If our intestines do all of the absorbing, why do we dehydrate so quickly after having most of our stomach removed and no intestinal bypass performed? I have had to be infused with fluids 4 times since surgery because I dehydrated. I think I have a handle on it now, but I wonder why we are so prone to dehydration? Has anybody asked a medical professional why this is so? Before surgery I never drank as much fluids as I do now and I never had a problem.

I don't know but I'm dehydrated b/c I'm having a hard time getting all of my fluids in. We also get fluids from the foods we eat. The drier the food, the less moisture we absorb from it, maybe? We also aren't eating very much so that may account for it as well. I don't know. Just theorizing here.

It is not that the surgery itself makes us dehydrated. It is the amount of Water we take in that changes. Even if you think your water intake is the same think about all the water we used to get from foods. Now that we can only drink and eat so much we drastically cut that intake.

Furthermore, Protein based diets usually drain us of our fluids and cause constipation. So a mix of lack of fluids from diet (food too) and an increase in Fluid zapping foods can easily cause dehydration.

Getting dehydrated correlates to not getting in enough Water. Being dehydrated is preventable if you aren't throwing up having constant diarreah or nausea, if you have the other issues, then there's something more wrong and you need to seek medical attention.

Start keeping track of how much you are getting in. Practice sipping all day long. We are all told before surgery that we need to sip, sip, sip, it doesn't change after surgery. Sipping water all day and keeping track of how much we get in is extremely important to good health.

I specifically asked about this. My nutritionist said that when we had quart/half-gallon sized stomachs, we could hold a lot more fluid at once. Now, we have to sip sip sip and some people forget or can't as often as they need to. And also as mesaucedo mentioned, many foods are mostly water and we used to be able to eat a lot of them. Now, not so much, so the decrease in the amount we could chug plus the amount in food totaled quite a lot before surgery.

I think it's because it was a lot easier to drink 64 oz. of water pre-op than post-op. It was easy to just down a glass of water and now all we can do is take baby sips and keep doing that all day.

OMG, seriously! The number of times I've felt thirsty, taken a big slurp of liquid to quench my thirst, realized how much that HUGE swallow was going to hurt going down, then spit the whole mouthful back into the cup..... it's like re-learning how to breathe.

I know, for me anyway....i drank fluids WITH all my meals before surgery...now because we are not suppose to drink while eating, my fluid intake is greatly reduced .... So having to sip liquids all day, has not come easy. (yet)

I was sleeved December 17th, one week ago today. I am having the HARDEST time getting in my 64 oz of Fluid. Right now I'm getting about half of that, 32 oz. My mom is very worried I'm going to get dehydrated. I've been keeping up with the color of my urine (anywhere from dark yellow to almost clear. My mouth is dry not like it use to be. I have diarrhea (but not every day) and I'm gassy. Any advice?

That actually sounds very normal at this stage of the game, and you should be ok. Just keep on sipping, and it does get better!

You seem to be doing the right things, just keep tracking your water. Vitamin Water Zero goes down so much easier than regular water. So does SoBe Life Water. I mix syntrax nectar Lemmon tea with one packet of Crystal light and 3-4 Cups of water
