1000 Calories, Gym 5 Days A Week..no Weight Loss!

Recommended Posts

I sure could use some advice from you old pro's. I was banded in 2008, never did well on the diet or lost much weight. Since January of this year (late bloomer I guess) have decided to finally kick myself into gear. I went to the doctor and now have 4 cc in my band after removing 2 cc due to overfilled complications. I have been logging all of my food on MFP, eating 1000 calories a day (per my doc's order) and have been at the gym for an hour 5-6 days a week. (Mostly eliptical and couch to 5K on the treadmill) ABSOLUTELY NO WEIGHT LOSS. I have yo-yo'd 4-5 pounds up and down but I cannot explain why it keeps coming back! I am not changing a thing to make it go and come back..I would appreciate any advice you can give. I am despirate to meet my goal of losing 80 pounds this year. Thanks

How intense is your work out. For example what level are you doing on the elliptical? I am slow loser. I stay at 1000-1200 cal and do an hour of rigorous cardio 7 days a week.

I set the machine on the weight loss program so it will give me the intervals. Its usually at a resistance of 10 and an incline of 8 for the "hard interval" and its 4 and 4 on the "easy interval"

Are you also keeping track of your inches? With that much exercising, and not eating enough calories your body could be in starvation mode, OR you are gaining muscle and losing fat, you just dont see it on the scale. Check with your doctor, or nutritionist. Dont worry you will get it all figured out. Good LUCK!!

I would get in some strength training. Some of us if we do the same exercise daily just end up on a plateau. U said yourseld u havent changed a thing.. theres the clue... small changes can make all the difference.I do exercise bike and road bike, weights and dumbells and a 1000 calories a day, my body seems to think its maintenance time lol couple of weeks ago i had flu, didnt feel like exercising so i didnt. I did rigorous housework, cleaning floors paintowrk etc, boom that week 4lbs gone ... make some changes but make them small. Try higher Protein, or lower the carbs u eat, anything small to shock your body into doing something !

When I first started exercising, I had no weight loss either and was starting to get frustrated. Luckily my trainer was keeping track of my measurements. I was losing inches, but not pounds, and it took a few weeks for my body to catch up. Now my weight loss is slow and steady, and yours will be too. I would recommend eating a little bit more though if you are exercising so frequently. An hour on the elliptical burns around 500 calories, so make sure you have enough fuel in your tank to keep your metabolism burning. Good luck and keep it up...the results will come!

I believe now that you have to eat to lose. With working out that much and only 1000 calories, your body needs more fuel.

Sorry, but she is most definitely NOT gaining muscle with only eating 1000 calories, and especially only doing cardio.

I think the secret is to not do the same thing all the time. Switch up the food types and amounts and vary exercise program. Our bodies get used to what they expect to happen. Switch it up and hopefully that will put you into another gear!

Add variety to what you do, this is very important. For exercise to be effective at improving your fitness or helping you to lose weight, it must be progressive... get slightly more challenging or different each time you do it.

Strength training is very important. The more muscle you have the faster your metabolic rate will be.

Finally, if the rest of your life is quite sedentary, you will struggle to lose weight. You need to get more active ALL the time. I've found that regular walking combined with resistance training is one of the fastest ways to lose large amounts of body fat.

But walking in chunks throughout the day and not simply sauntering, be in a rush to get somewhere.

I hear what u r saying about counting calories but it just dose not compute? Are you measureing or weighing your food intake 4 oz at a time? I ve been banded since 2009 also but I have never had a conversation with my dr about calories he only wants to know how much I am eating at a meal and how long after a meal am I hungry again.................

If you are not eating enough, your metabolism will go down! Get 1200 in a day, even more if you are exercising right! When I restrict my diet too much, I plateau, no matter how much exercise I do. When I eat enough to keep me fueled all day, then I lose. It's almost like your body knows it is going to eat every few hours so it doesn't hold on the the stored fat like it will never get fed again. Just make sure the calories are good ones like high Protein, no sliders. Good luck to us all!!

I am so thankful to each and every one of you who has taken time to give me advice. I will be adding strength training and increasing my calories a little bit. No I have not measured anything except my waist (which I hate) LOL, but I will. I just need to get this scale moving, before I lose my mind! I understand that muscle weighs more than fat...but I'm a fat girl who JUST WANTS TO SEE THAT SCALE GO DOWN! Yes I have a band, however this battle is not won with that. Its a mind change, there's no band for that! My band does not help me to feel fuller, when it was tighter I had reflux and got stuck often, even was on asthma meds for the wheezing when the whole time it was my overtightened band. Now I can eat anything I want, but its all in my decisions that will help me lose this weight. Kinda sad I had a surgery for nothing :(

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
