Recommended Posts

I can't believe it in about 10 hours I will be on the banded side. I'm am really excited. :clap2: I have only one problem I am starving! :hungry: The only pre-op diet my dr. put me on was for today of Clear Liquids. NOT Fun. Had a headache all day. I am now going to sleep :notagree as I have taken my frinedly Ambien. So please disregard any typos or mispellings because I am basically typing this totally in a blurr.

I do want to thank all of you for your support and knowledge through my journey. You have helped me get to where I am today.

Want2lose, thanks for the acknowledgment and good wishes.

Please think of me and if you are someone who prays, I'm open to prayer at any time.

I will keep you posted at some time on Wednesday when I get home from the hosp.

hugs to all,

September 18th is my day. Today I started the pre-op diet of liquids only. Very fun! I still do not know if I have insurance approval. I have been calling Aetna daily. They think I should have an answer this week. I have pre-op testing on Thursday. Keep your fingers crossed that the approval comes. Can't wait to start my new banded life.

It'sgottago,

is the liquid diet your on full of calories? Are you exercising? Some of us just tend to hang on to then unwanted fat. I do the same thing. Your body may think it's starving and will hold on to every thing it can thinking it's the only way to survive. Write down everything you eat (sorry drink)daily and make sure you call your doctor. They may have a suggestion that can help.

I"m sure you will be fine and after surgery. Don't be discourged there is a "mini me" inside of all of us fighting to get out!

YOU CAN DO IT!!!!

James - I love your ticker. Just had to get that out there.

I am so excited for you and really hope you'll tell us more soon. In fact, I hope we'll hear more from many September bandsters as more of us reach our dates.

I told my daughter over the weekend - it went well. Better than the dieting! I should have known better than to go to the fair! Back to the regimen today, though.

Ok, kiddies... I survived. Consider me a bandster.

All went well, including the pre-surgery labs. Before you know it, you're climbing up on the table and going ni ni... My surgery took a whopping 11 minutes. Probably two minutes longer than it should since I had a small hiatal hernia. Awoke in my patient room, and from then 'til now I've consumed an Otter Pop, a Capri Sun juice, and some sips of Water.< /p>

Unfortunately, it didn't go as well for another person. After 1.5 hours, they decided to abort the surgery. Due to previous surgeries, my understanding is the organs where not all positioned they would expect them to be, and there were serious risks long term if they were to do it. Bummer.

I plan on writing a detailed outline of my adventure though Bandsterland. Maybe it's not an E ticket... but still worthy of blowing your hair back.

More to come!

11 minutes? Wow!

Sounds like you had a great experience, and I look forward to hearing more about it!

I am with you! I am the 22nd and we have been celebrating the 12 days of Fatness at my house. I am getting in all my "last's" before my liquid diet (which is the part of this I am most afraid of) I didn't get fat because of my determination and will power...

So we are all counting the days now....

Diane - 12 Days of Fatness! LOL That's great. I celebrated more than 12 days prior. :P

Your DH will be a bandster too? That's fantastic! I would love to have this in common with my DH. He's been getting colder feet than I have. I'm glad he's out of town until Fri. I was getting tired of all his second guessing me! I needed some time to chill. Did you all make this decision together? Or was it your idea first? Inquiring minds want to know...

Hey Guys!! I made it! I just got home to Knoxville from Nashville (where my surgery was.) Everything went very well. I'm not really even in that much discomfort, my abdomen just feels like it has gone through several thousand crunches. I can't even tell I have the band in. The only thing I've had today is Water, and it seems to go down normally! Thanks for everyone's thoughts and prayers, and I want to know how everyone else did today as well!!

Hi Jean,

We have both struggled with our weight our whole lives and have been together struggling for the last eight. We are getting older, enjoying life less and less because we are always tired and in some kind of pain. We decided to go to a seminar and took a few months to take yet another shot at dieting before making the decision that it is just so much easier to exercise if we were not carrying another person's weight on our backs everywhere we go. We are both more than 150# overweight. It is great, because we are there to support each other and right now he is out getting me Chinese for one last time. I just hope I can not be a big sissy and scare him out of joining me in bandland. We are self payers, so he is going to do it probably in the Winter when I am all better. I am really more scared of the pre-op diet than the post op one. I don't know how I will last 1 day on liquids much less 10. I am not fat because I have all this will power...

Keep us posted on your progress!

Diane

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
