Over 60 and having the sleeve

Recommended Posts

I'm 61 and I'm taking my first step in my VSG journey. The paperwork goes into the mail in the morning. Since I will be self-pay, I am hoping to have my surgery before I turn 62 in March but if not, oh well. Good things come to those who are patient. :)

Deb

Anyone from the SW WA area?

I turn 66 on Sat⛄and was revved onNov 12th. 2 weeks full liquids before surgery, 3 weeks afterwards. Now on soft Proteins until 2 months out. I also had a hiatal hernia repaired, nonfunctional gall bladder removed. Now working out at the gym. Can't use the Celebrex yet but off many of my meds. You can do this and it will be worth it.

I had sleeve surgery on Dec.11. 2012 a little over a month ago. I am 67 years old and have had 2 nausea moments, a lot of burping after eating, and serious sense of fullness after a few bites of (now) pureed meats. That's it... No complications that I so feared. Including my pre op, I have lost 31lbs. I don't know if I am a slow loser or not at my age. I am losing and I feel good.

If you are "older", please don't be afraid. There are people of all ages with complications and as many or more without. Life is risk. If you are thinking about this, you are at risk. Be prepared, read everything about this surgery then make the best decision for you. Don't reject it because of age.

And we are at risk from the obesity. Either way brings risks, but the risks of surgery were SO worth the rewards! I don't belong in this forum because I was only 59 when I was sleeved, but close enough!

Yeah, I moved over hear after I turned 60 in October. I was in the 50's group since I was sleeved almost 4 years ago.

It bums me out that I've gained a little back, but I'm still thrilled to look as I do at 60. I don't have to dress like an old frumpy lady because the plus sized clothes are usually not very cute.

I am 62 and I had my sleeve on Jan 9. I'm doing great so far. My MI/Blue/Cross paid for it. I'm a slow looser but that's OK as it took a long time to put all this weight on. Wish I had done it earlier.

Hi - my name is Debbie and I will be 63 in April hopping to get my sleeve in June. I am 234 today, high was 244 and am hoping to ge to 150 or so. Dr didn't think I would have any problems with the sleeve. That was the surgeon. Am on the 6 mo diet for insurance, mseeing the nut and need to schedule psyche eval. Guess I am nervous about that one. Can't wait to get approved and get a date. Then I will get nervous!

I had my VSG surgery on Feb. 4 along with Hiatal Hernia repair. So far so good! One little annoyance is the burping after eating or drinking. I started out at 227 and when I weighed on Feb. 24th, was down to 208. I was diabetic with high blood pressure and have been able to stop my diabetic medicine and hope to be off BP meds soon. I am 60 and thought that might be a problem but had no problem getting BC/BS of Illinois to approve. Only wish I had done this several years ago. Don't let age hold you back!

Take it one step at a time! I don't regret it.....except when I want to eat something I know I can't and then just for a few minutes. HA HA

Seriously, I was 65 when I had it in Nov. and chose the sleeve over the bypass which insurance would have paid for. (Michigan) I've lost 50 pounds, weight less than I have for more years than I can remember!!!! I'm getting ready to train at 66 to walk or run a 5 K with the group from my surgeon's office and the nut. I'm getting a treadmill again so I can workout at home and will continue to go to Water aerobics at the Y. Hope all is well!

Well, it's been almost 2 months since I last made a comment here. I was doing great until I hit solids. Everything I eat hits the upper part of my sleeve and plays "elevator full of Water with a cork on top"...floating up and down, throat to tiny tummy and back again. This starts about an hour after I finish eating (I have no feeling of fullness- I just quit eating after a small amount) and lasts for another hour or so. Just about time to eat again. I'm having a hard time getting my water in because my tummy doesn't settle down enough to drink very much. I was so looking forward to eating solids but it has been a real challenge. I chew and chew - even got an egg timer to remind me to take time between bites. Soda crackers and Protein Drinks are the only things that go down gently. Nothing hurts, just a very full feeling that travels up and down. I had breezed through the whole process until now. Man, I thought I would be the exception to all the rules. But sleeve has fun with all of us...now it's my turn. Lost 44lbs so I will cope :-)

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
