i'd like to hear from the smaller sleeve patients out there

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am 5'2 1/2" (got to add that extra half inch). I was 200lbs with a BMI of 36 when I had surgery on 8-24. I felt uncomfortable for the first five days post op no real pain just a bit sore. It got better everyday and by day 6 I was feeling about 85% and was 100% one week out. I only had real issues with gas pain the first night in the hospital after that nothing. I would think the smaller you are the less gas they need to use during surgery. I also think that a lot of the larger patients have more issues with the weight of their tummies pulling a bit. I know I have seen some people mention bindings. I'll be one month out on Tuesday and have lost already 20lbs.

I lost most of my weight with the band but gained some back when I started having band problems.

I weighed 167 the day I had my revision surgery and I weigh 130 now.

I basically had no recovery. I was walking around outside the hospital the day after surgery. I had surgery on a Wed. and went back to work on Monday.

I want your cute little ticker!

Thanks. Just go to Weight-loss-center.net on the right side you will see the link for tickers. I had a hard time getting it set up so I just copy and paste. They have a lot of cute ones.

I started at 199 I am 5'4(almost) and I weighed yesterday and I weigh 169. I wont update my ticker until friday which is my official weigh in date. The last two weeks I have lost a ton which is almost unheard of for lower BMI'ers.

I have been tracking my food I try to get between 750-900 calories a day. I get my 70 gram of Protein. I don't really stress on the carbs I just like them under 50 and I don't get them from white breads or Pasta normally. I did have a slice of pizza and a bite of cake at my sons birthday party.

I exercise a few days a week for 45 minutes on the treadmill and I have been doing one day a week of extreme fitness, where I go walk this hill up and over and back. It takes about an hour and fifteen minutes and burns around 800-900 calories. It is great toning for the legs too.

It is not easy, I feel like I am having to work but I feel full with very little so that helps a TON. I just know now while I watch what I eat and do the exercise it is not futile. It makes a big difference.

I am 5'6" and started out at 203 pounds. BMI of 32.8 so was considered a lightweight. However, my surgeon agreed that with my family history and failure to maintain weightloss, I was an ideal candidate for VSG.

Was recovery easy? For me, no. I had a lot of pain from gas and the incisions. The good news is that it only lasted a few days. Much easier week 2. After week 2, I was pretty much like my old self. http://verticalsleevetalk.com/post-operation-vertical-sleeve-gastric-surgery-vsg-questions-answers/3493-surgery-recovery-sucks.html

Would I do it again? ABSOLUTELY!!!! I feel so much healthier, younger, and I'll just say it "Cuter". I love going to stores & not feeling like they are thinking "there is no way she can fit in our clothes".

My lab results are great and my energy level is higher than I remember it being before. I can go to the store, shop, load it in the car, bring it in, put it away & not feel like I need a nap. Yahoo!

Good luck with your own journey.

I'm 5ft and at surgery was 240lbs. I've lost 15 pounds in under 2weeks. When I had my surgery I had almost no pain. It took about a week to get my energy back. I think my recovery was fantastic. I just wish time would move quicker so I can lose more weight!

i know that some of you guys posted your recovery time before going back to work. from what ive picked up on is that the recovery time is somewhat shorter(maybe not). if some of the rest could post their recovery time it would be really really helpful. i'm getting sleeved sometime very soon and i really wanna be out the least amount of days possible. i have a 36 BMI so just wondering even though i know we're all different and recover differently. thx guys

I had a BMI of 36.1 and had a really speedy recovery. I don't work but I have 3 children (including 10 month old baby) and after a week I was feeling really well, out and about. I would take it easy though, for about 2 weeks, depending on what type of job you have.

Hi Melissa. I'm 5-3, was 202# at my sleeve surgery 6 days ago. I'm back at work since Monday, feeling pretty good. Can't say its easier than what other people experienced, but I'm feeling pretty good. My surgery was last Thurs. I flew to San Diego on Weds, flew home on Sunday, back at work for a 1/2 day on Monday, and full day yesterday, and full time from here on out. It would have been lovely to take a little more time off, but I don't have that kind of flexibility in my job, and its really working out fine.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
