Why Can't I Eat Right After A Fill?

Recommended Posts

Wow Hazel' date=' I think you're very condescending I don't think there is anything wrong with asking why, clearly you don't have an answer but thought you should respond to my question with a smart Alec rhetorical questions which leads me to believe that you're the type of person who judges and looks down at others to elevate yourself. If you don't have an answer to why we are told no solid foods for 24 hrs please do me a favour and refrain from responding to my posts I have to deal with people like you in my life everyday who feel they can judge me because I'm fat and I don't want to deal with that nonsense here especially in this forum where we are all supposed to be here to support and encourage one another.[/quote']

I agree with mawgrot! This forum is for support! We should be able to ask any questions we want. Every single one of us FAILED at weight loss and that's why we ALL decided on weight loss surgery. Just because some of us have been banded longer than others doesnt give them the right to be disrespectful. Sometimes I see questions posted where the answer is obvious, but if I decided to respond it is only out of concern and for support. If we didn't need support, none of us would be a part of this forum. I am 42 years old and I still hold on to what my mother taught me at 5 'if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all".

To Hazel: you were once where we are now. How could you forget that!

On another note to anyone reading my response, I would like to say that sometimes new bandsters ask questions like the one mawgrot asked because they get on this forum and here constant contradictory statements made by bandsters. How many of us ave cheated or fallen off the wagon? If you can't be supportive to a thread/post, don't respond. Thank you to everyone else who has been nice in explaining stuff to us.

I do welcome honesty what I don't want is sarcasm and belittling rhetorical questions to my questions. Being honest does not mean that you have to be a witch (trying real hard to be polite here Hazel) about it. Keep your comments dignified and honest the rudeness and condescension I could do without. I love how belligerent people always seem to disguise their behaviour with "just being honest" and being "extremely passionate" about their feelings like that gives them the right to get "spiffy" with others' date=' it's an excuse for cutting others down. Just being honest ;-)[/quote']

I agree mawgrot! Honesty has nothing to do with how you deliver the message.

So immediately after ur fill ur able to eat solids right away without any discomfort?

Do u mind me asking how many cc's we're tlkn about?

And how much does ur band hold?

I was the same way' date=' able to eat anything, breads, rice, etc at 3cc's but not so much now that im at 4 in a band tht holds 10.[/quote']

Hex pepper. I was the same as you. After my second fill I could still eat bread and rice. Now, after my third fill, I can't! :(

Once where you were now? As if I'm not still a work in progress.

I come on here daily and help people all the time. I am very mindful of the struggles that I deal with to this very day. So you are quite presumptive yourself.

Perhaps my frustration has caught up with me. I apologize for my comment (or the tone). But it really is remarkable how negligent some bandsters are being. There's a huge distinction to 'cheating' as in having some icecream, to 'hurting' yourself through actions that will effect the band (not your weight) itself.

Apologies

Thank you so much Hecat2 I'm personally sick and tired of people hiding behind their computer screens and typing things to people they wouldn't have the guts to say to their face it's cowardly. I love your post and appreciate your support, I wanted Hazel to be aware of her behaviour and think about why she feels that she is entitled to speak like that to others she. it's clearly a reflection on her because she could have answered the question and then advise me but instead she made a cheap shot. I've been dealing with people like her ( people who make cheap shots) and I won't stand for it anymore. Negativity and negative people will cause me too lose my focus, but on a more positive note I am back on fluids now and will continue to follow my doctors orders no solids for me for the next 48 hrs. Thank you so much for your words of encouragement

Hazel there is helping people and then there is bringing someone down, please be mindful of your negativity and how it may impact someone. I welcome the help and honesty I've received a lot of honest answers and advice from the other banisters here just from posting and I am happy to say that I've headed their advice and will follow my doctors orders. Truthfully this was my first mess up and I was freaking out I was scared that I may have done something to mess up my surgery or the band. I wasn't feeling any pain or discomfort so I wanted to know why? I failed yesterday on my weight loss journey because of some immense pressure and stress currently in my life and it all came to a head on Friday and I needed to talk... I am a compulsive eater and when stress and anxiety take over I (it's like I'm locked in a trance ) My support person (my dear husband) was at work and could not pick up his phone so I decided to download this app and join the community to look for support from the only other people who know exactly how i feel and what i'm going through. Please continue to help others I welcome the advice i fail to see how you were trying to help me in this particular instance though. It sounds like your heart is in the right place but your actions say something different. Let your actions reflect what is really in your heart, moving forward keep the negativity out say what you need to say but please be respectful is all I'm asking.

Thank you big cheese for the advice, I'll be careful I promise.

