I was banded September 7th, 2011. I've so far lost 9 pounds since surgery. I didn't lose any weight prior to surgery, I had last-meal syndrome and ate like no tomorrow. Lol. Not a good idea, everyone should really go on liquids 1--2 weeks prior, it really helps your mind set for surgery. Day of surgery was pretty intense, I had a lot of gas pain the first 2 days. I'm fine now. I'm a little bit wild, running around, all over the place, so I'm nervous I could be hurting my band and healing process, but I have no issue so far. I just can't wait to heal!

Good luck to you all!

Yeah, I have been doing a 'pre-op' diet the dr gave me. It was 2 Protein Shakes a day and one 300 cal meal and as much veggies as I wanted. This clear liquid part is not fun, I guess after a couple bowls of broth the thought of it for a week post-op is grossing me out, lol. That is awesome weight loss! I have lost 16 pounds since I started the pre-op diet I just need to keep my eye on the prize :) I bet you will be so glad when you are finally all healed. I told my mom I want to just fast forward about 6 weeks :)

Hi all, I am getting banded on Monday and was so excited till today when I had to start the clear liquid diet. Now I am so nervous if I can do this! Just getting nervous...... Those who have been banded already please tell me I will survive the first week, lol. I am not even nervous about the surgery part of it just the recovery eating part. Just doing the liquid diet so far today I feel like I am starving myself :)

You can do it. I am in San Diego as well and my day is this Friday. I have been on liquids for 1 week already and although it is tough sometimes, just keep your goal in mind and you will succeed. Let us know how you are doing until and after the surgery.

Where are you having you surgery?

I have had so many signs that I am doing the right thing with this banding that it all seems to just be falling into place. I have felt so bad, for so long and I feel tlike the help I will get from the banding is a blessing I resisted for too long. Because I am retired at 60 and can't get insurance for health issues, we have had to finance this ourselves. I sort of came into this thru the back door. I began having cardiac issues and the cardiologist is the one who recommended I look into this, so I already had all the preliminary work ups done to rule out other causes. Took a little while to get into the bariatric center, but I met all the criteria immediately so we are good to go. By not having to deal with insurance it has been a smooth ride so far.

The worst part was getting over the failure of not being able to lose the weight or keep it off myself. I am a nurse and know HOW to do it but my addiction is food and I just can't get a handle on it. Once Dr. assured me I would NEVER be able to get more than 50 lbs off by myself and it would probably not stay off, I felt less like a failure. Fact is, the heart problems are gonna kill me if I don't do something about it and I have a lot of stuff I still want to do in life. I'm excited but trying to just take each day as it comes. Today I went shopping for all my supplies, the chewable vitamins and Calcium supplements, liquid pain meds, low fat/low cal liquid and pureed options. Read lots and lots of labels. My nursing has helped a lot with that.

I've read my pamphlets over and over, I've researched on the internet, I've lined up a couple of online support groups to keep in touch with, and I've asked God to be with me thru this. We even snowbird down south and I've lined up a doctor down there who will follow me for fills while we are down there and my doc here agreed and just wants me to check back in when I get back. I have good friend from church who is ending her first year and she looks and feels great and will be a great support to me as well. I am so truly blessed.

I know my demons will be eating and drinking SLOW enough, and chewing thoroughly. If I don't feel hungry I can avoid the food aspect. I've slowly said goodby to all my favorites getting ready for this, the last Taco Bell, the last great pizza, the last Bob Evans Breakfast. I've been eating pretty healthy since all this began, and started taking 1/2 of my portions home or eating only 1/2 size portions and trying to avoid most of my beloved weaknesses. Tuesday the 13th I meet for my pre-op appt and see the dietician and probably start on the Protein diet then. Surgery is Sept 29. Stay in touch, everyone and God Bless.

I am having mine at Alvarado Hospital. My pre-op is tomorrow, so I will keep you in my thoughts. Let us know how you are doing. Also, if you are not aware, Alvarado has a support group one Wednesday night per month and it is open to all band patients. If you want specifics, let me know.

Good luck!

Hi !!! New here, just recently banded on the 7th. I am having trouble with taking in 4 oz of Clear Liquids per hour. I have a continuous feeling that I just ate Thanksgivning dinner

for 3 people. I am uncomfortably full. The only time I am comfortable is if I am lying nearly flat in the bed. I cannot get down the Protein Shakes they are just too thick and give me immediate pain of being overfull. Is anyone else having this issue? Is it normal? Is there anything I can do? I've been walking laps around my house thinking it is just left over gas in my abd from the surgery. I use Gas Ex strips 2-3 times a day hoping to alleviate any air in the stomach. I cannot burp. At times I feel like I have to burp, but then nothing comes up and I get a sharp pain.

Any help appreciated.

Sorry you are having so much discomfort! I hope its better. I have seen several people post that they are using the gas ex strips to help with the post op gas pain. I just wanted to let everyone know these will not help with that particular kind of pain. Gas ex works INSIDE the stomach and GI tract. The post op gas pain is the gas used to inflate the abdomin and all that gas is OUTSIDE the GI tract. The strips will help with the belching etc type pain. Only walking and time can help with the post op gas pain. Just wanted to make sure everyone knew that! Hope you get to feeling better!

Mmmm, regardless, the GasX strips have definitely helped me. Mostly, I was taking them when I could either feel a burp that felt "stuck", or there was some intestinal gurgling going on but nothing coming out.

HI. Im not sure but this may be my first post. After 10 months of seminar, evaluaions, dr and dietician visits, psych exams, and extensive testing, I am scheduled for my surgery in 2 days: September 13, 2011. My youngest daughter had the surgery approximately 2 1/2 weeks ago, so I had a unique opportunity to watch and learn from a band patient. I am truly excited. I had a very unusual insurance experience, but the bottom line is that I was approved for the surgery after my first request.

Good luck to everyone!

I tried to put in a ticker but frankly I'm not sure it worked. If not, well, guess I will have to figure out how to fix it!

Peace to you.

Donna

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
