home. I was fatigued the first few days, and catching a 20 minute nap during my lunch hour for the first three days or so helped a lot.

I know everyone is different and it is important to listen to your body (not to mention your surgeon).

I am planning 3 weeks and have a desk job with no required lifting. If I feel great I will go back earlier.

12 hour days sound very long!

I'm a teacher so although I'm on my feet it's only 7 hours and I can sit if needed... I'm hoping to go back ASAP or getting really lucky and this process will go quickly and ill get a kind surgeon who will schedule me on one of the Holliday breaks!!!!

I planned to go back 10 days (calendar days) after surgery. I am pretty hardy usually but the surgery, adjusting to eating, and need for afternoon naps made it too hard. I went back at 18 days and felt like that was soon enough. It was nice to take a little time to adjust to my new life with out a lot of onlookers. I have had very few if any bumps in the road. I am at 12 weeks.

My short term disability approved me for 4 weeks!! I'm taking the whole time since its paid and that a way I have plenty of time to get my new food plan under control. I wasn't able to walk a whole bunch without my larger incision starting to hurt after a while until very end of week two.

Indigochild i would take off 6 weeks. I am a pharmacist and i work on the overnight. I do the tech and pharmacists job because its only me. My pharmacy is located adjacent to an emergency room. I told my doctor and he said he would take me off of work for 6 weeks. I stand on my feet 10 hours and more. So if i were you at least 6 weeks. You want your sleeve to fully heal before starting work again. You surely dont want to get back to work and start having issues as far as healing. This can set you back. So take some time off if you can. Congrats you are gonna do well.

I'm taking your advice, keglenne. My PCP advises at least 4 weeks for proper healing, and I'm not quite as young and resilient as some of these ladies here, so I'm thinking having a little extra time might not be a bad idea! Thank you so much.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
