Any May 2010 Bandsters?

Recommended Posts

I got my approval and surgery date - May 6th. I start my liquid only diet on the 22nd of this month. I'm worried about that some. Right now though I'm eating every meal like it was my last!:bored:

Mine is set for May 12th. I too am worried about the pre-op diet. I will be at work for only 3 days of the diet so that is good for my co-workers. I think they are afraid of how mean and cranky I may be. :bored:

I plan on eating every thing that I love that I either won't be able to have anymore or won't have for a long time. The KEY is not pigging out on it. I promised myself that I will have my last meals but in moderation. If I gain any weight they may cancel my surgery. I will lose some on the pre-op diet but if I gain a bunch then I might be in trouble.

I too am having mine in May on the 4th. I am nervous about the pre op also. I have gained a few pounds since my 6 mth ck up before approval, so I am hoping that it is OK. have been really watching what I am eating and drinking lots of Water. Haven't had a soda in over 8 weeks, so not sure why. I would love to have some people to compare notes and support each other!!

All of you get banded before me so I am hanging on your experiences. The 12th will be here soon enough. I start my mandatory pre-op on May 5th. It is suggested I start a high Protein low carb diet or three Protein shakes with one high Protein low carb meal another week or two prior to that.

I gave up soft drinks too. I am hooked on Vitamin Water Zero. I HATE plain Water, makes me gag. I am paying close attention to the protein in a meal. It's hard and still keep it low carb.

Hi!!!!!!!!

My insurance has been approved and I'm super nervous, excited, hopeful. All the things I'm sure most people go through before they make a major life change. My surery date is set - May 7th!!

I told my family about my decision to be banded - I was worried I'd have to really defend my position - but I didn't. They asked thoughtful questions, and I answered them the best I could.

I've had my psych visit (super easy), my nutritionist visit (interesting!) and met with my surgeon's resident. After all of that (and xrays for ankle issues, and a sleep study for sleep apnea), my insurance approved my the first time! I was surprised - I really thought they'd either flat out deny it, or it would be a back and forth issue to get there. My BMI has not been over 40 for 2 years - it's flucuated. However - I needn't have worried - it went smoothly. I feel like I've invested alot of money already with all these visits. My out of pocket was estimated at $2400 - that seems quite reasonable to me. Also, I can go on a payment plan (yippee!!).

Sorting out my emotional eating from my eating for hunger has been what I've been concentrating on. I def. eat out of boredom, stress, etc - and I hope, hope, hope I can stop doing this, in order to make the band work.

Right now, I've been eating quite healthfully, as my husband just got diagnosed with diabetes and high cholesterol. It's funny how it's easier to eat healthfully for someone else, but not just for myself. Something to ponder. Yet still - I lose no weight - makes me feel like I'm doing the right thing getting banded.

Is there a May 2010 forum somewhere?? I love this website, but with so many topics and so many forums and people, I feel a bit lost. :) Also - can't figure out how to change my avatar - grrr!! Gotta work on it!

Hello there!

I am a May Bander!

I had a tentative date for May 12th, but it is now May24th  The hospital & my Surgeon's schedule just wasn't matching up, so it needed to be changed...unfortunately!

I feel like I have a marathon of appointments coming up!

My surgeon

Sleep Clinic

Psych

Blood Gases

Exercise & Rehab

Nutrition

And of course I have been going to all of the support group meetings, as many as possible that are available. I have been meeting all kinds of GREAT people at many stages of banding & bypass. They are all so great & helpful!

I am so excited & was soooo disappointed to learn it was scheduled for 12 days later. But at least it's still in May. These next 7 weeks better fly on by!!!

Good luck to all other May banders!

I'm a May 13th Bandster!! I just made all my pre-op doctor appointments today. I'm stuck in tax season hell for 9 more days and then I can really focus on trying to adopt some early healthy habits! I had a surprisingly effortless insurance approval journey, but I still fear that final bill - hopefully no surprises. I'm on a HSA PPO that I've never really utilized before, so we'll see...

I first started coming around here last month and I was so jealous of all the April Bandsters! Now it's our turn, we're up next!!

Hi I haven't got a day yet I'm waiting on my insurance, but I hope I will have a date by the end of this month or the first of May. I'm 35 and 5'7" and I weigh 280lbs. My biggest concern is the band flipping what do your Dr.'s say to you about that?

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
