I was really expecting to be on a Protein diet for at least a week or two....when I asked my doctor he told me it was not necessary? I asked around this forum and a lot of people are not required to diet. Go figure... I bought a chocolate and vanilla shake that was suggested here for afterwards...hoping my doctor doesn't a yucky tasting one :)

Also, I was just given my surgery date on Friday the 12th for Tuesday surgery...

Good luck and let's keep each other posted... And help one another through this life changing journey.

Good luck on Tuesday! Did your doctor put you on a pre-op protein diet? I am supposed to do this for 3 days prior to surgery. It has been hard because I am allowed to eat 1 meal a day, then the 2 other meals need to be Protein Powder mixed with Jello or pudding. Yuck!

Thank you healthywoman : ) We will all keep each other posted...Blessings.

Good afternoon to all. Kristenaz and Flammingjun we are all being banded this week- I'm on the 18th at 9am! I am so excited to get past this point and on to the hard work ahead. I'll pray for us bandsters this week.

Jonmon have you tried writing a journal about your expeience? It might be helpful to see all the accomplishments you make on this journey. It's a huge success for you to acknowledge that your eating habits are a problem, research options to support your decision to do something about it, and then make a choice and follow through!! You are just days away from your procedure date so you have already jumped through tons of hoops to get to this point. Changing your point of view about life after banding might make thins go more smoothly for you in social situations. You will still be eating, mostly the same things as the rest, but possibly making healthier choices than your friends. You might be eating slower than they do, but again, it's healthier for you that way. I don't mean to "preach" , just maybe giving you some options about the choices we make in everything we do including how we feel.

Cara and Caryn, how are things feeling several days out? Is there anything that we can do for the gas pain? Is this gas from the surgery where they blow up your abdomen to get a better view, or is it gas in the intestine that going to make us toot???? Is the heating pad making any difference for you? What type of pain are you talking about with the port? sorry for all the questions, just feeling a bit anxious I guess. Just four more days for me! HW

Tomorrow is my big day and I'm so excited. Everyone keeps asking me if I'm a nervous wreck, so that makes me second guess myself and what I'm feeling. Today is the start of the full liquid diet until 8/27 (surgeon does 1 day of liquids before and 10 days post-op). So far, it's okay. I caught myself putting a grape in my mouth while making lunch for the kids and spit it out.

I do have to say I have had inclings of thoughts about whether lap-band was the right choice, but I'm not going to allow myself to go there. This is the start of a whole new journey and I'm excited about the possibilities.

Good luck, everyone!

Hello all, I can't wait to hear from todays bandsters-hope all went well. I went for my pre-op visit and lost 8 lbs since consult appt. Still have three days of liquid, then surgery on Thurs. My doc requires two more weeks of liquids post -op. Should be losing like crazy! Sat in a room with several bandsters and heard lots of stories- pain levels, healing times, vomiting stories, and just before I went in to my visit, these two ladies were pulling up their shirts to show me the scars!!! Too funny! I don't believe I'll be one of those type to whip up my shirt at a support group meeting. I'm counting days and really understanding that there is no turning back now. However. I'm not changing my mind. I've had 35 years of the same yo-yo experience and don't expect that it would change. Thank god for lapband. Anxiously awaiting word from this weeks bandsters. HW

Hey all fellow August Bandsters. I was banded yesterday and everything went very good rolleyes.gif I also had a bit of trouble sleeping the couple night right up to the big day. And I felt like I had butterflies in my stomach the whole (2 hr) drive to the clinic and right up till they knocked me out. I was terrified of waking up without the band. I did ok on the pre-op diet but not as good as I should have, so I was really nervious about that. It was the first thing I asked when I woke up. I was in recovery at the clinic for 3 hours after the procedure. I wasn't in very much pain at all (2 out of 10), no nausea (but they gave me gravel before even asking, so that probably helped). Mostly my throat was sore from the tube. And my arm was swollen, bruised and sore from where they injected me with something (I think it was hapranin and antibiotic). Everything is getting better today tho. I bit of, not pain...but more like irritation in my left shoulder (the results from the gas), this is when I know I need to take more pain meds. The port incision bothers me the most, but really not that bad. I have not been hungry at all, just thirsty. Basically after having my appendix out with open surgery, this has been a breeze.

I was 3 of 3 people having surgery yesterday tho and I'll give you a bit of an update from what I saw. One lady ended up having to stay the night, not sure why, but she did. The other lady was not looking very good when I saw here, puked up some Water after surgery, was having nausea issues I guess and also issues voiding. They would not let her leave before she voided. I was 20 mins shy of being the last into surgery and the first discharged. Although I was the youngest of us three, so I'm sure that also helped.

I wish everyone well on their up coming surgeries rolleyes.gif

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
