Always had a lot of belly fat....it's my body's makeup, does this get better as you lose?

Recommended Posts

I feel you' date=' Disco! No matter how small I've been, it always looks like my lower tummy has a boner. A "FUPA," as the kids are calling it nowadays. I call it my "bell-erection". My pants literally hang off of it, even when they've gotten so loose in the butt and thighs I'd swear they were about to drop. When I push it in with my hands, it changes my entire physique and I don't even look heavy anymore. I'm so sick of carrying fat there, if the pooch is still there when I'm at goal, it's off to the surgeon I go![/quote']

I do that too! I pull it up and out of the way and think I can just cut this off and be fine lol not so much

Totally!!! I've actually had dreams of cutting it off. Very weird dreams.

Same here- it's so weird to realize how fat my belly makes me look. I am wearing 8's now and realizing that even at a size 8- I look fat is NOT cool. I look pretty decent in clothes, but naked- not so much. Ill post a belly pic when I get home

I have a bulge both below and above my belly button! The one above is starting to deflate and get wrinkly. The lower one adds 2 pants sizes compared to my relatively skinny legs.

Ooooh yes, I always say how I would probably wear a couple sizes down if it wasn't there. My husband thinks its weird that I wear my pants so high but I have to tuck it in! I told him you don't know what it's like to start off with pants and undies over you're stomach, only to have them continuously roll down to the "lower level". I start off smooth and tucked in then look like I'm smuggling tubes of meat. Wow. It felt great to say that for some reason. Hahaha

Guys, I share your pain. I have ALWAYS had the overhang onto the pubis. Even as a young child. Never tucked in shirts. Wore control briefs to disguise it. Used to kneed and roll it in my hands, pulling it out, wishing I could just cut it off with a bread knife (yeah, that makes me sound psycho).

The thing is, I am an apple shape and I have yet to have surgery. Consequently, it scares the bejesus out of me as to how god-awful its going to look after weight loss. I was told years ago by a doctor that no amount of exercise would get rid of it.

As much as I've loathed it all my life because its been there forever; its a warming, squidgy and familiar part of me. Like an old friend. That I love and hate at the same time. Its been there that long, it has its own well-worn crease. A cut line, if you will. I don't know about these surgeons. Masters in the craft of surgical medicine - or glorified seamstresses?!

My mum would shudder at some of the patchwork quilt jobs I've been seeing on YouTube recently. I could just imagine her saying 'well, that person didn't cut the pattern and tack the garment before sewing very well, did they?!'

I don't know why I just told you all that. I should go to bed!

Madame, You're with people that understand! I would never have shared my thoughts with my friends who have never experienced what we're talking about. It feels great to be understood! :)

Thanks Coco, it does indeed. To be honest, I share most of my bizarre thoughts, most of the time. Just maybe not ones so personal. After all, how could you even bring in to general conversation 'yes, I have a big belly that hangs like a once pregnant cats and if you stretched it out enough, you could more than likely cover a sofa with it!'. Some segue's are impossible to achieve - even for me! :D x

I've got a hanging pannus already and I'm still preop -- I know it will only get worse! I've already begun documenting with my pcp the skin rashes and fungal infections so that I can get that portion of my plastics paid for by insurance. I've reconciled myself with the need for ps... it's not just a vanity thing, it's also a hygiene thing for me.

Hey, if I'm going to get carved up (which is inevitable), I'm going the whole hog. Boobs like Pamela Anderson's and a stomach like Usain Bolt's! Bring it on! :D

You are describing my exact build!

I have a photo of me at 2 years old with the under the belly button stomach "pooch" as I call it. Like you, was never comfortable tucking in or wearing a belt, even when I was thin in HS/college because of that damned "pooch"!

Two pregnancies, two C-sections and many pounds lost have made that area even worse. (Insert huge sigh here.) I have been exercising a lot so I am not flabby as I lose, but the "pooch" area is not rebounding as I hoped. It is certainly smaller, but is now hanging down and just looks ridiculous. My upper abs are fine and I would feel comfortable showing them off, but the lower, WOW - not good!

I think after a year or so at my goal weight, if it still looks like a disaster, I am going to "reward" myself with some plastic surgery so that area no longer looks like a deflated, hanging down beach ball. I’d like to feel like I have a “normal” shape after the weight is gone. Good luck to you as you lose your weight and keep us updated on your “pooch” as the weight comes off! Hugs - Shelley

Take a look at my before and after photos in my profile - I was the queen of the big gut!

I will never have a small little waist, but in clothes, my tummy isn't too bad now that i am at goal.

I am getting plastics because WHOA - I have extra skin in that tummy area. I don't know what results I personally will get, but, looking at other before and afters, it makes a hue difference.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
