Weight Loss, Periods, Mirena

Recommended Posts

Have had the Mirena for four years and haven't had any signs of a period for at least three years. Now I've lost 43 lbs and suddenly I am having a super light period. I know weight loss can effect your cycle and in the past it definitely has affected my cycle. I just was surprised that I would have this since I have Mirena. Thoughts?

I have the merina and have gotten periods (regular 6-7 day very very light flow) since it was put in. I am still quite a bit away from surgery - but as a merina person wanted to say a period is normal and no period is normal too.

I've had mine in place for a year now and havent had a period for 9 months. The first 3 months I had very sporadic periods and then they just stopped. Not complaining about that!!

I have heard that the Mirena is good for up to 5 years and after 5 years it needs to be replaced...maybe if you're having periods suddenly and it's been almost 5 years, it might be time to replace it?

I am on my second mirena. The first one I had for 5 yrs. I haven't had a period now for 7 yrs. however towards the 5 yr mark I spotted a little bit. I got my new one and haven't had anything since. My band didn't change my cycle/bleeding at all.

I have had an IUD for the past 12 months and had not had a period for almost 3 years! (I was on Depo before IUD). Well I finally had restriction in my band about 3 months ago and all of a sudden I have a period again! I think as you lose weight (i've lost 30lbs) your cycle changes a lot. My doctor didn't go into it much but advised me that if i wasn't trying to get pregnant to make sure i am on birth control because the weight loss would definitely affect me.

When mirena's hormones start to wane at approaching five years, your periods will return lightly. Your problem is probably a combo of the weight loss and your mirena is old. Check with your gyn to confirm. Always good to get someone to "look under the hood".

All, this is some food for thought. My awesome husband "took one for the team" and had a vasectomy last summer. I'm wondering if my periods will get heavier as I lose and will need to go back on Birth Control. I hate the hormones associated with BC. Hmmmmm??????

Rose:

If your cycle changes even with the IUD, if it becomes unusally heavy(clotting), painful cramps, longer in durration. Or scant almost non present. See your obgyn, that warrants an evaluation. And yes weightloss of fifty pounds or more can change our cycles. It can in some cases restore ovulation and make our periods more regular in time frame. So just keep that in mind.

I had been cycling birth control pills for years with out periods. Then when I started losing alot of weight (now at 153 lbs lost) I started getting periods again and they were irregular and long. I went to my Gyno and she put me on the Depo. I was doing ok with that, besides the weight gain and nausea the 1st few days after getting the shot and my periods were becoming normal. Then I made the decision to have a tubal ligation so that I could stop using birth control all together. Well, here came the irregular periods again and frequent too...like 1 every week or two. It was awful! My Gyno put me on the Ortho Estra patch to regulate my periods. It has helped, but here I am using horomones again. She suggested an "Abulation" procedure and also said I am Pari-menopausal too. I am considering the procedure because I do not want to continue using horomones..I have had a blod clot before and heart disease runs in my family. I am scared of having a stroke too. So I really don't want to continue using something that could cause me to have serious medical problems. Uggghh....so frustrating!

deffinately go to see your obgyn having your period within a week of eachother is clarly dysfunctional uterine bleeding and needs to be asessed by your obgyn. Sometimes after not having a period for a very long time the lining just hangs on in the utuerus, then "sloughs off" due to the weight of the lining. I know being a womman is disucsting at times. Sometimes Provera can help to keep you regular or if you are not considering kids the uterine cauterization would deffinately help. but again talk to your obgyn

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
