Am I the only one?

Recommended Posts

Am I the only one that is scared they will be the one person the sleeve doesnt work on? I have failed so many diets that Im scared of failing this too. It seems that noone in my life can understand that. They are like here try this or you can have a taste! Im not sure what I can do to make them inderstand that it is different now. If we live in the same house and have seen this transition there is no excuse in not understanding. Sorry for venting. Im just scared of failure. Now my significant other thinks im taking it too far when I dont want to get over 20 carbs a day.

I felt the same way pre surgery. I think the feeling comes from is seeing all those get rich/make money/weight loss infomercials on late night tv. They tell you that you too can learn their secret for 3 easy payments of $19.99. I know it sounds too good to be true, but I get the product anyway hoping this one is gonna work for me, only to find out that it's not the easy/quick answer that is touted on the show.

So yea, I was scared of being a failure at WLS as well. But so far (1 month), I feel like it has changed my life for the better. I don't have those constant thoughts about, "What am I going to eat next?" And for me, that was the biggest battle.

And as far as people around you giving advice, just refer them to your doctor's instructions or find some way to irritate the crap out of them - so they leave you alone. I recommend a spray bottle filled with Water. Each time they start in on you, spritz them 3 or 4 times.

I feel the same way, so many failed diets, I'd lose then when I went off the diet for one reason or another, I'd gain it back but I'm keeping a positive attitude that this will work. Besides having to pay for this surgery myself, I better make sure it does lol. I know the bottom line is we need to change how we eat. I've read so many posts from here and each one has lost weight so.. we just need to make sure we keep losing and keep it off. My surgery is on Wed Jan 30th, I'm nervous, scared, but very positive that my life is about to change in a very good way. Good Luck :)

I think everyone has doubts at some point on their journey. Good thing is that if you stick to your plan - then it's 99% guaranteed that you will lose A LOT of weight!!

Relax and enjoy the journey and know that it will happen for you - and a taste every now and then won't hurt or going over 20g carbs one day. I personally don't restrict my carbs too much as I need them for the types exercise I do.

You are totally not the only one. :) I don't limit my carbs but I do shoot for at least 80 grams of Protein and about 900 calories.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I value every one of them. I feel like I shouldnt gain weight at all with how careful I am. I know I dont get in enough calories and im working on that. I also need to work out but cant afford to go to the gym. I am a nurse so im constantly going all day and when I get home I feel like I dont have enough energy to work out

I think we all think the same thing as soon as we hit a stall... my first stall... I actually gained 2 lbs! I thought... OMG! Not even surgery will work for me! but after 6 days, I saw a change on the scale... and in my clothes... just know that it gets better...

Omg I am and was TERRIFIED! I want to eat bad foods right now! Instead I will sip Water and occupy my mind with something else. I wonder if I can keep this up forever or one day will I be able to eat a Krispy Kreme donut and decide to eat 6 of them instead?

I think because we have all FAILED at diets, i realize that i still have to do the work, this was no easy fix, just an extra tool to help....my fingers are crossed and prayers are being said!

I have a Krispy Kreme donut every now and then. I dont deprive myself. That is not why I had this surgery. I started this journey at a size 24 and now I am a size 8 and counting down. I always eat Protein first and treat myself usually one day a week. So far so good. Good luck to you.

So glad I came across this post! I keep having dreams my stomach is stretched out and that I wont lose anymore weight. i am 6 wks out and quickly get reminded as soon as i eat that my stomach is not stretched. I have only lost 34lbs. But will be happier when i can see the surgery worked and not be fearing failure . So glad i am not the only one!

I was the same way in the beginning. So worried about stretching my stomach. I can eat more now than when I first had the surgery, but my doctor said this would happen. I cannot eat ALOT of food but definitely more than when I first had the surgery. That is why I eat Protein first. I am almost a year and a half out and I am still losing. Just lost 4 pounds this week. You will be fine. Good luck to you.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
