When Will The Exhaustion And Queezy Feeling End

Recommended Posts

Hi All: so I am a full three weeks post op today and feel totally exhausted. when does that end? I struggle to get through a day and when it comes to eating I am done after a few bites. I became dehydrated and needed an IV over the weekend. I just want to feel sorta normal again. When will that happen? Any takers to these questions. Thanks so much for your responses....

Hi Dinnah,

I hope you are feeling better soon. I had a lapband put in two years ago and I really struggled with exhaustion for a while. It took me a while to realise there was some depression mixed in there too! I know how hard it can be when something disrupts your relationship with food, it was like loosing my best friend. Have you tried any cardio exercises? I know that always helps pick me up.

Best of luck to you!

I felt the same way for my first 4 weeks. I was still leaning on the shower wall at 3 weeks out - then at the 4 week mark I realized that I felt pretty good and was getting my mojo back. I guess it takes a while for our bodies to adjust to the change in energy source. Hang in there - it gets a lot better soon.

It takes a while under the best of circumstances and if you aren't getting in all of your Protein and Water that makes it harder. I think it is a very gradual process, you feel a little bit better each week. I am 10 weeks out and don't think I am there yet, but I know I feel a lot better than I did a month ago. Good luck.

wow I'm glad I'm not the only one that is wiped out by showering and drying my hair. I went back to work at the end of week two and regretted it every since. So I am taking a few more days off this week to try to get my "act together". I am making a real effort to drink at least 48oz of Water. The thing is whenever I try to eat anyting I feel queasy. Anyone else feel that way, does it every end. BTW I have absolutely NO DESIRE TO eat - it really is gone. HOpefully my scale will start to show results. Thisi s most definitely hard - now isn't it?

I was pretty wiped out at three weeks. Your still healing and still dealing with the swelling from surgery. That makes getting the liquids in difficult. (Disclaimer.....I have no medical degree , just my humble vsg experience!). My nausea wasn't too bad, but. My dr gave me a prescription for a patch behind my ear and also a suppository. I never opened the suppository and only used three Patches. But nausea is common. It will get better.

Just focus on sipping your liquids. I know it's tough and the last thing you want to do. I was sleeved 10/22/12 and I can usually take a whole swallow or two at a time now.

The hardest part of healing is behind you now , at least it was for me at three weeks. I do have pain on my right side sometimes. Before long you won't believe how good you feel. As for feeling " normal", you're gonna have a whole new normal! Hang in there, and get ready to feel great!........mendy

it was a good 2 months for me, felt like crap then gradually didn't.

Start light exercise (with the docs approval) and drink plenty of Water. You are in ketosis and burning off fat reserves, this takes a while to get used to and really upsets some peoples well being.

It will pass.

I am 3 1/2 weeks post op & still feel nauseous pretty much everyday. I am trying to find a food that feels ok. Im so depressed thinking Ive done something to mess this up already. But with the small amount of food Ive been able to eat, surely I haven't messed it up. Im trying to exercise but my stomach is still so weak & sore too. I've lost 20-22 lbs...in the first 2 weeks but I think that was the fact that the first 2 days all i did was drink Water & sleep and because Ive had no soda or Starbucks.

My throat feels like it is closing up when I eat....and Im doing my tiny bites. But i can feel everything going down. And then my stomach will hurt. Im very frustrated.

Thanks for you responses. When I attempt to eat "approved foods" they get stuck. My throat feels closed also. I also became dehydrated last week and felt like ****. Now I am focusing on Water water water and not Protein or food at this point in time. And I feel better. I know that protein is king, but right now it is taking a back seat for a few more days for me. I have only lost 10lbs in 3 weeks! wtf is up with that? It pisses me off. (sorry for the language, I don't mean to offend anyone - but I'm not happy about it). Exercising is not happening for me at this point in time, as taking a shower is an effort. All in all, I do feel much better than the first night I was sleeved and felt like I wanted to die LOL. So that is improvement - right? :D

First off you are correct, water > protein. But protein is still very important in the medium term, because your body will attempt to consume protein before fat, and if you don't have an external protein source, the next best available one is your muscle tissue - including your heart. For the first few weeks worry more about water, but eventually protein does count.

If you are still on Clear liquids, take a look at Isopure. It seems to drive some people up the wall because it's got a strong artificial sweetener flavor to it, but if you don't mind that taste (diet drinks, etc), the clear Isopure is an absolute salvation. I generally kept an 8 oz glass of water and an 8 oz glass of Isopure by my bed for the first 2 weeks and alternately sipped out of both.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
