December Delights 2009

Oh dear! At least you were in the right place and are back on the road to recovery. Hope you are feeling ok, look forward to hearing from you

You're exactly right about me being in right place, I was in and out of "la la land" so I didn't really understand where they were wheeling me off to, but my mother and my honey who were in the waiting area hoping to get a thumbs up, were quite upset to hear, "we're moving her to ICU". But, that's all behind me now, and I am looking forward to life in band-land!

Ohmygosh! Do they know why that happened? And you're okay now? You seem alright. Wow... that's frightening (on the one hand, and on the other... I guess you slept through most of the crisis.). I'm really glad you're okay. Hang in there, kiddo!

Late for a meeting...

Nope, not sure why, but yep, I'm OK now. Heck, I thought I was OK when I went in!

Thanks for checking on me and my progress. How are you feeling these days? I wish I could get some energy from somewhere...

If I haven't already said this; Only 6 more sleeps and I'll be a Baby Bandster!!! From what I've read it's important to keep up with the nausea meds and pain meds the first couple of days. Tell me if I'm wrong but I am gathering that just about everyone is nauseated and chasing the pain. I don't like either. I know to walk, walk, walk and sip, sip, sip but now that I've read all about you guys and your nausea, I've learned. Let me know, but I think I have a plan.

Best wishes to those being banded tomorrow!!!

I haven't suffered with any nausea and that's a good thing b/c I hate nothing more than vomit (mine or anyone else's).... but the pain is another story. You will leave the procedure feeling pretty good and not feeling like you really "need" anything for pain, I would suggest that you take your pain meds as scheduled anyway to stay ahead of the pain. You don't want to feel the need to have to take something b/c by then, you are hurting. The object of the game is to stay ahead of the pain, so get your meds and take them as scheduled and as you get a few days post-op you will be able to better gauge when you need them. I am almost to the point where I only need them at night. Almost...

I'm so excited! I was banded 12/4, 6 days ago, and I've lost 8 pounds already! Amazing! I wasn't required to lose any weight before the surgery, so these are my first pounds lost! I have really had such an awesome experience. I was back to work Tuesday, 4 days after being banded (I'm a nurse), and I feel great. I was supposed to stick to a liquid diet for two weeks, but yep I'm a rebel and started solid food after 4 days. I've been able to tolerate it fine. I never had any nausea at all either. I took the pain meds for 3 days, and then just tylenol. And I only had to be on liquids starting 2 days before surgery. I really am sorry for those who have a had a harder time, but I want others to know that it's not always that way.

Initial Consult, Psych Consult,

Nutrition Consult, EKG, labs..............10/16/09

Banded.........................................12/4/09

Starting BMI 40

Staring Height - 5'3"

Starting Weight - 225

Currently - 217 lbs

Juke, That's amazing!!! I never heard of anyone returning to solid foods 4 days after surgery. So glad you had an easy time of it. Nursing is a difficult job too! My doctor told us at the last class that you can rip stiches inside of you if you eat too soon. So be careful!

HappyMe, Thanks for the input. It just seems like a lot of people have had nausea. I hate to vomit also. Pain meds tend to nauseate me. I have both my pain meds and anti-nausea meds filled and ready to to.

I almost feel like I can't wait to just get the surgery part over with and back to life! Oh the waiting....

This may be my new drug of choice -- I am feeling well today and have no discomfort at the band site! I PRAY that it lasts. I was in the ER again yesterday for dehydration. They gave me 2 liters of Fluid and Pepcid and said that they like to give it too all bariatric patients post-op. So, I took one last night and one this morning and this is the best I've felt so far in 9 days. I'm working on a Protein Shake, had a small container of Greek yogurt and feel hungry again. I don't feel dehydrated. PLEASE, I hope this lasts. PLEASE??? :rolleyes2:

Hi all,

Had my 1 week Doc. visit today.

Lost 16 lbs. in 2 weeks had to do the liq. on week before surgery. On Full liq. for 2 more weeks, then soft foods for Christmas. Have no pain but can't burp up the air i get in.

Should have only 4 oz but I can get in 8oz at once, my friend had the surgery the same day same Doc. and has a hard time getting down 4 oz.

I hope the full liq. will fill me up more.

Have been walking about 4 hrs a day.

Doc. said I will have my first fill on 1-12-10.

Have not got sick at all... yet.

Be Safe all !! :rolleyes2:

Thank you GOD!! Today was a good day!!! I was able to get myself out of my HIGH bed this morning. I had an entire Jello, boost, and plenty of Water today. I only had 2 doses of pain meds since I woke up. Mainly due to me trying to have a BM. I know TMI. I have really had a very pleasant day. So just like the others who stated before IT GETS BETTER!!!

I am on my way fellow bandsters. :rolleyes2:

Just wondering about approvals. Has everyone heard if they are approved. My date is the 22nd but I haven't heard yet. I emailed the insurance coordinator today and she said she should hear today but then never heard back from her.

I don't think I will be able to breathe until I know I am approved.

Is there anyone else still waiting?

Hi All,

I was banded yesterday, Dec. 11 and just wanted to share my experience like those of you before me did - it really helped me, so I thought I'd try to pass that along.. :rolleyes2:

The surgery itself went great from what they tell me, no complications. I did have a strange effect from the anesthesia - as I was waking up I felt almost panicky, like I wanted to rip everything they had "hooked up" to me and run out of the hospital! I was jittery and feeling like i wanted to jump out of my skin, but at the same time extremely groggy. Never experienced anything quite like that before, but the nurses tell me that it does happen sometimes. As I woke up, that feeling subsided, but it took about 2 hours before I was feeling normal.

I had very little pain at first and didn't take anything until I got home - it definitely got worse over the evening yesterday, but this morning it actually feels a little better. I don't really have much gas pain right now, but I do feel pressure that is a little uncomfortable, but nothing unmanageable.

I had a hard time with the walking yesterday, because as soon as I stood up I was hit with a strong wave of nausea and felt like I might die! lol! As long as I was sitting or laying down, I had none, so getting up was a challenge. That has definitely subsided today as well so I'm hoping to get up more.

Good luck to everyone being banded later this month. You can do it :w00t:

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
