I Can Suddenly Eat More

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved on July 2nd, and I have had trouble drinking my entire morning shake everyday. I get it in, but it takes at least an hour, and I always feel really full. This morning I was able to drink it easily, and still felt hungry, so I had a few bites of refried Beans that I had left....and I am still a bit hungry.

I am not going to eat anymore until lunch, because it isn't a huge hunger feeling, but I can tell that I could have a couple more bites if I wanted to. Does this mean my stomach is pretty much healed? Does it really happen all of the sudden like that? I knew I would eventually be able to eat a bit more, which is great, I am tired of not being able to eat my Protein. If this is actually a regular thing, I will be able to stop drinking the shakes and that would make me very happy.

Could this be a fluke? What you pros think?

I would guess your swelling is going down. My doc says you are not completely healed until 6-8 weeks out. Sounds like you are doing well!

I finally have been able to up my calories and my food. I was only able to get in 1/4 cup of anything at a meal, except my shake.

I think doing the shake is still a good thing for once a day, because you are getting in Vitamins plus your nutrition and Protein.

Instead of eating though, give it time and drink more Water instead of eating. Wait for a snack and get some more Protein in. I usually know when I am full because I burp or I feel a weird pain in my tummy.

I never really "feel full" when I drink my shake because it literally takes me over an hour to 1-1/2 hours to drink it.

I have noticed that I am able to get more in and instead of eating much bigger meals, I'll spread them out a little more.

I learned that having a warm beverage an hour or so before dinner is beneficial for me. At night I have been having a teaspoon of Peanut Butter on a low carb cracker like Breton.

I agree, the swelling has reduced. Keep in mind, liquid really won't make you feel full now. But if you give it a few minutes after drinking a protien shake the protien should satiate your hunger.

I was also sleeved 2 July and yesterday discovered that I'm eating a little more at times - from a quarter of a cup to a half a cup. First thing in the morning I can barely eat a thing and later sleevie "relaxes" especially if my food is warm or as the previous poster notes, I have had a hot drink. I agree and I think the swelling has gone right down.

I would say yes this is the healing process. I would suggest gradually increasing your food amounts. I notice with my sleeve I occasionally evaluating what I eat as well as how much and how often. Good luck. Thisay be a good time to incorporate some Protein rich Snacks.< /p>

I find it still comes and goes a bit, but yes, it did seem to happen quickly when it did finally happen.

bu tthe leftover hungry feeling may be a bit of acid, and the only way you can tell, for sure, is take an antacid - I can tell mild hunger from acid just by taking a tums sugar free. Just no reason to tempt the old head if you don't have to.

PS - you will be tempted to "push" your sleeve t osee when you are full - don't. i suggest stick to about 1/4 of protien at a time, mind the liquids rule, and if in about a week you are good, try about a tablespoon more...you aren't aiming to stretch, just get in as much protien as you can.

Good luck and yay on not being so dependent on the shakes!

Mine healed quickly in jumps like that. I freaked out a little because I hear of so many that have trouble eating a couple teaspoons, etc.... not me. I moved right along. I was actually hoping for some prolonged swelling ;)

Your doctor allows you to eat pork chops and hamburgers at only 4 weeks out? I can't even start puréed food until 4 weeks out! I can't have beef or pork until about six MONTHS out. Wow! I knew there were discrepancies between different individual plans, but good lord! Is anyone else able to eat beef after only four weeks?

keep in mind...the pork chops are boneless, thin and baked in the oven in a soup.. the grilled hamburger is about the size of a 1/2 dollar.... I have a sleeve of steel I guess... I can not however eat grilled chicken any more... it comes right back up now.... I've always been an extremely picky eater and my doc said since I do not eat cheese, grits, oatmeal, and a whole long list of other foods that people eat... for me to try things I like in small amount... the puree stage was hell for me... all I ate was mashed pototoes and pudding....

Yes, I was also cleared for all foods at 4 weeks. I tried ground beef when I was cleared for it at 3 weeks and it didn't work out well, but by a few weeks later it was no problem. I'm able to eat chicken breast and grilled steak with no problem. I was sleeved May 10.

I was able to get down two tiny (I mean very tiny pieces (pinky nail size) of pork chop and about 1 ounce of grilled steak and I'll be 8 weeks on Monday. I guess I am a slow healer. I was surprised I was able to get the steak down but I seriously hurt my jaw chewing each little bite until it was completely rendered...a goner.

I'm 7 weeks out, I got my sleeve june 6th 2012. I can eat a bit more, and am starting to be hungry while for the first 6 weeks i couldn't eat, or couldn't stand the smell of food. How hard is it to stretch out your new pouch? I've read some blogs that say it's very hard for it to stretch, and some say it can, and some say it's very easy.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
