What Can I Start Doing

Recommended Posts

I have just found out that I am approved for the surgery however I don't have a date yet. Going on the information I got at my first visit I should be haivng this done end of July, first part of August.

My question is what can I start to do now that will help me deal with the 2 week pre op diet. I have already stopped drinking pop....I just want to make things go as good as possible!!

Just healthy eating in general. The more you are used to smaller serving sizes and no snacking the easier it is after surgery

Clean out your cupboards and fridge of any tempting foods...I found it easier to eliminate junk food from the house...that way when I did get the urge to snack...there were only healthy options available. Stock up on sugar free popsicles. I have a major sweet tooth and they have been a lifesaver.

I agree. I spent the first few weeks on getting off of soda and coffee. Once that was under control I moved to fast food. The last thing I worked on was suger. I took baby steps that way when I did have surgery it wasn't a big deal and I didn't go through alot of withdraw simptoms.

Definitely begin to wean yourself off of caffeine to avoid a major headache later...and I agree with what everyone else has posted about the carbs that may tempt you...

This is the time to begin to change your mindset and thoughts about your relationship with food. If you are aware of any unhealthy eating habits, begin the process of change.

The only other thing I would add is that you should also begin to include exercise into your daily routine if you have not already done so. Find out if your surgeon has a "weight" that you must be under by the time of your pre op appointment, and work your diet and exercise to get there.

I found out about my surgery approval right after returning from a family cruise...along with the "weight" I needed to be under by my pre op appointment...only 2.5 weeks away. Needless to say, I went into a panic mode as I was 6 pounds over the designated number. I don't like to operate under stress...

Best wishes as you move forward with your weight loss journey!

If you eliminate most or all carbs you will greatly reduce your food cravings making pre op diet easier. You will feel way less hungry. However, your pre opt may even be a low carb or adkins diet. Mine was, I didnt have to do shakes at all. Lost 10 lbs and surgeon was happy. Pre op is to make your liver small enough to do the proceedure so it is not in the way.

You can also practice eating slower and smaller bites. That was and is very hard for me. You cannot take more than one small bite in a minute or 1.5 minutes. It is a very difficult change to adapt to.

Otherwise, I am excited for you!

The week before I started my 2 week "liver shrinking" diet I started replacing lunch with a Protein Shake. I feel that it has really helped me prepare for going to full liquids next week.

Try to find a Protein shake you like now...it may take you a few before you find the one that you like.

I like jililian Micheals from Walmart. Also enjoy the New whey...they are like kool-aid...i mix them with crystal lights.

I also found that I enjoy mixing the Protein powers with SF syrups...I never even know its in there.

Heres my favorite to get you started.

1oz Carmel SF Syrup

1oz vanilla SF syrup

3oz Favorite coffee (mine is keurig's butter toffee)

3oz Almond Milk

1 scoop vanilla protein power

Blenderize with lots of ice

130calories/16protein/6carbs

I have a Stock My Pantry list. If you would like for me to email it to you just inbox me your email address.

Oh I also liked unjurys chicken broth. It was pretty good and helped get the protein in those first few weeks.

I agree about removing unhealthy foods from your home. If they aren't there you can't eat them. I drank diet soda right up to surgery and haven't had any problems giving it up after surgery. Start making good food habits buy shopping the outer edge of the grocery store; that tends to be where the healthiest food is kept.

One of the best advices I got pre-surgery was to buy smaller plates and utensils and start using them. They force you to reduce your portion sizes and the amount of food in each bite. I was able to get used to eating slower and I think that helped me get ready for the post-op way of eating. Other things I did was cut out carbonated beverages and coffee about 2 months before surgery and I stopped drinking with my meals as well. Good luck to you as you begin this journey.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
