Would You Have Weight Loss Surgery Again?

  1. 1. Knowing what you know now about weight loss surgery, would you do it again if you had the chance to make your decision again?

    • Yes, without a doubt! The surgery has been everything I’d hoped for.

    • Yes, probably. The journey hasn’t been easy, but I’m losing weight and feel that this was my best option.

    • Yes, but I would have chosen a different type of weight loss surgery.

    • No. I’ve had complications and my health has suffered and/or I haven’t been hitting my weight loss goals.

    • I haven’t had the surgery yet, but I’m looking at the results of this poll carefully to help me make my decision!

This is making me so scared! I have struggled with my weight for over 20 years. I have sleep apnea, high cholesterol, high triglycerides. I have gained and lost 50lbs or more at least 10 times!

I just pray everything will be okay!

Please do not be scared. Talk it through with your surgeon. I had around 65% of my stomach removed in my VSG, I think the Czech doctors are not so extreme as the USA ones on this. I can now eat a 6 oz steak and a few fries in one go, I am 3 years out. My BMI is currently 22.8 and has been in the normal range from about 6 months after the surgery. For me it has been a lifesaver.

Good luck.

Never, This surgery did help me to lose all this weight and i'm grateful. But in return it cost me my stomach and a few scars.

I don't really care about those scars but the stomach i really care about. I'm trying to bulk and its very hard with my small stomach. I'm 10 months post up and I can't eat enough amount of Protein.

I jog 5k everyday in under 30 mins. I really didn't knew I had it in me. If i only pushed myself before doing the surgery. I would've done it alone

Its not that i'm not grateful but I could've done it naturally.

Low BMI, so you won't generally lose as quickly as someone who carries more weight. 15 lbs in a month? That's great! I'm averaging about 4 lbs a week, so about the same rate, and I'm pretty happy with that, and my current weight is 342!!!! Don't be unrealistic in your expectations! The sleeve is a tool, not a miraculous overnight cure!

True I was so disappointed because I only lost 1pound in 2weeks

Hi Toy - Did you, by chance, enter your first stall? That happens around 3-5 weeks out from surgery and can last 1 week, 3 weeks or longer. It is just your body adjusting after the initial depletion of glycogen from your muscles. It will break once your body breaks the cycle of converting fat into glycogen for the muscles. The glycogen requires a lot of supporting Water. I think I read 2 lbs of Water are required per lb of lean muscle to support processing of glycogen. Somebody correct me if my facts are wrong. This water retention gives the appearance of "stalling" while, in fact, your muscles are eating glycogen and building (read: gaining lean muscle). Once the glycogen is depleted again so goes the water and your stall breaks. And the cycle repeats and repeats and repeats. That is why weight loss looks a little like a staircase. Lose some, stall, lose some, stall, lose some, stall, lose some....

Also, how tall are you and what is your goal weight?

I have read so many posts of people that are unhappy with the results. It really saddens me to hear how so many of us are struggling unhappily.

As for me this surgery, in addition to the weight loss benefit has been a tremendous learning experience as well. I am more in touch with the rest of my body, other than my stomach than I have been in years.

I miss doing a lot of things the way I used to do them. But I've learned to do them in a new way.

I can still leisurely dine. If I am engaged in conversation during a meal, no one is paying attention to how much I eat, I eat far slower, and enjoy it more, and eat enormously less...(I can only hold about 2 ounces of food). And, a bite is as good as the bar, the piece, the slice, the cup, etc. It's the first bite that satisfies most, the rest is just filler.

I have a range of movement unlike I've had in years, the back pain, foot pain, arthritis pain is extremely small now.

I've lost a bit of hair, and heck if I lose it all, I'll just go get an Eva Gabor wig until it all comes back.

As for sex, I was too fat to enjoy it before, and the libido, and enjoyment will all get to where I've no known it in years.

I've learned that a lot of people with weight problems have more excuses for doing what they should do to lose this weight than the shore has sand...I used to be one of them. Amazing now what I am accomplishing since I gave the heave ho to the excuses and took charge with the surgery and following through.

It's tough, and I'll be the first to admit the exercise part is hard, since it's still painful on the back and feet, but it's getting better.

Everyone hang in there, we were sick and unhappy as unhealthy, overweight people. So, we made a change, and we need to remember that the surgery is only a tool to aid in our weight loss success, not the magic wand we all want it to be.

Despite the challenges of the surgery, they are far less than trying to lose this weight without it. If I had to do it again, I would in a heartbeat.

I would do mine all over again if I had too. I am now 9 weeks post op and down 45 pounds. My start weight was 331 lbs so I am very happy. I have heard a lot about stalls on this journey and I think I have just come to my 1st stall. I have weight the same for the past week and I am hearing this can last for 3 weeks. I am not too worried since I am doing everything that I have been told to do but since I still have so much weight to lose this can be a little discouraging. I have people in my life that keep asking me how much you lose this week and frankly I am getting so tired of being asked. It mentally hard on me being asked all the time. I am not sure why people have a need to do this. Maybe they are sincere but sometimes I think they would love for me to fail. It is a litte depressing.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
