New Bandster Can't Eat Hardly Anything! What Can I Do?

Recommended Posts

I had the lap band surgery November 21, 2011. I did great the first 3 days, but day 4 I vomitted most of the day after trying to eating oatmeal with milk. Day 5 was ok for the most part and then I started vomitting after eating 3 spoonfuls of cottage cheese. Looks as though I am lactose intolerant. After that, I couldnt even take the the Protein powder mixed with Water. I survived the weekend, but everyone told me that I looked like i had the flu.

I called the Dr. on Monday and told them all the the problems that i had had, and they reccomended an alternative protein with the consistantcy of Kool-aid. I got some and can keep it down. The only other thing i have been able to eat well is cream of wheat. (it makes me really gassy after 3 meals of it)

Another thing I have noticed is that if I follow the guidelines I was given; drinking 4-6 oz of liquid every hour and eating my 3 pkg's of cream of wheat at 9, 12, & 3, by 5pm - I can not eat anything else. I can get alittle more liquid down, but anything else makes me nauseated

I am worried that I am not getting enough nurition. And to tell the truth, I have become very anxious over all this. Can someone please give me some suggestions?

Thanks for any advise anyone can give me.

Mel Green

I was on liquids for two weeks. Maybe you have a lot of swelling from surgery and just née to try to stick with Protein Shakes and liquified Soups with added Protein Powder in them. Also, you can call your doctor and ask for anti nausea medication. I didn't have a problem with nausea but lots of people do. Good luck!

Ask your doctor if they left any liquid in the band. I've seen many people write in with similar issues and it turns out they have liquid in their band. If so get it out and you should do much better.

If your Dr. said to be on Liquids. then you should stay on them so the swelling goes down.

If you don't do it, your swelling won't go down, and you will have a problem.

So stay on fluids, and then you will get to musies.

Now I am not a doctor, or even an expert. But, it seems like you are forcing your band and your stomach to eat too soon. Most of us are on Clear Liquids for a week after surgery, then full liquids. Cottage cheese and oatmeal are not liquids! I don't remember well, because I had surgery over 2 years ago. But, my son had surgery in August, the surgeon's assistant told him that cottage cheese shouldn't even be eaten at mushy stage. Calm down, follow your surgeon's guide lines to a T and you should be okay! Karen

You should still be on clear liquids at this point not mushy food. I would try liquids and see if that doesnt help with the swelling

I was on clear liquids for 2 days then full liquids for 2 weeks I just went on mushies there is no way I could of eaten cream of wheat or anything else like that after surgery. Usually you get about 300 calories a day for the first 2 weeks or so I had alot of broth, sugar free popsicles, Carnation instant Breakfast sugar free of course and Decaf hot tea I was banded on Nov 8th and down 25lbs. If I were you I would go to full liquids for a couple weeks see how your doing then slowly go to mushies. Good Luck

Honk's right.... I would call and see of there's Fluid in your band. I had so much post op swelling I couldn't even swallow my own spit. Called my doctor and he said "sounds like your fluid needs to come out." I didn't even know there was any in there. Once he took it out I could drink a glass of what're. But still... You should probably still be in full liquids right now. You need to rake it slow and give your stomach time to heal. Best of luck to you!

Great Info Everyone! I feel much better now. Everythng I read about the surgery said liquids for 2 to 3 weeks. I was quiet suprised/confused when my doctors booklet had me eating mushies the first week. Thanks for confirming what I thought all along. :)

Well I'm not a doctor but I had my surgery on 11-17-11 and today(11-30-11) is the first day that I began mushy food like oatmeal, cream of wheat and cottage cheese and creamy Soups. For the first two weeks I only had Protein shakes and I used the Adkins that I purchased write from any super market, along with broth, yogurt, Jello and Jello pudding or apple sauce. Now today I still have to drink two Protein Shakes a day but i can have mushies three times a day.

So far I have been sticking to the plan and no vomiting or upset stomach so I'm happy for that. I admit I'm so sick of these shakes I don't know what to do but I also know it's important for me to heal. I do admit that since I did miss Thanksgiving I did have some green bean casserole and dressing but not much and bot were very mushy.....lol.

Don't know if this may help but it just sounds like you need to take it easy and may need to stick to the liquids.

Best of luck and hope you will be feeling better soon.

hi had my surgery nov 17th.was told no eating at all 1st 2 weeks. I was also told nothing was in my band. I have alot of swelling. What I had alot was burning inside my stomach when ever a drink went in. Mydoctor said no one ever said that to him. He did say eating and healing is stages. Do one for 2 weeks when you move to stage 2 and nothing happens stay there for awhile then go to stage 3 if at anytime you have a problem go back to last stage you did well at. I worry about my blood count.I am having my doctor take it Friday. I did eat 2 spoons of Peanut Butter very slow. I hate shakes and its doesnt taste right now so I am still at stage one. Burning is almost all gone. I choked once but didnt get sick but was very scared. eat food when ready like a new born baby very small bites and slow very slow. Good luck. lynn

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
