October 2010 Bandsters!!

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!

My surgery today was a breeze! Arrived at the hospital at 7:30am, walked into the operating theatre, and jumped up onto the table at around 8:30am, and woke up in recovery a little before 10:00am I was convinced that I had dropped off to sleep, while waiting, it seemed that quick, and I had no pain whatsoever! Had a few sips of Water, over the next couple of hours, and dozed on and off, then I was moved to a recliner chair. I went to the bathroom, without any assistance, and then got dressed without any help at all, and was on my way home at around 2:00pm. I picked up the pain and anti nausea meds from the pharmacy on the way home, then tucked myself into bed for a nice comfy nap! My partner kept waking me up to see if I was alright, but being so sleepy, I was able to drop off again easily. I got up at around 6:00pm and sipped some diet soft drink...not too fizzy, but found it a bit difficult, and had to take a good rest in between sips. Then I gave up, and decided to have a black coffee....I haven't had a coffee for 3 weeks!!! It went down very easily I can tell you! It is now around 8:30pm, I'm still up, and still have no pain, so they must have pumped me up with drugs while I was under. The lovely caring nursing staff kept asking me if I had pain, and seemed really surprised when I kept telling them that I had none at all. I am touching wood, as I write this, as tomorrow might be a diffrerent story. But it is so good to be at home, rather than in a hospital bed. I am not feeling any hunger at all, a bit thirsty, but water is on hand at all times. So happy to have the surgery behind me, hopefully the all liquid stage won't be too difficult. At least I do like the coffee flavoured Optifast, and I've stocked up on some yummy Soups etc. Anyhow, good luck to everyone still facing up for your surgery, and I hope you have a great experience as well.... :wink2:

Thank you, Lynne for checking on me. Yes, Monday was my day! Everything went well. I couldn't have asked for better care. Needless to say, I slept all day Monday after the surgery. Yesterday I was up and moving (slowly). The pain was pretty bad. It was better this morning but is trying to act up again. I'm tired of the backside of this journey. I am ready to feel good!!! Maybe tomorrow.

How are you feeling? What are you eating? I would appreciate any suggestions.

Well, I better go walk a little bit and see what's for lunch. I think I need someone to tell me to "Eat this today". I get confused. But I know that this too shall pass.

Blessings, Pat

It's so good to hear from you I was getting a little worried. Glad to hear everything went well for you. how are you feeling today? I know what you mean about the backside I am so done with the pain and feeling down. I feel bad posting anything but good news but maybe there are others out there that aren't finding this as easy as others. Did you have a hernia repair done with your banding? I did and I'm wondering if that's why this is harder than I expected. My discomfort is getting manageable (day 10) and yesterday I went without Tylenol all day so that's an improvement. Some nights I sleep ok others not so much, I should have bought a recliner. My nutritionist gave me a day by day food plan which is helpful and seems to be dead-on. Do you have a fax # I could send you a copy of what I have. In Phase1 which she says is typically 1 day to 2 weeks after surgery she recommends: high Protein liquid supplements such as Ensure, Boost, or Carnation Breakfast anytime, clear or cream Soups with no noodles or chunks (strain or blend), yogurt, pudding made with skim milk, 1% or skim milk, Jello, fruit juice or pureed soft fruit like applesauce. Next post I'll give you Phase 2. I'm so glad I found your post today I was feeling really down and just connecting helps. I hope I haven't scared anyone and I truly look forward to posting good news again, soon I hope. Take care my friend we will get through this. Lynne:unsure:

Good luck :wink2:)

Ok i have some questions... probably more of a complaint really... lol

I'm on the Bariatric Advantage shakes, 6 a day with broth, sf Jello, sf popsicles, allowed. My head is freaking killing me. My eyes hurt too. Is this normal? Also my mind is playing tricks on me. Trying to convince me I dont really need/want this surgery. Making me crave salty fatty things that I dont even eat... I feel like I'm going crazy... This is day two. Yesterday i only drank 5 shakes. I couldn't choke down another. Is it going to get better? Does this headache go away soon? I know I'm not going to die but I'm sure not feeling very strong right now, mentally that is. Band date is oct. 28th. Did anyone else start getting a little cold feet?

Girl... you are so close!!! I did get cold feet too but I kept looking at that SKINNY dress that has been hanging in my closet for so so long calling me. It's super tough to get all those Protein Shakes down and I just couldnt get in as many as I was supposed to. My doctor said If I was feeling really terrible that I could have a little non-fat yogurt and it helped loads. Try calling your doctor to see what they will approve for you. AND KEEP THAT SKINNY PICTURE OF YOURSELF IN MIND!!!

Good luck to you

Hello Amazed1...I certainly hope it all goes well for you too! Today, I'm a little tired, as I didn't sleep well last night, no real reason, I wasn't uncomfortable as such, probably too much sleep all day! Just finished an Optifast shake, took ages to drink it all down, feeling a bit too full now, otherwise feeling pretty good, although I have taken some pain meds, figured I would get in first!:w00t:

Thanks lzj21428...still feeling really good, a little bit tired, and I've taken some pain meds, before any real discomfort starts, so I'm on top of it. No point in being a martyr! Trying to ignore the mess that my partner has left the house in...his idea of tidy is a long way from mine! I'll just do a quick tidy up and then have a little rest in the lovely spring sunshine! :-)

Greetings, my surgery date is Monday 10/25/2010. I am not nervous or excited, just glad the day is getting closer. I started my liquid diet today and all I got to say is I thought I pee alot at night, but now I can add the day time as well. Good luck to all.

just made it thru day 3 of liquids. I hope I can do this for 7 more days. Had a horrible headache last night-clled the nurse this morning and she said to try caffiene which I did and yes, it got rid of the headache! So sick of Carnation Instant Breakfast though. Tried broth and it was NOT good. Finally told my sister today and it went ok so that is a relief!

Wow PuppyBandit 3 days isn't a long time. Maybe it all depends on the "state" of your liver. My dr told me that 2 weeks is the standard (could be longer if your liver is in bad shape) but never about it being shorter then that. Good luck to you on that.

DonTony: My dr highly recommends his patients to do the Optifast for the 2 wks, glad to know that it isn't bad. Is there two different kinds? I ask because you mentioned doing the light.

I have my upper GI test tomorrow and I'm super nervous...anyone need to get that done also? anyone done it already? Please let me know how it went.

Thanks!!

The upper GI is not bad. I was scared too. I thought they would be putting a tube down my throat for some reason. But no, it's just take a drink, swallow, xray. You even get to watch. It's a breeze. The drink is a bit like unsweetened frosting.

I am 2 weeks and three days post-op. I went to see my surgeon and ending up getting a half-fill because I was just starving all the time! It seems a little bit better now. I don't feel as desperately hungry. By the way, I started a new blog for the bandsters and bandsters to be:

livemylapbandjourney's posterous - This Journey is all mine. I am the captain. Every turn and indecision affects the progress; not toward the end but instead toward the beginning...

Try caffeine for the headache. I had a really bad one day two of my 10 days of liquids b4 surgery-now I am on day 4 and feeling much better. A cup of coffee should take care of the headache and tylenol. I had to call the nurse it was so bad. Hope that helps!

Well, I have 3 more days to go until surgery. Don't know what I'm feeling. A mix of everything. I had my final pre-op appt with the anethesiologist (sp) so everything is good to go. Just wish the family was more supportive. Just hoping to get through Monday without any problems.

Thanks to this board, I was able to get lots of info from reading a lot of posts.

Maybe I'll post Monday and tell you all how it went.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
