Slow Losers - Unite!

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I was banded a couple of years ago, lost 40 lbs and then gained it all back. I was severly depresed for months, thought I made a big mistake. I had my fill taken out because it was too much. For awhile, I didn't want to have any put back in - I thought it just wouldn't work for me. During this time, I guess I tried to do some serious soul searching. I've always been overweight and struggled with emotional eating. When I had the surgery, I did not have a plan on how I would deal with the cravings and strong desire to eat - they would still be there. I thought once I lost weight, I would not allow myself to gain it back. I was wrong.

The last couple of months I guess I accepted that I would have to work at this the rest of my life. I would have to incorporate healthy living into my life everyday. I would need to walk, eat healthy, record what I eat aim to do this everyday. I know that is not possible for me, but that is what I work towards and I'm working on not beating myself up too much when I don't acheive it.

I started to get motivated, so I started my own run/walk group. I joined ww just so I would have a program to follow and meetings to go to where I can get support. I just started following the Beck Diet Solution - How to think like a Thin Person. Its not a diet but daily activities you do to start to change your behavior. Its a great book.

However, for the last couple of weeks I'm struggling with too much fill. I'm having a hard time eating healthy food and I'm once again turning to unhealthy food that will go down easily and make me feel better (for about 1 minute). It is so frustrating, I do have a doctor's appt on Monday. I'm hoping nothing is wrong as I had my last fill several months ago and now I'm too restricted. I plan to have some of my fill taken out. Of course, I worry that if they take out some of my fill I will gain weight back because I can eat more. I don't want lose my motivation!

I really want to start a yahoo group for others like me who have the band, but do struggle or lose weight slowly. I need the support and want to give support to others. We would follow the beck diet solution and post daily to the board. Also, to be able to send ims to someone in the group when you are really struggling and need to talk to. Like I said, I do go to ww, but I just don't feel like I can talk about this stuff with ww members. I really need to talk to others who know what I'm going through. If you are interested, please send me an email marilync1266@yahoo.com

Marilyn, what is the beck diet solution? I am not familiar with it.

Hi there, its a book that helps you make behavioral changes. I've attached a copy of the 1st chapter (pdf) to this message.

I started an online yahoo group if anyone is interested.

Marilyn, I don't want anyone of us to feel alone. That is what this thread is all about. I have only lost 35 lbs since March and gained back 5lb. The doctor did a barium swallow to see if everything was ok and it is. They think I just don't have enough fill. So the gave me another .2cc yesterday, will see. Yes I get very discourged and wonder if I did the right thing in getting the band. But I know if I hadn't gotten the band I would be even heavier than I am right now. I also understand the feeling of being a loser, with every watching and asking "how much have you lost". So this thread is a great place to express thoses feeling, and no one is going to judge anyone.

something like this is exactly what I have been looking for. I will soon join your team on yahoo too.

I will be purchasing this book today....!

thanks so much...it means a great deal. I am being honest with myself and know that I have to fix my mental thoughts as well to have longterm sucess after getting banded.

glad i am not alone!

I had my Band Dec 15th 06. I didnt lose anything till probably around May 07. Started out in the 160's, now at 121.5. Haven't lost anything in a while, and my goal weight is 110. I am restricted, and dealing with the PB, but frustrated about lack of weight losss progress. Everyone else seems to be losing so much more....it sucks! I am just under 5 ft tall so if the starting weight seems low, it was alot for my body type.

farrellduggan,

You're within about 10 lbs of your goal... I think you should change your mindset a little bit. At this point, you're kind of like the average person with 10 or 15 lbs to deal with, you know?

It is frustrating to be a slow loser, but I know darn good and well when I sabotage myself. I have a slow metabolism and I can lose slowly if I exercise and eat right. I can not lose anything and just maintain if I eat any sugar.

thanks Marilyn, I will read that today. Just hang in there! Things can be incredibly tough but no matter how slow the weight loss is, you know as well as I do that without the band, we would all be heavier by now and would of continued to try diets and failed.

Just a heads up. Oprah is doing a show today 12/7 regarding WLS and addiction swapping. I believe it is a rerun.

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
