There has got to be a better way

Recommended Posts

I've been in denial for a long time about my Protein intake. I don't eat meat and, at most, get 40 grams a day. I have a bunch of Protein Powder hidden in the back of the pantry, I can not stand the taste/smell. Here is the routine for when I actually bring myself to drink it: I have to hold my nose through the entire process, including when I open the tub to get a scoop out, put it in a shaker cup with 4 ounces of milk (the less I have to choke down, the better). Then I have to chug it down quickly. Then rinse my mouth out and pop in a peppermint, swish it around all surfaces of my mouth, including my lips. After another minute or 2, then, and only then, will I allow myself to breathe through my nose. But wait, I'm not done, now I need a strong stick of gum to chew for awhile because I will burp in a few minutes and it will taste like the nasty Protein Shake I just tried so hard to avoid tasting in the first place. There has got to be a better way! Let me say this: I have tried (and love) the clear Isopure Protein Drinks. The problem is I can not afford them at this point and need to use what I already own which is, unfortunately, chocolate and vanilla powders. Please let me know if you have found an easier way...

I hate those powders too! How about eggs? Yogurt? Cottage cheese?

There are tons of Protein powders out there. I think you just chose the nasty ones bcuz mine do not stink. I am not a fan of shakes though so I kno what u mean. I got my protein with eggs and cheese and Atkins shakes the first few weeks. Now I'm on fish and chicken and I still use sliced cheese to add protein. Refried Beans toi.

I actually make this way yummy shake in the morning....I take a premade container ( 11 oz ) of muscle milk, a scoop of unflavored protien powder, a banana, 1/2 cup of milk and either blueberries or cherries...The entire thing...has around 45 grams of protien. I sip on it all morning. So, I already have half my intake by lunch.

Helps me get a good start anyway. A lot of Kashi Cereal has mega protien as well, add milk and your getting 15 grams of protien with that..

Hide the Protein powder in things you do like. Sugarfree pudding. I mix a scoop with 12 oz oz of skim milk. Blend for a few seconds, then add the package of pudding. Let it set and you have 15 grams of Protein in a serving. You can't taste it.

If you are a coffee drinker, try a Mocha or latte, take the coffee, I brew a small cup, stick it in the freezer for a few minutes or just dump my leftover cold coffee in the blender with some ice, scoop of vanilla or chocolate powder, some skim milk and booyha! Instant treat.

Someone posted about about the fruit, I slice and freeze a few bananas, (they last about a week before they brown). Take a few slices, a few frozen strawberries or hand full of frozen blueberries, some skim milk and scoop of vanilla and yummy fruit smoothie.

Hope some of these ideas are helpful.

I think I'll try the pudding idea next. Thanks for your ideas! Before surgery I tried making a fruit smoothie with the powder, fruit, milk, and yogurt and I still could taste it :/

I could hardly choke the powdered shakes down, but kept trying the first couple weeks after my surgery. In fact, the thought of them still makes me sick! I switched to the ready to drink Premier Protein shakes and I love them. I'm six months out and I still have one for Breakfast every day. Just keep trying things till you find something you like.

Change your protein and try another brand. You must get your protein, you know that.

Have you tried the Chike chocolate? I LOVE that one -- can drink it made with Water and ice only. Also, try drinking them from something like a Tervis tumbler with a top on it.

I use Syntrax powder. They have a chocolate latte, chock truffle and my favorite is Cookies n cream. I mix that with unsweetened vanilla almond milk, add a little crushed ice and pop it on my bullitt. Makes a nice little dessert. My friend just told me about a banana pudding shake I might try from GNC.< /p>

I love the Syntrax Nectar shakes too. :) I still have one every morning for breakfast. Actually, I do one scoop of either the Vanilla Torte or chocolate Truffle plus one scoop of Big Train's Fit Frappe Mocha and blenderize this with 8 ounces light soy milk and four ice cubes. 39 grams of protein... and total yummy shake WITH caffeine.

Interesting. I had a really hard time when I put it in my coffee. Maybe I will try again.

Have you gone to bariatricadvantage.com? I peruse the website once in a while but haven't bought anything yet.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
