61 And Just Beginning

Hi Bjc' date='

I am 58 and today is my one month bandaversary. I too wish I had done this much sooner.

I have found my self raising my 6 year old grandson and knew I had to do something to keep up with him and still be around until he gets out of high school.

I started my process last August and had my surgery April 25th.

Good luck to you and all of us seniors.[/quote']

Grandma3, congratulations on your one month bandaversary. These months ahead should be exciting to you. I wish you great success. At 58, you're still young.

I was banded when i was 56 yrs old and will be 58 yrs old in 2 weeks time .. I had tons of weight to lose .. I love cycling and either i am on my exercise bike or on my road bike, in all i cycle around 24 miles a day ..

I only recently had a lot of excess skin removed which took over 11 hours of surgery 8 days ago and my recovery was better than some of the more younger patients in the ward..

i wish i had done this sooner but its never too late to do it either

good luck and show some of the younger ones how its done !!

I am 64, banded in Oct. I read all the percentages for expected weight loss too. I figure this is soooo much better than where I was last year at this time, I am obviously a winner.

I try not to obsess about the # I want to get to, I am trying to enjoy each day. this new life is so much more than I would have thought it could be! I work in the garden, exercise (a lot!),& walk (6/7 miles now). my blood pressure is good, cholesterol is better, no more aches and pains.

I am hoping to enjoy playing with the grandkids, instead of watching from afar!!

Good luck to you as you start this process!

Thank you Bjc1227, I walk about 2-3 miles in the am depending on the weather. I have found, now, in Central Florida, if I am not thru with my walk by 9:15, it is just too hot. I have a treadmill, but find it difficult to stay on it for more than 30 mins at a time. But, the doctors say at least 10 mins 3x a day is good for seniors like us! Any little bit helps! Karen

I was banded 2 yrs ago today at 60 yrs old. I couldn't stand or walk more than 5-10 minutes because of back and knee pain. I've lost 72 lbs, would like to lose another 30-40 in the next year. I can walk 2 miles, go up and down stairs and enjoy cooking again, since I can tolerate standing and prepping. My Meds are reduced...I just had a stress EKG and my heart is healthy! For the first time in my adult life, I maintained weight loss without dieting for a year, and even though I'm the same weight, my clothes are looser than last year and I lost another half inch from my waist. I was a 26/4X pre-op and am 16/18 pants, 18/1X tops...it's worth it.

I used to be fairly active and want to get back to that when I'm able. I'll be 62 in December' date=' with 100 lbs. to lose. Being height challenged (5 ft.), it's a lot.

My surgeon, at the informational meeting said he had few patients in the 60 and over range. He was saying that the rate of success was lower as you age. I am determined.[/quote']

Determined--that's the determining factor! IMO

I bought Jean's Bandwagon book to help with my eating habits, measured and weighed all my food, drank my Water, and chewed 'till my food was mushy...immediate post op Snacks were yogurt (Dannon lite and fit), cottage cheese, sf pudding, tuna or egg salad, poached eggs...I ate 5-6 small meals a day and kept focused on 60 gr Protein and about 100 gr carbs. I logged every bite on sparkpeople.com.

I can eat about a cup of food now, I still eat Protein first, then veggies, then starch if there's room. I don't count calories and eat whatever I want with few limitations.

Bonnie - I hope that your approval is moving right along and soon you will have a surgery date. I am 60 1/2 and had my band 7/7/11. I have lost 98 pounds and I feel fantastic. My doc says that older patients follow the rules better and are often more successful. In our case, we are really doing it for health reason and not because we would look hot in a new swim suit. Walk, follow the directions of your doctor and best of luck. Stay in touch on this site - it is grat support and answers questions either your doctor won't answer or you forget to ask.

Take care and enjoy the ride..

Hey B-52 my husband has a Harley and I can't wait until I get down some so I can go ride with him. :) I'm still in the investigating stage as it looks like we are going to have to pay for this ourselves. Since we are retired I have to be careful of costs. I still figure if this is what God wants for me to do then everything will work out.

To all: Keep up the good work. You are inspirations!

Deb

Thank you Melinda. My goal is to be healthy. I'd like not to be embarrassed in a bathing suit but at 61, hot is for dreamers. Lol. Thankfully, I am realistic.

Bonnie - you crack me up - glad you weren't expecting a hot chick to pop out of this band thing. I will share this. I work at a large State University and today, I am wearing a skort (size 12 proudly said) and it is kind of short. Well, I have received compliments all days about my legs and how skinny I am getting. WOO HOO..skinny and my name in the same sentence - wow, I thought that ship had sailed but I guess not. So I may be too old to hot in in swim suit, but apparently I can still wear a short skirt ! I loved the 60's and min skirts ! hehehehe

Have a great weekend.

Hello Folks, today is my 64th birthday! I can't say that I am the happiest I have eve been, but I am content. I am not the smallest I have ever been as an adult, but I am good with my size and weight. I can wear minis if I so choose, mostly my skorts and culottes are above my knees, but my dresses are at knee length. If I wear longer dresses, I feel "frumpy". I have lost 100 lbs and have maintained for about 1 year. I had surgery on Oct 30, 2009. I chose lapband because I was the fattest lady I knew! I have since referred 3 others to my lapband surgeon! Good luck to all and best wishes for our futures! Karen

Yeah Karen,

You are doing awesome and your story is an inspiration to use older banders.

I think maintaining is a big part of the success, hope I do as well as you!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
