Hello all! New here & live in MI also. Didn't see this thread until now. I'm between Flint and Ann Arbor. Will be having surgery in January @ Barix Clinics with Dr. Poplawski. Nervous and excited. Glad to see some fellow members who live nearby! :)

Welcome, Daisy! This forum is a great source of "real people" information. You ask a question and there always someone who has an answer. If you need to rant, cheer or need a shoulder to cry on, there is someone (or many) who will be there for you.

I'm day three post op. the worst part of it I'd have to say was the hospital stay. I'm not going to dwell on that. I was discouraged on Tuesday but since I've been home I've gotten back to the right mind set. I met a woman an her daughter who had the bypass. They were very encouraging to talk to. The mom suggested to do Water aerobics when able. It really helps pull back the skin.

Hey everyone! I've been looking for some kind of support group online and I just found this site!

For my insurance I was required to have 8 months of medical documentation and December will be month five. I've had my psych evaluation and everything else and I've been cleared for surgery at this point, and I'll be done with my documentation in March and then I will be able to schedule surgery. So at this point I'm thinking my actual surgery will be in May or June!

Up until last week I really hadn't been taking surgery seriously because I was in the mindset that it was so far away, or that it just wouldn't happen for whatever reason, or just the fact that I honestly cannot even imagine being any other size so it all seems to unbelievable to me. But since I saw my doc last it has finally hit me that this is happening, if I want it to. And I've finally decided this is what I really want and I'm now allowing myself to get excited about it.

It's just crazy to imagine. I think that's going to be the hardest thing for me; learning to let go of how I've viewed myself for the last 25 years. I've always been big, so my weight has been a part of who I am and how I deal with things for so long. But I'm excited for this new, HUGE life change. Terrified, but also excited. Haha.

Anyway, I'm happy to have found this site and be able to talk to people who are going through, or have gone through, the same thing.

-Mary

Where are you having it done?

Sparrow in Lansing...they are the closest Bariatric COE and I had previously gone through them when I considered an RNY bypass a few years ago (decided malabsorption wasn't for me) and they are good people/good program. I also work in downtown Lansing so it will make follow up appointments easier etc.

I changed from RNY for the same reason and also the doctor couldn't guarantee the procedure to be laparoscopically done. I didn't want to be cut wide open.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