Thank you all (well most of you ;-) ) for your support and words of encouragement to stick to the doctors orders' date=' the truth of the matter is I've been under an extreme amount of stress this week ( lack of sleep, getting mortgage approval, fertility treatments and testing and my hell on earth job) and everything toppled down on me today lick a tone of bricks. I messed up and ate solids after my fill today, today was the first time I broke the rules by not following the doctor's orders and I was scared that I had ruined my surgery and or caused some sort of physical damage to my body. Since the installation of my slimband 1 year ago it has really helped me with my emotional eating and I've prided myself on being able to stick with the program. I feel horrible that I let the stress in my life affect me this way but I am determined to get back on track and SOME of the feedback I've received here has really helped me get my mind straight and get myself back on track. I've had my Slimband for a year this was my third fill, I have a 10 cc band and I currently have 7.5 cc's in my band as today. I would like others in the lapband talk community to know that I am in no way advocating that they not follow their doctor's orders I would encourage everyone to stick to the rules and if you're feeling emotional or upset reach out and talk it through. The Lapband talk really really helped me in that regard; my hubby was at work and unable to answer my call, so I ate I wish I had thought about coming to lapband talk first. I found the majority of people here at lapband talk to be very honest and kind, I've learned that staying negative or allowing negative people to permeate your space will set you up for failure so avoid them at all cost. So with that I didn't beat myself up ( I used to beat myself up in the past, but ever since i've had the slimband installed I've become a whole lot mentally stronger) moving forward I'm just going to dust myself off and move forward. I will be back on liquids for the next 24 hours and then move to thicker liquids for the next 24 hours and then back on solids. And the next time I'm feeling overwhelmed, upset and or stressed out I will log on here and vent :-) Thank you for responding to my post.[/quote']

Hang in there! You have my support (((hugs))).

Thank you dear This is a work in progress and I intend to see it through, Thank you for the encouragement and now that I know eating after a fill could cause damage to my esophagus I won't do this again, I have to say I was lucky I didn't get stuck or have to vomit that would have jeopardized my health and my band. Now that I know better I'll do better. This experience has thought me that I'm still vulnerable to compulsive emotional eating behaviours and I need to put a plan in place to cope with my stress and compulsive reactions to that stress. Thank you for the words of encouragement :-)

There goes that tone again. You must really be going through something in your life. I'll pray for you.

Ok, I have to admit I have gotten the 'tone' sometimes that you all accuse hazel of. While for you, this is your first time, for some of us who have been around a long time, seeing the VERY similar posts of 'I was told not to eat by medical team but I did anyway, will I be okay?' starts to get very frustrating. And no you don't have to be 'going through something in your life' to get tired of the frequent non-compliance you see from new bandsters EVERY SINGLE DAY.

Make no mistake, just because you can today doesn't mean you will be able to for the next fill. If you fool yourself into thinking you know better than the medical instructions you get, you run the risk of getting stuck while your stoma is swollen, cause more swelling, cause vomiting, dehydration, a possible slip, possible erosion. It's amazing to me that people don't take this more seriously. If you broke your arm, would you question whether you would need to wear a cast? No, of course not. No difference here.

I think the worst thing that happens on this board are people thinking that support means other people telling you that what you're doing is fine, and you'll be ok. I've been around long enough, seen WAY too many complications as a result of non-compliance to know it's not true. So I won't say it. And if the tone comes out wrongly, it's only because I've said it so many times to so many people, who just don't bother to listen because I'm not saying what they want to hear.

Which is why so many veterans, with amazing knowledge and amazing experience and with so much to share, don't post any more.

lol lellow, I didn't bother to explain....

But I'm being prayed for, so (giggles) suddenly my life issues (which I wasnt aware I had) are now going to heal themselves and I'm going to turn into a hand holder...just you wait <wink>

I'm agreeing with lellow. We have had our bands for over five years and our weight loss goals have been met. We all have been where you are and know what will/can happen if doctor's orders are not followed. I did the exact same thing, but I was two yrs post-op. I went out for dinner later that evening of my fill and had an enchilada, later that night my tummy was cramping. I had to return to my doctor's office the very next morning. He took out my fill to let my stomach rest and told me if I did this again he would be referring me to another physician. He then gave me a 20 min lecturer about following his orders. To this day I never did that again. This site is great for advice and sometimes to vent, without any drama. I wish you best success on your journey.

Good point lellow I came here for answers and I got them what you and Hazel don't seem to understand is you can make your point without being a b***h. hazel didn't even answer the question so what's the point of responding? It it was obvious that hazel responded just o show her frustration and I could care less for that type of information. No one held my hand they all answered the question that I asked and advised that I follow the doctor's instruction. At this point I realize that this is a character flaw and people like Hazel don't get it and it sounds like you don't either if you're fed up you don't need to reply because you're not helping. I've realized that there are young people in this talk lapband community who may not have the emotional maturity to tell people like you and Hazel where they can stuff that so called help and it may cause them to eat more the behaviour is unnecessary and the fact that you and hazel can't see that is mind blowing to me. At this point we are no longer talking about lapband and again I fail to see how keeping this conversation going is going to help. I did not come on here to get into a silly immature cat fight with a bunch of women.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
