African American Sleevers

  • Popular Post

Hi All!

I wanted to start a thread for African-American sleevers (no worries I HEART all sleevers from the rainbow). I just thought, no scientific proof, that African-American sleevers may respond to the surgery different than our lovely non-African American sleeved sisters and brothers. I wanted to know if we had the same skin issue, hair problems, and other surgery related issues. Also, how to deal with the culture shock. African-American "soul food" may be something of the past... or not. So I was just looking for a space to voice culture related issues and concens.

PS- I TRULY  ALL SLEEVERS.

Where do you find them. What do they taste like?

I am having the sleeve surgery Aug 21. Very nervous. How long will it take me to heal and return back to work, and what's the best protien shake to buy and where?

Your question relative to how long it will take to recover varies from person to person. I was sleeved on July 29th- I returned to work half days two weeks afterwards. My work does not require anything physical. It's the sitting all day that I was afraid of. Didn't want to risk blood clots. I have tried numerous proteins. My favorite right now is Chike, I've tried the Unjury but couldn't handle the after taste. I also like Opifast it comes already mixed just refrigerate and drink. This week I've bought this local deli soup chicken tortito and potato soup drained chunks out before eating, loved it, consumed 1/3 cup per meal. I drink crystal light in every water bottle. I hope this helps. Keep the faith and follow your doctor's orders. Keep in touch!

Thank you very much yellowbox.

I would suggest initially to stock-up in sugar-free Popsicles, chicken broth, sugar-free jello, pudding. Those are the things that helped to keep me hydrated during the 1st week post-op.

Has anyone used the Gastric Binder? I saw it on one of the Bariatrics online stores. I'm just curious.

OMG!!! I tried that protein shot too and I wanted to throw up!! I only drank a cap full. Disgusting!

I like the watermelon flavor protein shot. I mix it with vitamin water and drink it like that. I heard some people mix it with crystal light also.

The shot is nasty but it was mind over matter for me. Its worth the sacrifice in order to get my protein in.

My advice to you is do not stock up on any protein shakes because after surgery your taste buds may change. That happen to a lot of people. Including me. I threw out so many shakes mixes because I couldn't drink them. I'm 2 weeks post op and I can drink GNC and weight watches high protein I still struggle but I make my self drink them.

Costco makes a great protein shake called Premier Protein! It's fabulous! You may want to try it. It has 30 g of protein in each serving. They come pre-packaged and all you have to do is refrigerate them.
