I've developed a night cough that accurs in the middle of the night and unaware of how it happened.

I've had my band for almost a year now and havent needed an adjustment since December but recently have developed the cough in the middle of the night which is so forceful I sometimes vomit acid.

I have had some bad acid reflex for a while now and than went out of the country recently where the cough developed and thought the cough was from the different food (especially since I had trouble with the food and often had to throw it up) but now that I'm back home I'm still getting the cough and worried it could be due to slippage.

Any suggestions?

I would suggest that you see your doctor about this and ask for a chest x-ray. It may or may not be related to the band. Here is why I'm suggesting it...

My family doctor cautioned me about this type of thing. He said that he has had 2 patients who had an unexplained cough, mainly at night, and who were both banded. The cough was caused by the reflux, which somehow caused the stuff you reflux up to get into the lungs. The result was Fluid in their lungs and an abscess that was causing the cough. One of the patients developed pneumonia also.

So, just to be on the safe side, I'd check into it. Hopefully you will find out you are fine, but best to check on it.

You are probably too tight. Get a slight unfill and I'll bet that will fix your problem. I had the night cough with no reflux so I kept blaming it on allergies. I finally decided to get a tiny unfill and it fixed my problem. Either way you look at it, you should probably see your doctor. Good luck to you!

Do not hesitate to go see the doc! I cannot stress this enough it will only get worse odds are u are just a little to tight and the doc can do a barium swallow to check but if you keep waitin around (like I did) it will get terrible and lets just say I literally have spent the last month tryin to fight my way back to healthy all because I was stubborn. It turned into serious swelling and inflamation in my pouch from all the acid reflux sitting in there over night and I ended up not being able to eat drink or even swallow my own spit and I ended up dehydrated and almost choked to death in my sleep luckly my hubby woke me..

Not tryin to scare you just dont want you to get to this point because now I am fighting my way back threw dehyration and Constipation and all kinds of junk over somethin I could have solved months ago

I developed a night cough about 5 mths ago. I had severe reflux too. I was too afraid of getting an unfill for fear I'd gain weight. Last month I just couldn't stand the acid any more. Went in and they found I had slipped my band. Probably from all the vomiting I did over the past over 2 yrs. They took out 1/2 my fill and I'm scheduled to go back for a fill tomorrow. It went away the night I had the unfill. sleeping like a baby now.

Hopefully my band is fixed now and I won't have the same problems after they refill it. You really need to see a doctor. My primary care dr told me that severe reflux untreated can eventually cause esophageal cancer. Good luck to you!

I've been having these night coughs since my last fill a week ago.

I sleep in a recliner now so its not as bad as lying flat.

I have 2 sleeved neighbors who've got the same night cough issue.

Since the sleeve isnt adjustable theyre stuck w/this which sorta makes me happy that I chose lap band instead.

I would go to the doctor immediately as there is so much damage that kind of acid can do to the esophagus, etc. without our even knowing it. Take good care!

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
