female only Salon/barber chairs & weight limit

So when I was at my heaviest, I had a really bad experience at a salon. Although the hairdresser didn't say anything to me, I am pretty sure I broke the hydraulic pump. When she was foot pumping me up, there was a pop and the chair went back down - then she just cut my hair in the low position. A lady next to me stared at me in disgust for the entire visit, which I tried to ignore.

Anyway, I'm sure I exceeded the weight limit at well over 330, though I never weighed myself then so I'm guessing. Now I'm in the 270s and I haven't dared venture to a salon since that experience a few years ago, but now I have a Groupon for a really nice place and I'm ready for a big change. My hair is nearly homeschool/sister-wife length, and it's weighing me down, man.

Any of you formerly or presently super or morbidly obese ladies had experience with salon chairs? My butt was a size 28 then, now I'm in a 22. Should I go for it or wait until I hit 250?

I may call the salon and ask, but that's so embarrassing.

woman please-----speaking from a size 30 pant about 10 months ago, i can understand the fear of breaking chairs....i went to the hair salon in feb and well, i didnt break it......and i went before xmas and didnt break it......def just go....get your hair done and be gorgeous....YOU WONT break it..

Just FYI...

The standard weight capacity of most salon chairs is around 350 lbs. Personally, I would blame the salon for not maintaining their equipment or buying a sub-standard product!

Im 370 and I just left the salon on Tuesday. I learned to ignore the stares if they stare or I just stare back and they would usually just turn their heads. At 270, I think you'd be fine to go back to the salon with no problem with the chair. Go for it!!!!

I know the barber shop chairs in my barber's shop can easily handle over 300 pounds. Do the ladie's salons use smaller chairs? Commercial grade chairs

should be designed to handle all clients.

My worse experience was breaking a wood chair in my eye doctor's office

I was at 275 and I go all the time to get my do done. It never crossed my mind that a chair would not be able to support me. Go enjoy yourself and get a new fabulous do for the new fabulous you!

HAhha sister wife length.. you're funny! I've been a hairstylist for 13 yrs and no one has ever broken my or other coworker's chairs... even the woman who has got to be 450 lbs ( she can't stand long enough to pay the front). I've heard the pop when a skinny co worker sat it in- it's a hydraulic malfunction or some other part.

I promise that stylist felt just as bad for you as you did yourself sweetie, Try another salon..a fresh start might be nice, unless you love that stylist!

So I did it! Happy to say there was no breaking of any chairs this time, but I'll admit I was sweating about it. I had a great experience, and I feel like a new person! Here is a semi-recent before picture (showing the prairie length) and the new do.
