Over 60 and having the sleeve

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved on 9/21/15 at the age of 60. For the first time in my life I have hope that I will be able to keep my weight under control. This has been one of the best decision I've made. I'm from Michigan.

I've been lurking around and very, very occasionally posting so why did I miss the over sixties group! Everyone seems to be so young here, I couldn't believe I was alone, well here you all are and it's lovely to meet you. I'm 67, that's my calendar age but really it's rubbish. I feel more like 50 or so. After some gentle encouragement from my GP, I have type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure, I went to see the surgeon about 16 months ago with the intention of having a band. However I had to increase my health care cover and wait for 12 months before I could go ahead. To cut a very long story short, I'm scheduled for 16th May but decided to have the sleeve instead after reading some negative feedback about the band. I'm scared but excited at the same time. I want a new, healthier me going forward.

Carolyn,

I am 69 and had my surgery 3/28/16. Not seeing a lot of us older girls out there.

Exactly, not many of us older gals to compare notes with. Still very early days for you, how are you feeling?

I had sleeve surgery 12/30/15..... right before my 64th birthday. I have sleep apnea and chronic high blood pressure due to my weight. The sleeve was the smartest decision I've ever made and should have done it a lot sooner. I wasted many years being so overweight and damaging my health. Good luck with your surgery......I'm sure you will have no regrets. I honestly do feel like a have a "new lease on life"!! :)

Hi Texy, I so badly want that new lease on life, not that I feel so dreadful now. It's good to hear that you have no regrets. What I’m hopefully going to get rid of, or maybe partially ease, is the dreadful sweats. The slightest bit of exercise and it’s like someone has turned on a tap on my head. Anyone else have this issue? Last night I went to a party in a restaurant with allocated seating. I was seated next to a lady who was even heavier than me, the space that was left was very, very snug. I want to be able to glide into that space with inches to spare, albeit then to push the food round my plate lol (but you can’t have everything). I’m from Yanchep in sunny Western Australia.

Cathy48,

Yes, yes the dreadful sweats will soon leave and be replaced with new found energy!:) I'm doing things now that I haven't done in years. My husband bought me a bicycle, today and we're going to start riding together. I'm 64y/o and haven't been on a bike in over 40yrs so this should be a real adventure. :) Next week, I'm starting at a gym with a personal trainer...I hope my new found energy doesn't exceed my physical ability. :) I was on 3 blood pressure meds and the side effects were ruining my life. Now, two of those meds have been eliminated and that has a lot to do with my since of a "new lease on life". Yes, you will be able to glide into spaces you never thought possible.

So good to hear from all of you. I am feeling pretty good post surgery day six. I am hungry. I am doing my 60 g of Protein and my 64 oz. of liquids but still hungry. Hope I don't have to live with this constant feeling forever. I had the best medical people in the world. I have had a couple bad episodes in the hospital before but these folks were terrific.

I was sleeved 1/11/16 ,I turned 64 2/1/16. It's been almost 12 weeks and I can see a big difference! My sleeping has improved, I'm walking better, clothes look better....I'm going to start Water aerobics soon!!...I getting to understand that this is just a tool, I still have to make better food choices, but I'm ready ,to have my life back.

Boy do I need help. I forgot it was only a tool and after I lost 60 lbs., I started eating like a person without a weight problem.. I am 68 years old, had the sleeve 3 years ago and gained most of that weight back. Have insulin dependant diabetes that got worse instead of better, have severe arthritis that limits my physical workouts including 2 artificial knees. I am a registered nurse and should have known better. The only thing I do is Water exercise.

Hi ckunes. Don't be so hard on yourself, we all make mistakes and fall back into old habits sometimes. The key is to realize where you went wrong and go from there. Like you said, you are a RN so you know what you have to do. I wish you the best going forward.

I had my 3 mo check up, my surgeon was very pleased with my progress. My cholesterol levels are normal, I'm off of my BP meds and my venis statis wound has healed. So far this decision to get the sleeve at my age has been a wise choice.

I am so happy to find that there are others in my age group. I am 62 and thought that I had waited too long to make the decision to have gastric sleeve surgery. I was relieved to have the doctor confirm that It is not too late. I am waiting for insurance approval and have started the ore-op tests in the meantime. Hope to have the surgery late July or early August.

Those of you that already had surgery, how long was your hospital stay?

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
