I had my surgery yesterday! I was quite nervous - they gave me a valium that morn b/c I asked for it. Def. took the edge off. The IV wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it'd be. Then some happy drugs in the iv, then they rolled me away. I just remember them saying your meds are going in your IV, and it'll hurt a bit. It did, but then I was out like a light. Woke up hurting and they gave me pain meds. My op was at 8:3am, and then I stayed in recovery until 2:3 - condition of leaving was I had to pee. Harder than it sounds! I"ve been okay at home - pain when I breathe deep, and when I stand or sit - staying upright as much as possible has been the best. Taking all my meds - pain and nausea, like clockwork. I haven't been hungry at all - such a pleasant feeling! I've just been chilling today, resting, watching movies, and went for a 5 minute walk around my yard. Been sipping on broth and tea, and sucking on popsicles - throat really hurts from the breathing tube. I've had alot of the shoulder pain, too. Massage does ease it a bit. sleeping in one position all night was hard -flat on my back. Tossed and turned - okay, well, didn't REALLY - but was awake on and off from 2am onwards. So far I'm feeling good about things. This is my new beginning - eyes on the prize!!! Good luck to everyone else!

Hello! I'm on target for May 19th and getting a little nervous. I noticed from reading here that several of you are on a pre-op diet for several days prior. My doc's office only told me to do a liquid diet for the day before surgery. Any ideas why?

Thanks Friends! You'll be hearing a lot from me!

My pre-op instructions were pretty minimal too. I only have to substitute one meal with a Protein Shake one week prior to surgery (which starts today!) and then Clear Liquids two days prior. I was kinda bummed because I wanted to have some pre-op liquid diet success, like a lot of the other bandsters, but I couldn't quite bring myself to do it on my own.

I never got around to asking why my instructions were different, though. I was hoping it had to do with being on the lower end of the BMI scale and maybe not having a fatty enough liver because of it. I just squeaked by at 39.9. What about you?

Also, congrats on your surgery date! It'll be here before you know it!

Right now, I use the "Whey Protein" from Wal-mart. It's good if you mix it with low fat milk. Water makes it horrible! The after taste isn't great, but that's what gum is for! Lol-

Usually, I stay full for 4-5 hours after I drink it.

Congratulations btw!

Well, I can tell you how important the pre-op is on surgery. I lost a total of 32lbs for mine, and when it was all said and done, my Doctor called me at home the night of my surgery may5th and just kept thanking me for making it one of his easiest bandings. He even asked if it was ok to use my pics and surgery for other patients. I said no problem!

Mind you, on the liquid diet I didnt cheat not one time. My wife actually did it with me to kick off a diet for her "Navy Weight" and she lost a total of 16 lbs. So I can tell you it works!

Regarding the preop diet, my dr. has me drinking Protein Shakes two or three times a day or more if needed but I can have a "sensible" meal once a day. I can do this up to the day b-4 the surgery.

Sam's has a good price on the EAS whey powder or you can get the low carb premixed containers. The "high protein" Slim Fast is really good but hard to find. Unjury has a good web site for their products.

I like variety so I keep looking and tasting:tt2:

I am 6 days away!!!!

I cant find the slim fast high Protein low carb anywhere anymore! I google it and realized there was a recall on it, but I have heard some people are using it still. I liked the slim fast, and they were easy to bring around!

I know how you feel, but you will do fine. I had my surgery this morning, and am home and doing fine. Pain is not bad, but the pressure from the gas is the worst, but still not unbearable. Take a deep breath and trust in your decision and in your surgeon.

I started my pre-op diet on Monday the 3rd and will have my surgery on Monday the 17th.

I really can't believe how easy this pre-op diet is so far, I was dreading it so bad. Yeah, I want some pizza but I'm not going crazy with cravings. I've lost five pounds since Monday and am feeling great.

Good luck to everyone on their surgeries!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
