October 2012 Bandsters

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I was banded on Oct 11 as well. My Doctor kept me overnight also. Oddly enough, my shoulder pain started flailing up on me today. My Doctor put me on purées almost right out of the hospital. I actually tried "mushies" today. I probably shouldn't have but it went down ok and didn't make me nauseous. I had a business meeting at lunch today, and got Soup, but most were loaded with bready noodles. My only other complaint is a burning feeling below the largest scar on occasion.

Had my surgery Monday 10/8 and was back to work this monday. Towards the end of the day I feel tired and a little sore but I'm glad to be back and every day I feel a little better. I feel tight in the morning so I've been doing Protein shakes with 3-4 oz of Water. Which makes them thick but it's been working. And I dont want any judgment but I moved on to soft and purreed food. I eat things like chicken salad- finely minced grilled chicken and low fat mayo, tuna salad and small curd cottage cheese. I really started feeling better after I worked these more solid foods in. I've been feeling great and have lost approx. 8 pounds since surgery.

Anyone else back to work-- how is it going?

I also noticed stress makes my band and stomach feel tight-- anyone else?

I was banded oct 5 and went back to work oct 8. While I didn't have any trouble at work I did have to walk a LOT in the evening. The advantage of staying home vs going back to work is you have time to walk off the gas. I sit at a desk all day and would get up 5 min every hour but it still was uncomfortable.

I only used one day of vacation day so far ( didn't tell my boss about surgery) so not too bad. I'm going to take a week off in November so I can get my workout routine in place.

Yes stress makes it all tight for me too!

Had three small drinks of a Protein Shake this morning and took my first shower!!!! Felt amazing. Have headache backache and shoulder pain off and on. Thinking about seeing my chiropractor for a pro adjustment (it's a machine not a twist) and some heat therapy lol

I had pre-scheduled vacation last year for a big trip with my mom and was already planning on being off work 2 weeks when I decided to do my surgery instead of us going. So I had mine on the 4th and went back to work on the 15th...this week! Glad tomorrow is Friday. Next week is going to be a ton of OT (the rest of this month probably!) to make up for being off that long.

Mines itch to....But I thought maybe it was the glue that they close me with. My 88yr old grandma said that means they are healing. Might be something to that. Lol

they used glue on me too! I wonder if that is something to do with it. I took off my bandages and the scabs are dry and starting to come away though so I i think that might be part of it too. I"m just doing everything not to itch them :-)

I had my first shower today too! It was like I'd never taken a shower before or something! Sponge baths are a joke...I hadn't felt really clean since I showered before going in for surgery last weekend!

I get the random shoulder pain every now and again and the doctor said that was just the carbon from the surgery working its way out. I've been back to work since 2 days after surgery and walking around a lot though so I'm seriously wondering how much they put in me that it's still working its way out!

Banded Oct 15 late in the day and had to stay overnight. Since being home I have slept very well. Had to take bandages off today b/c I was starting to itch & break out in slight rash from adhesives. Starting full liquids for 30 days tomorrow.

I've had trouble "sipping" Water. I sip but to frequently, but I think I have that worked out.

Not having gas pains ,yet?!?

Best wishes to all!

Started full liquids today. Got to have cheddar cheese Soup with some taco season. Never thought it would be so good to have a "normal" meal!

Don't forget that even if you eat out you can get good mushies. All restaurants have blenders and will chop up what ever you want. I used to get fish or scrambled eggs and mash them with a fork. Or any meat chopped really fine with broth or mayo. Good luck!

Anyone know how many calories they are eating? I'm on mushies and Myfitnesspal says I'm eating about 500-600 calories a day.

Just wondering what others are taking in.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
