Welcome avasa! I added your date to the board.

Bettina, HELP!!!! My nutritionist told us to make sure we use whey isolate. Do you think that it really is a problem? I started down the carnation instant Breakfast route after another thread convinced me it would be enough Protein. When I loaded the info into fit day I freaked out over how many carbs I drank. I need to go shopping tomorrow for a new alternative, but feel lost and don't know what to get. I've been searching for beneprotein, because I've heard it truly is tasteless but I can't find it anywhere.:help:

Hi,

It's not a problem per se, i chose soy by personal choice for my needs (losing weight). Did they say whey and no soy? I am sure there was a reason they say to use whey. Soy as a rule tastes better. As long as you are taking your Vitamins too, i can't see that whey is better than soy. But if they are insistant on whey, don't jeopardize the possibility of being banded. I am gonna go check something...brb

Okay I think they are suggesting whey because it is muscle building. Whey is better for muscle building than soy. Soy has always been considered a "feminine" protein because of this. And my guess is that because the diet is changing drastically....it has to being on liquids....they don't want you to get muscle atrophy (losing natural muscle). You know you've seen it, like Calista Flockhart--her arms, she is so skinny that she has very little muscle mass anymore, when you diet, your body looks for any source of energy it can find, when everything is depleated, it goes to muscle. This is a nautrally occuring process when we age however. Soy lower testosterone and helps promote estrogen. I know several people who had to have early hysterectomies and rather than go on estrogen, they just did the soy thing and their levels are fine.

I think that anyone doing the Protein Shake thing should be walking everyday. (not a marathon or anything, just something to burn off the fat and carbs that comes with it).

I will be doing the shakes as little as possible on the days I can't walk.

ha ha look what i just found: This should be helpful. Just make sure you read labels and do what you think works for you! http://www.vitalady.com/faqs.htm

Hi all,

I'm scheduled for Sept. 13 with Dr. Oriz, TJ Mexico. I'm a bundle of nerves, nervous energy!:clap2: :help: :)

Did everyone know that Sept. is the first banded patient's 13th

anniversary? So, I'm counting it a good omen having surgery on the 13th.

:)

Hey Jewel,

I too get banded on the 13th. Your email got me thinking...I was born on a 13th, now I will be "reborn"again, but to become a skinnier me! Hahaha. Are you in Mexico?

To all of us who are interested in the Protein Shakes for post-op. Somewhere in this site, I read that one of the "inconveniences" after surgery is gas. Also, that soy Protein actually increases this "gassy" situation. It was reccommended to consume whey protein instead of soy to avoid this problem.

I'm being banded on Sept 29 in Toronto. Can't believe it is happening! I start my 2 week Optifast diet on the 15 - not looking forward to that at all. Considering it makes the surgery safer....I'm sure it will be worth it. Good luck to all of you going before me.

Ciao,

Kirsten

I haven't heard any of you mention "Peak Nutrition" Bioengineered Ion-exchange Whey Protein. I buy it from my doc. I asked the nutritionist about the soy protein mixes, etc., and she said there are some out there that are good, but this one is the best because it has lots more protein and is generally lower in the bad stuff.

I am telling you, the chocolate is very good. I mixed the vanilla with a little sf/ff banana instant pudding (one of the nutritionist's ideas) and it's really good too. I mix both of them with half ice/half Water.< /p>

Taste is something that happens to be important to me sustaining any diet. I hadn't lost much at all but stepped on the scale this afternoon and it looks like I may have lost around 4.5 lbs now.

I can't believe I'm scheduled for next Monday! 7 days until my life changes drastically. Have any of you Sept. bandsters had days where you lose your resolve? I've bounced around more than a basketball at a Knicks game.

Hi All,

I start all liquid tomorrow. My nutritionist told me to use Whey Protein. I finally found natural (unflavored) whey protein. Had it yesterday in beef broth. Didn't change the flavor thank goodness. I'm loaded with Atkins Advantage and Slimfast, choc/van/natural whey, sf Jello, sf pudding (for after surgery) and tons of broth and some boxes of cream, low cal/low crab Soups.< /p>

I go tomorrow for pre-op visit and first weigh in since 7/6 with doc. I think I'm down 11 but not sure.... Any questions I should ask tomorrow. Also going to Walmart to buy supplies for post op, there was a good site somewhere here about what you need.

Good luck to all that have it tomorrow!

Peak Nutrition is not sold on the market, its private. I am assuming they tell you its best because they sell it, my nutritionist sells her own stuff too. Too pricey for me, there is just as good products on the market.

Ok, kiddies... I survived. Consider me a bandster.

All went well, including the pre-surgery labs. Before you know it, you're climbing up on the table and going ni ni... My surgery took a whopping 11 minutes. Probably two minutes longer than it should since I had a small hiatal hernia. Awoke in my patient room, and from then 'til now I've consumed an Otter Pop, a Capri Sun juice, and some sips of Water.< /p>

Unfortunately, it didn't go as well for another person. After 1.5 hours, they decided to abort the surgery. Due to previous surgeries, my understanding is the organs where not all positioned they would expect them to be, and there were serious risks long term if they were to do it. Bummer.

I plan on writing a detailed outline of my adventure though Bandsterland. Maybe it's not an E ticket... but still worthy of blowing your hair back.

More to come!

At my first nutritionist meeting, she said that any good whey Protein mix would be fine. I called another nutritionist at the same office and she's the one that said I should stick with the one the doc's office sells. Maybe she gets a commission. LOL :heh:

I sure don't want less testosterone!!!! :notagree Plus, with my family history of breast cancer, I don't mess with Soy products. But to each his/her own!

I'm pretty sure if we're able to figure out what works best for us individually, we're ahead of the game. The important thing is to make INFORMED decisions. That's why gathering info here is cool.:welldoneclap:

My doctor doesn't require a lengthy diet prior to banding, just 2 days of Clear Liquids but he and the psychologist wanted me to do 80% Protein and 20% good carbs for 2 weeks so that is where I am now and have lost 6 lbs. Woohoooo! But...having a lot of trouble finding a tolerable Protein Drink. Slim Fast Hi Protein and Advant Edge both taste nasty to me. I have some Unjury no taste and I guess I could blend it with FF milk and fruit and try that. Or maybe mix it in chicken broth. Confusion. Help. Katt

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
