December Delights 2009

Recommended Posts

Oh dear! At least you were in the right place and are back on the road to recovery. Hope you are feeling ok, look forward to hearing from you :mad2:

I had my surgery on the 9th of Dec. It went pretty good. My liver was bigger because of my obesity. But it was done anyway. I have not had any gas pains, been eating Jello and had some Protein Shake today. Wasn't very tasty. I will have to get some milk and try mixing with it.

I am sore and it is hard to get up and down, but it is just sore not painful. I am surprised!:w00t:

I wish all the ones who have had surgery and the ones who are scheduled the best of luck!

You are so right Austro about the coughing and pain meds. I was banded on Wednesday. On Friday I developed a nasty cough. I finally called the on call surgeon, who happened to be my surgeon, today and he said to take my pain meds that there is codeine in it and this is a cough suppressant. Apparently I had a really bad hital hernia and the work that was done to repair it aggrevated my diapragm(sp?) and it is causing me to cough. Who would have thought the pain meds which I didn't feel like I needed would actually turn out to be my savior?

Just checking-in on y'all.. . Congrats bounser and sarahnoh! I was feeling-up to ANYTHING< let alone posting until a few days after my surgery, so you guys are doing great. I am now on my ninth day post-op and, aside from residual soreness where my port incision is, I feel fine. Right now, I'm trying to get through all those Boost, Special K and other Protein Drinks I had bought for this week (full liquids) in preparation for the next stages (mushies and real food). I've lost 18 pounds to date and am stoked about my decision to do this. I'm still working on sipping/swallowing properly, as I've been a gulper my entire life. And I'm trying to remember to take my Vitamins in the morning (important) and get plenty of fluids down. I'm so busy now at work and preaparing for the holiday, that I'm getting plenty of exercise in. Take care everyone.

Illuminationlady, I know your day is coming.... and my thoughts are with you!

Well I had my surgery on Friday woke up in icu with about 8 doctors around me I guess I didn't do well with my anestelogist they told me my nodules in my lungs were not turning back to oxygen so they had to keep me overnight. Well I got home yesterday around 4 pm and was in alot of pain. I laid down in my bed and went to sleep. woke up with the heaves. I'm doing alittle better today. I have gas and my belly is sore. I have been walking around and it does help. All in All I'm doing ok and happy to be on the other side.

Okay, it's my fifth day post-op, and I'm feeling pretty good! I still haven't been drinking enough fluids. My nausea has mostly resolved...now I'm having trouble distinguishing between nausea and gas, but I think it's mostly gas. I can't really burp, either. My insides are still making LOTS of noises all day, though they've quieted a little bit. Even though I'm taking pain meds about four to five times daily (to prevent pain...I haven't been in much actual pain), I've been able to stay awake all day and only sleep at night. For the past two days I've been able to get out of the house for about three hours at a time without problems. I'm on the lucky side because I've been reading about those of you who have been so tired...I'm so sorry for that! On the other hand, it's making me worry that I'm not experiencing the norm and that the band won't work for me! Oh, me and my worries with no fact behind them. I always say that worrying keeps me on my toes and doing what I need to be doing.

I've been averaging about 300 to 400 calories a day. Typically I've had one Protein Shake throughout the day plus a cup of broth-y Soup (I've been mixing chicken broth with V8 and a scoop of unflavored Protein Powder and microwaving until warm) and a snack-pack of pudding. I have a hard time drinking between, though. I probably could drink more, but I'm afraid of overdoing it.

I just discovered Fage Total 2% Greek yogurt, and it's amazing...I highly recommend looking for it. I found it in a small market called Earth Fare geared more to healthy living (like Whole Foods but not as fancy); I can't recall seeing it at regular stores. I know Trader Joe's and most likely Whole Foods also have it. Anyway, it's 130 calories for a 7oz cup with 17 (!!!!!!) grams of Protein. There is not another yogurt that can compare with the protein content!! I tried it plain and it was good enough, but I did mix in some organic maple Syrup to sweeten it...it raises the caloric content, but my goal is to make it back to eating it plain. I was able to eat half the container before putting it away for later. I think it's a great alternative to the Protein Shakes because I have a hard time with them since they all taste funny to me. I wanted to share that with you in case you hadn't heard about it yet.

I go back to work on Wednesday, which I'm nervous about. My time off is going waaaay too quickly, even though I'm not doing anything! Why is that?! I've lost 25.8 pounds since my pre-op diet started on 11/24, so it's a good motivator. Good luck to everyone getting their shot next.

Today is Day 7 post op for me. Since taking my pain meds like I should, everything has been going great. Today I actually felt hunger when my mother walked past me with a plate of lasagna:drool:. Made me wonder if I could handle something a lil more than Jello and broth like some cream of wheat or a liquified Soup. I will prolly try the soup today. Make it real "soupy" lol.

Glad everyone are doing better!!!!

Yes, my day is coming!!! Wed., the 16th is my day! Three more sleeps and I'll be banded! Can't wait to join all of you.

A tip for the Greek Yogart is to dribble honey on top. Yes, it adds calories but sweetens it up naturally. Try it out. It's delicious!!! Need to go and buy some tomorrow.

Bounser,

That sounds scarry. I'm glad you are home and will be thinking of you over the next couple days. It gets better fast!

Illuminationlady,

Been thinking of you. Good luck. I know you have been very anxious for "your" day!

Teresa (bounser),

So glad you are feeling better! That must have been a scary experience. Here is the crazy thing - we were banded on the same day by the same surgeon :willy_nilly: What time was yours? Mine was scheduled for 8:45 but ended up being around 10:15 if I'm remembering correctly. What if we were right after one another....

Illuminatonlady-you and I are scheduled to be banded on the same day...Wed 16th. I am getting so excited I can hardly stand it. God has truly been helping me with this pre op diet. I only had a week to do just 3-4 carnation instant Breakfast and I have been sticking to it, despite the fact that I have still had to prepare regular meals for my family. I am just so determined to make this work. Just think, as you said....3 more sleeps and we will be banded! YA HOO!!!

Thanks to all for your well wishes and good thoughts. I am very anxious these days and just have 3 sleeps left. Oh! my I've said that already!!! I am dutifully preparing for my surgery and my husband is getting on board now. He is being more and more supportive as the big day draws near.

Has anybody heard anything more about SlimFast? When will they by restocking the shelves. My doc prefers their Meal Replacement shake.< /p>

Hi All,

I am new to the board and have just had my surgery on 12/3. I left the hospital the next morning due to insurance regs...(Medicare! Wow, I didn't believe that they wanted me to stay overnight when the surgeon and nurse said I could go home the same day!). I'm on a 3 week liquid diet 3-4 bottle of Protein Drink a day, Water, Decaf coffee, tea, broths, sugar free ice pops and watered down juices. Everything was fine when I left and all seems well now. I am a little chilly at times during the day, a little sluggush now and then, but overall, feel as if I wished I did this 10 years ago!

I left the hospital 12/4 @ 314 lbs and was 295 this morning...I didn't have to go on liquids before the surgery and only was on a low fat diet the week before to help shrink the liver.

I wish the best of luck to my fellow bandsters and hope that we all stay well! I'll keep updating as I go along and hopefully won't have too many problems!:willy_nilly:

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
