Just got banded on Monday

Recommended Posts

what were you expecting from major surgery? As "inevasive" as the lap band is, anything that requires anesthesia is "major surgery".

At the risk of sounding blunt and ugly, I have to agree with Marimaru. Although I haven't been banded yet, I have had other non-invasive, day surgeries. Sure I felt cruddy for a few days immediately thereafter, but the long-term benefits vastly outweighed the short-term pains.

I've read all the good and bad about banding, and I still can't wait to be banded!

I hope you feel differently once you've recovered. I also agree that you may want to consider a different doctor for your follow up care.

God Bless and good luck!

Glo, I think a lot of us kind of freaked out when we woke up. I still wake up from time to time wondering about this thing around my belly. I'm really thankful for your thread though, because it allows new people to get a perspective on some of the negative things that can be associated with the band.

I wish I could be there to hold your hand, because you seem to have a lot of anxiety over your decision. You're going to have to trust us though, that if you remain compliant, the weight will start coming off, and that's what you wanted, right?

As far as not being mentally prepared, I think it's a shame that so many people have this surgery without spending a few weeks here at LBT first. There's so much to learn with the band and new lifestyle. Doctors will tell you this and that, but the real stuff is right here at this message board. Anyone else that's new and considering the band should just keep reading and reading and asking tons of questions before getting banded. It's a huge, huge decision, a gamble, a chance... and hope.

Hang in there. I hope we see a happier Glo soon.

I hope I didn't just lose all of that, hit a button by mistake. I was saying, I think that my surgeons office should have called me the day after surgery to say "are you ok, how do you feel, can we answer any questions for you". They didn't. Anyway, I got up today, took a very hot shower, washed my hair, and boy did I feel better. And to my surprise I have lost 10 pounds. Thank you all for your support, it's going to be a long hard journey but I will succeed. God Bless

Glo, you are going to be fabulous! From your first post here till this last one, we can already see a huge improvement. Just think, it gets better every day. I'm glad to see you feeling better. Yes, your surgeons should have cared more, but not all of us were lucky enough to get caring surgeons. You win some, you lose some. It's all a crap shoot.

hi i was banded 2 days ago....29th sept and i know exactly wot you going thru....it is very painful, the gurgling noises weird...but to me that just indicates Fluid is getting thru my system be it as annoying as it is.....i also get burning pain up to my sternum but have sipped on some anti acid liquid and that helps slightly....havent eaten any food for near on 4 days now and i honestly dont feel hungry. just taken some liquids and finding out which ones seem easier....(forget v8 vegi juice with Tomato that an oucher) i know the first week or so gonna be the worse....man im just grateful i woke up out of the anesthetic....that was my biggest fear....and boy did i pray...and im not much for praying but some one listened to me haahah....

you just gotta think of the longer term picture, wot made you want to do this in the first place, for me it was to be around to annoy as many people as possible for longer hahaha no seriously i have a little boy and i dont want him to grow up without his mumma ...so the weight has to go....

just think of it like a painful marriage...once ya get rid of the pain ya fine ahahahahahaah

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
