Hey all!!

I have my psych eval next week. What should I expect?

I only joined yesterday, but I have become absolutely obsessed with this site. So many inspiring stories.

My psych evaluation was done in 2 parts. Don't worry about it. They just want to make sure you are ready for the surgery and to let you know about maybe being depressed afterwards.

Mine wasn't too bad - lasted about 1.5 hours. Lots of questions about my past (eating disorders and behaviors, any history of self harm, abuse, etc.) They need to make sure that you are emotionally stable enough to handle the outcome.

And, they want to make sure that you have a support system -- this is so very important!!

I was curious about this as well! Mine is this Friday!! It's the last thing I have to do then the submission to UHC to see the outcome... Crossing my fingers!!

Completely depends on the PsyD and program.

Most likely, a little "chat" followed by a standardized test (or multiple tests), and a follow-up visit to discuss results. At least 1 follow-up. My PsyD likes to see people pre-op twice (test, results), 1 month after (see how things are going), and then every 6 months just for mental maintenance.

Please read my blog on this. It was too funny for me. For others, it was serious, because some people have to figure out why they overeat or if they will be able to deal with not losing over 100 pounds. I know why I over eat and I refuse not to lose 100 pounds!

Every psych eval is different.I didnt have any questionnaires to fill out. I simply chatted with her. She made me feel so relaxed. We talked about past family history, medical hx,future goals, alot of subjects. It was about an hour and I was done.I didnt have a followup appt either because she felt like I didnt have any red flags that would mentally prevent me from getting the surgery. Just relax and tell the truth about everything and things will be alright. :)

It is different for everyone. A friend of mine had to go back three times to deal with issues, where I talked about my life and took a 500 question test. So different.

I guess it depends who your with. I have Kaiser, mine lasted approximatly 20 min. I was asked a lot of questions. Do/did ismoke, did I have any depression, do I drink alcohol. I heard some a bit more extensive though. They just want to know that we are mentally stable and able to handle the changes.

I have my eval next week & it's also in 2 parts. I was told the questionnaire takes about 1.5 hours and the regular chat about an hour. Not sure why I'm nervous, I always do well on these kinds of things but I am...

Good luck to everyone taking it!

Hi ShoeVixen,

Hi I had the same setup. Don't be nervous. Be honest and be ready to talk about everything in your life. I read a while back one guy was rejected because he did LSD back in the day. One girl I know had to go for multiple visits, because she would have fallen into deep depression if she did not lose weight. Otherwise, it is just to make sure you don't have issues that need to be addressed before surgery. Also, insurance companies spend around $20,000 plus hospital stay and follow up visits money for us to be successful and save them money later on. They want you to have the right mindset. There are people who will start eating Big Macs and fries two weeks after or gain all their weight back after a year, so they want to make sure your mindset is right.

I am self pay (i have horrible ins that wont cover wls) but my doctor requires it. I was literally in shock when they told me the evaluation was$450. That just seemed to be ridiculous but whatever. I hafta have it for my sleeve.

I would guess that means they want to have you do some written tests. They take about an hour or so to complete, then the psychologist goes over it with you. My daughter did this a few years ago to get a diagnosis of OCD and it cost me about $300 with insurance!

Good luck! I have my psych eval on the 14th so hopefully that will be one of the last steps to getting ready to be sleeved.

I took my mental health eval last week. I don't know why I stressed over it so badly, it was simple! Talked to the psych dr for maybe 15 minutes then did the q&a on paper. She just asked a little about my past health, my family life growing up and my life in general. She also made sure I had done my research on wls. A couple times during my interview she commented this will go quick or oh you're going to do great. I thought it was a little odd and unprofessional but whatever. The personality test thing I did was the MMPI. I found a link here that has the first 75 questions, it's the exact one I did. Good luck! https://antipolygraph.org/cgi-bin/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1109032158

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
