I was banded on January 30th. I have lost close to 40 lbs and was feeling great ... Until Monday. I started feeling very bloated and hadn't had a bm since last Saturday. Monday night I got the chills and muscle aches and thought I caught the flu. Long story short, the pains increased and I was sweating profusely. I called my surgeon and met with him this morning. He ordered an emergency cat scan and they found air bubbles in my chest cavity. Do not pass go, do not collect 200.00. Go directly to hospital room. Here I am in my hospital bed awaiting surgery for tomorrow morning where according to my surgeon the band will most likely be removed. Needless to say, I am bummed. I will post follow ups tomorrow.

Why does air bubbles cause the band to have to be removed? Never heard of this so I'm curious.

Hi everyone. Thanks for all the well wishes and support. On Friday morning I was taken Into surgey and spent the whole day trying to get info on what happened in the or. All I was told was the band was removed. No other conversations took place. On Saturday my surgeon rushed through my room and said that I was a part of the 1 percent that the band doesn't work on. What does that exactly mean? Were my stomach walls too soft or was the band defetivce upon placement. I can only presume from the run around I am getting is that the one percent they speak of are surgeons screw ups.

Wow, incredible. Just glad you are here to share your story, with or without the band. Did the doc say you could possibly have another put in?

I do not understand air in the cardiac chamber when the diaphragm separates that area I would really check into how the band allowed air to get somewhere that the band was not suppose to be??? Look up anatomy the two chambers do not connect? B

You are right Jen. I want many more answers and also have many more questions.

Twi, the air got there because the band eroded through my stomach wall creating a hole.

Questions I have asked and were just not answered or waved off were,

is my stomach wall that weak that the band could create a hole in in in such a short time. Or

Was the band defective and caused the erosion.

The answers I was given was that I am a part of the 1 percent that have failures.. to me it is way too short of a time for a band to erode my stomach wall unless something was done wrong during the surgery. I'm having a hard time dealing with this .

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
