No I didnt have a catheter w Dr Garcia anyway! I took sweat pants and lose things to wear after and the plane ride sucked after i was swollen and no room to move, was glad to get that over with! My incisions were all over and my worst one was the one right at the bottom of my bra in the center, my bra rubbed that one and still does 4 weeks post op, ive had a hard time getting that one to heal and its still sore! One thing to not forget is large band aids and some really small ones ...the tape they use pulled my skin off and i had blisters from it so i had to buy some extra ones! If u think u might want Jello after take it with you, i had a cpl bites 2 days after and it tasted great! I read alot of stuff people said you needed and i didnt need hardly any of, it they provide most of what u need after! They send u home w a care pkg!

Does Dr. Garcia perform a leak test on his patients?

Yes you have one the morning after surgery that you can see on a monitor as the Fluid goes into your new stomach and also a dye test that same day to see if anything goes into your drain. He is very thorough.

Good morning. I am having my surgery with Dr. Garcia on June 11. I have a long plane ride from Canada. Can anyone give me some pointers. I am also traveling alone due to the cost factor.

I want to apologize in advance if this is long.

My experience with Dr Garcia so far has been very good. Arrived to San Diego on Wednesday late evening. The original driver Samuel was unable to pick me up. His father was going to pick us up. He was delayed do to construction at the border. Once he arrived, I must admit that the car left much to be desired. We drove to the border where we just had to slow down a bit. Mexico lets you go into Mexico with little hassle.

Marriott was nice. Very friendly.

Surgery was Thursday and it went well. I have very little nausea. It mostly comes on when I wall and my pain increases. O have a JP drain that isn't draining anything. My pain is an intense ache made wore by deep breathing.

From what I understand, leak test will be performed Friday, today, and then clears.

So today is monday and i am feeling pretty good. I had my surgery on thursday and i am just a little sore.

eating is wierd. I don't have an issue when it comes to sip sip sip. I am a good sipper. I do experience quite a bit of heartburn oro maybe it's bloating. Id just get to feeling like my body can't accept anything else. It doesn't last long. I have a ton of gurggling. I must say that burping and farting have helped me to feel better. i do not regret my decisión and i am sure i won't.

My mom is here with me and we have gone to dinner and id never get nauseated nor do i wish i could be eating her meal.

I don't have access to a scale at this time. I'm not sure if i have lost anything yet. I did get on the scale at the hospital and i had gained weight. No surprise, i am sure it was Water weight. I am hopeful. We leave México today.

I have felt safe here the entire time. The hotel marriott is a very nice. My mom has been able to lay out at the pool and relax. I went to the pool for a little bit yesterday and it was nice.

The Hospital MI doctor was not in the nicest of areas, but i never needed to go outside. The 1st floor has a little room with a few chairs and a tv. there is also a little café that has a good selection of food. My mom brought little things to eat and warm up in a microwave, but the microwave was not easily accessible.

The 2nd floor was where the fluroscopy was for your leak test. There were also some offices there. The 3rd floor was the operating room floor and the patient rooms. The floor was small. 42 steps from my room at the end of one hall to the other end. If there were more than 2 people walking, it would turn into a traffic jam.

Any questions just ask!

Jenn

Thanks time4me. Every bit of information helps. What about bottled Water. Do you have to bring your own or purchase it.

Thanks again

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
