So I was told that my sweet 9 year old baby who has been sleeping with me since he was 2 months old couldn't sleep with me for three weeks post-op. It's okay if he doesn't see me go to bed and someone else allows him in their bed, but its also hard for me to not sleep with him. He's a sweet comfort and a natural foot warmer. Do you think the risk for infection is that bad

That funny I haven't heard that one! My dog who is not allowed in my bed, saw me as fair game because I was down for the count for a couple of days. She took full advantage a snuck into my bed everyday!! Now she thinks she can just get in anytime she wants

Lol. I think they help us heal. He goes on all my walks with me. Even when I don't have anyone to walk with, I can always count on him.

My dog sleeps in our bed every night, post-op was no different. He sleeps down by my feet and I never had any problems.

I think my dog was just looking for a warm spot!!

I told my husband I'm about to just give in and buy her some stairs to get in easier ( she's a chihuahua) 0_o

I guess I get your doctors point.. Like I said I hadn't thought about it that way but my dog didn't lay on my tummy she burrows down by my legs.

Both my dogs did.as long as thier clean and desease free itl be ok.which you know your own dog is clear.

Yeah - he was groomed the weekend before my surgery and he sleeps on top of the covers at my feet. So I don't see how it would be an issue either. Lets hope I don't jinx ot and get an infection lol

I stayed with my mom after surgery, both of her dogs slept with me, I had no problems.

I would think that as long as they are clean and stay by your feet it wouldn't be a problem. I'd be scared to let them up near my stomach though. It would probably be painful if they accidentally kicked or scratched you on or near an incision spot.

I agree- I would be more worried about them accidentally kicking me in the tummy than anything else.

You were told it was because he could give you an infection?? As a 25 yr. veterinarian assistant I call BS...unless you let him lick your incisions!! I would think the greatest danger would be him jumping on your abdomen. If he stays at your feet..I don't see any harm in allowing him to stay there

When I was home from surgery I slept with two dogs and three cats. They loved my forced bedrest and even with all that exposure...I was not infected LOL Your washcloth probably is dirtier than your dog on a regular basis.

The only thing I could see is if your dog is very large and tends to lay on you...that might be an issue, but otherwise, your nut is kind of ummm nutty LOL

I think the reason for this is because the doctors want to make sure your dog isn't jumping around in an attempt to play with you accidentally opening one or more of your surgical incisions. Primarily the incision where the part of your stomach is removed from. This incision will be very painful and I personally slept with a pillow in front of me to avoid anyone accidentally poking me during sleep time. I also found it more comfortable to have a small pillow to apply pressure to that part of my body while I was up and moving around after surgery during the day. Three weeks is a little long; however, better safe than sorry. Oh yea, my Punkin slept with me EVERYTIME I hit the bed and never left my side except to do her business. My biggest issue was keeping our dogs from jumping into my lap while we were watching television. I ended up having a full size pillow with me to keep across my tummy whenever we were watching TV to avoid any accidents. You'll survive and little one will sleep well nightly too! (Probably better than you will at first...)

Two yorkies sleep in my bed nightly. I had a large incision down my abdomen and six small. I am 6 weeks post op now and the dogs have slept with me every night I have been home. The litte on(3lb) even ran across my stomach a time or two. She is little but thinks she is in charge!

Thanks for the great feedback everyone. I went for a car ride with him yesterday and he jumped up on me getting a side incision. Fortunately I was okay - just stung a bit. He only jumps on me when I'm sitting, never when we're in bed. I've guarded my lap with a bariatric stuffed moose i was given in the hospital. He has been trained well to sleep at my feet. Whenever my bf sleeps over and anything goes on he goes to his bed on the floor. He's well trained.

I have a chihuahua too and funny she goes under the blankets and down to my feet too! Also have a Puggle and an American Bulldog!
