How Soon After Surgery Before I Can Exercise?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I had my surgery on the 07/27/2012, so this is my third week post-op. I'm feeling fine, been going to work and been walking around and stuff but I was wondering when I can start going to gym? How long before I can do a fitness class or lift weights etc? And advice is highly appreciative. Thanks :)

Lifting weights and abdominal workouts will be a few months. Always check with your Dr first. Cardio is really all you should do at this point. I think it was a little over 3 months until I was comfortable enough to do light weight training and a good 6 months until I started my core workouts. It wont take long once you are healed. You probably will feel pulling in your muscles at first but as long as there is no pain you should be good to go.

I wasn't cleared for anything other than walking until about week 5. It all depends on your doctor and how you are healing.

I would check with your Dr. too. I'm two weeks post op tomorrow and my Dr. said I could go back to the gym next week.

I was happy I was told I could go swimming 2 weeks post op. I am moving a lot around the Water lately, yesterday I walked around the pool at least a dozen times. Dove underneath water tons of times. the only thing I felt was a small tiny tugging around my port area when I had to get out of the pool to climb the ladder, I was very careful, actually I really crawled up the ladder and just took my time, but let me tell you when you are wet climbing out of the water it feels like you weight 10 pounds heavier! blah! I spent 5 hours straight moving around the water and it felt good, .. no pressure, no pain. It felt really good to be in the water. I soooo love the water!!

You are lucky, I had to wait six weeks to get into the pool.

I love the pool too!

It really depends on how active you were before your surgery. I was walking on the treadmill within a couple days, and back on the elliptical machine for an hour after a week. The only exception would be swimming...you absolutely MUST wait until you form scabs over your incisions. If you get in the pool too early, you put yourself at risk for a major infection...public pools are disgusting!! The other exception would be ab/core work...even two years post-op, I only do that stuff once or twice a week!

I had surgery on July 23rd and I walk, ride recumbent bike, and last week started weight training on my arms. Haven't done any lower body weight training yet. I feel great!!! Call dr and do what your body tells you to do. If it hurts-don't do it.

My plan was to do everything I can to get in some kind of shape before the surgery. I joined the gym and got a personal trainer in March. Now, I exercise 6 days of the week; one of those days is Water aerobics which is my fun slacker class. I'm hoping this will help somehow. I just can't stand the idea of stopping for a long time; hoping I can get back to my routine 2 weeks after the surgery.

I love Water aerobics. I have created my own hour long routine that I now do on my own 3-5 days a week and bike ride and strength train for an hour the other days. I love the pool because I get a good workout and don't even feel like I did anything!

wow

I was on the treadmill 4 days post up. Jumping on the trampoline a week post op

No sit-ups for about 2 weeks

But I was feeling excellent after surgery- didn't even need pain meds or anything so my doc wasn't too worried

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
