ssriley got a reaction from cccv4 in What Will Happen If I Don't Follow The 2 Week Preopp Diet?I asked my surgeon at my first appointment if I would have to be on a pre-op diet to shrink my liver, and he said in thousands of surgeries he's only had one patient whose liver was large enough to be an issue for surgery. He had me lay on the table and palpated me - then said "You're fine. You've struggled enough, let's give you the tool (my VSG) you need to get you're weight off. Just don't go nuts till then".
I vote my Dr. for President. He knows most of his patients are professional dieters, and I alone have lost enough weight in my life to equal a small SUV. But without this wonderful tool we've been gifted with, we just couldn't hold our ground. A mechanic can't fix an engine without a wrench, and statistically without surgery the odds of losing most of your body weight and keeping it off for 5 years is ZERO.
I really appreciate the compassion my Dr. shows his patients. We should all have at least as much if not more, for our fellow warriors.

ssriley got a reaction from Gigi1913 in Any Change Post Op On Edema In Calves?I'm 10-days post-op, and the reduction in swelling of my calves and ankles post surgery was the most dramatic change I experienced post surgery. My work boots are literally flopping around my ankles now. My first 2 days home from the hospital I was urinating 5-6 times a day initially and even my ring size dropped till I'm concerned about losing my wedding ring already. There really are visible veins in my ankles now. Wow.

ssriley got a reaction from Need-a-Sleeve in Stabbing/burning PainI had the same thing last for about a week when I was a month post-op. Hot knife when I would bend over to tie my shoes or get up from a couch, etc. Doc said the nerves were healing and was totally normal. All good since then.

ssriley got a reaction from Angelmom in Cheese StickMini BabyBel Lights by Laughing Cow. They're in a mesh bag and are individually wrapped in wax. They are soft, only 50-cals but 8 gm of protein. They are easier on me than the string cheese and taste better too.

ssriley reacted to TexasT in Vet Sleevers Question....about Feeling FullI'm 2.5 yrs post-op and when I'm full I have the normal full feeling like the old days. No pain. But if I really push it I will get a bit of pain - when that happens I get up and walk around until things "settle" a bit. The first year for sure I had pain when I pushed my pouch to the limit, but not anymore. Best of luck to you!

ssriley reacted to DanaInNewOrleans in Company In The Hospital?I cannot imagine going into surgery without someone there- especially my husband. The only time I had surgery before this was when I had my thyroid removed. All my friends surprised me and came to the hospital that morning to be with me and I had about 10 friends waiting for me when I got back. It pissed the nurses off! But it was a comfort to me to have my friends ( a couple spent the night) because I was sick as a dog from nausea.

ssriley reacted to iggychic in Company In The Hospital? He should be there before during and after surgery. Honestly you have to rethink your child care if he can't be away thet long. When you are not lucid they are your lifeline. You would be a fool to go into surgery without one! Anyone, but SOMEONE.

ssriley reacted to Need-a-Sleeve in Company In The Hospital?I worked in surgery for 18 years & it was always preferable to have the spouse or family member at the hospital until the person was taken to their room. The reason is if (hopefully not) there are complications, someone that can speak for you is available. As you can imagine, my mind played back all the complications we had encountered & as I am a widow knew I could not have my spouse there.
I had a friend that is a nurse there & she saw me through to my room, made sure I could work the PCA & left.
Could your sister stay with the kids until your husband sees you in your room & then trade places? Best of luck & this is NOT being selfish at all.

ssriley got a reaction from Drewc577 in Cocktails After Vsg?I have had occasional drinks since about six weeks out. I have even used a small amount of diet cola for a mixer with no issues as the fizz is gone pretty fast. No issues except a little burping - but nothing as glorious as I did before surgery anyway. Contrary to what I've heard, alcohol doesn't affect me any differently than it did pre-surgery. And it really goes good with my cigars. Yes ...I said it. Life is good.
