I'm on the sleeved side! After learning that I had lost over 10 pounds on the preop liquid, I felt really good! Surgery was quick! Follow up with the surgeon was with my family and also quick. Also the FIRST thing I asked from my mom when I got to the room, was Chapstick! Ahhhhhhhh!

I'm allowed ice chips this evening, which taste delightful, but it no sitting super well at the top if my diaphragm. Owwww!

Good luck to rest of our July firsters!

I'm sleeved! I was sleeved yesterday at 9:30am and was home at 8:00pm. I'm very sore and my nausea has been manageable. I've been drinking Clear Liquids since last night. I hope recovery goes by quickly, and I hope the rest of the July 1 sleevers are doing well :)

I'm sleeved. I was sleeved at 11 yesterday morning. I was admitted because when I tried to sip I was having stomach spasms. I'm home now and moving around pretty good. I'm sipping slowly on broth and Protein Shakes. My stomach sounds like Jurassic Park. Lol

Sorry some of you are having difficulty. i got home a few hours ago after getting sleeved yesterday. just used gasex strip for the first time and it's helping. my liquid hydrocodone just knocks me out too and helps me rest. i am having some "mind hunger" though...barely getting down my liquids.< /p>

Sitting in the hospital on day three here. The first two days I'm not going to lie, were the most difficult in my life. Pain, anxiety. Nausea... This morning I'm getting a bit better. Hope the progression continues in the right direction

just got home from hospital. had to operate twice as there was a complication. My c-section scar had adhered to my abdominal wall and with all the swelling post-op it had started to pull/tear and caused SEVERE pain , but fortunately my doc went back in fairly quickly and cut through that tissue. I was definitely in a world of pain before the second surgery, but I'm starting to feel much better today.

I have had a rough time since surgery. This is my fourth day and I am still in the hospital. I have been running a fever off and on for the last couple days. They think it is from my lungs. They are afraid of me getting pneumonia. My original iv blew and they had to put in a mid pick line. I am struggling with my drainage site. It is soooo sore. Makes it hard to cough. I am not sure if the dr will allow me to go home today or not. I am not drinking very much because of the stomach spasms. Beginning to wonder if I should have done this.

Oh, Nicky, I'm so sorry that you're in pain and suffering. :( Don't rush yourself home if there are any issues at all. Much better to stay where you can be treated and helped quickest. My stomach has been spasming since yesterday, too--I know how you feel. Just follow the doc's advice and hang in there, you'll get through this even stronger than you were before. icon_hug.gif

HELP ME! My NUTs office has been closed for 3 days and won't reopen until Monday!! Can y'all do your best in answering these questions for me?

#1 I know my lifetime water/protein goal (64/90), but what should I be aiming for during the first two weeks post-op? I feel like 64/90 is setting me up for failure. I need a more manageable goal!

#2 When do I begin taking my bariatric Vitamins, Calcium, and B12? I feel like I'm taking soooo much right now and I want my body to absorb it all!

#3 My NUT packet had conflicting information in it. Do I wait 5 minutes, 15 minutes, or 2 hours in between meds/supplements to ensure absorption?

#3 When can I begin swallowing small pills? I absolutely DETEST crushing and swallowing my meds now. Worst part of post-op!!

#4 I know the focus is Water and Protein intake, but how many calories do I need each day to prevent starvation mode and progress with weight loss?

#5 What are the symptoms of dehydration? I know I'm not getting enough right now, what do I need to be looking for?

I'll tell you what info I have from MY surgery team--keep in mind that YOUR surgeon/NUT's advice may vary.

1) I was told that protein is good to get in your early post-op days, but NOT the main focus. The main focus is LIQUIDS. Sip, sip, sip till you feel like your eyeballs are floating. Then go pee, and sip some more. ;) Protein counts will not kick in until you are on more solid foods/regular diet. So for now, think this way: Liquid is top priority; protein is a nice bonus if you can get it.

2) I am directed in no uncertain terms to hold off on vitamins until one week post-op. (Again--fluids are the priority.)

3) Once you start supplements, the 2-hour delay is to be used between your Multivitamin and your calcium --ONLY IF the multivitamin contains Iron. Otherwise the iron will mess up your calcium absorption. B12 and any other supplements can be taken at the same time as your multi, or spaced apart if you need to, but it's not mandated.

4) Don't worry about calorie counts right now. You WANT your body to go into ketosis mode so that it starts burning up fats. Once you move to mushy/soft foods, you can track calories; my NUT recommends a range of 600-800 calories to begin with in weight-loss phase. Your results may vary!

5) Symptoms of dehydration: Thirst. If your mouth feels dry or sticky, you are already becoming dehydrated. Dry/chapped lips. Urine that is along the darker end of the scale below. Headaches. Dizziness. Dry skin, or skin that doesn't "bounce back" immediately when you pinch it.

Hope this helps!

Thanks! Doctor released me yesterday. I still have to do a lot of lung work to make sure they stay clear. Glad to be home and can't wait to get the drainage tube out. It is causing a lot of pain. Hard to cough with it in which is important for my lungs. My mother has been wonderful. I don't know what I would do without her support and help.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
