Uncomfortable feeling in chest

Recommended Posts

Hi all! I was banded on 9/29. Surgery went well but I have a tight almost miserable feeling in my chest.:( Almost like something is stuck but I've been on Clear Liquids so that isn't possible. When I swallow it feels like it goes right around the lump. Is this my band I am feeling? Does it eventually go away? Has anyone else felt this? Thx!:smile2:

My guess is it is gas from swallowing trapped in your pouch and your esophagus. I don't know why, but ever since surgery I have been swallowing more air and it can feel pretty uncomfortable when it builds up, and it is just as you've described. Try a little baking soda in Water and see if that helps (instructions on the box). Hope you feel better soon, and alhtough it feels crappy, I am sure there is nothing to worry about.

Hi,

I was just looking to find out how long it takes the Co2 to rid the body. Most articles say 48 hrs. I still cannot belch or burp...and have that feeling in my upper shoulder area. I was banded on 9/26. Hope this helps. Let me know.

Walk, Walk, Walk!!! I had the same thing for about 10 to 12 days after being banded. Walking really helped me to release the gas and don't drink anything too fast it makes it worse. It will get better with time.:(

I agree about the walking. Not only does it help with the gas feeling but it also is very useful in preventing blood clots. I can't tell you how many times I've walked up and down my street trying to burp or (gasp!) fart...I was banded September 30th, and most of my gas pain is gone. I hope this helps!

Hi, sadly I had the shoulder pains for about 5 weeks, but they did go away and it was so lovely when they did! The lump in your chest is just swelling, and will definitely go away. Sometimes after a fill I have that for a few days too. Hang in there, and welcome to the wonderful world of the best thing ever!!!

I was banded Sept 30 and have the same issues. Something is not allowingme to eat. So far I've had 2 TBLS of chicken broth, 1 SF popscile and a few sips of Water. Everything wants to come back up and causes very, very bad pains. I'm assuming time will answer the issue. My shoulders also hurt. What is that all about? Your help appreciated. Carolyn

ok this is my story.....i had my surgery aug 18 and for two weeks afterwards i had chest pains but the doctor said it was normal it was prolly just swelling around the band. well this past sunday i woke in the wrst pain in my chest... i went to the local er and they did all kinds of test everything came back normal. i went to my surgery he did a unfill saying it would be instant relief but it wasnt they did a upper gi and everything went down good...so they did a scope down my throat yesterday and the lower part of my stomach is VERY swollen and when i look at my stomach it is noticably swollen under my left boob. the doctors have no idea whats wrong or what it causing it.....im waiting for bloodwork to come back so see what the next step is....this may not have any to do with what u hav but i just dont wont u to blow it off like i did the first time and end up like me....i have never been in sooo much pain as i have been this past week...i couldnt even get Water to go down so u can imagine how dehydrated i am...just dont blow it off listen to ur body i will from now on....i really hope its nothing but just a lil discomfort and i hope u feel better.

I have the same tightness on my Left side, shoulder... I'm told it's gas (air from inflation of surgery) and then I also have the ugh, TIGHT discomfort when I stand up to talk around, just only on the right side, I'm assuming would be my port? My hubby's bringing me some gas x home from work, and hopefully that will help. Is this all normal?

I too was banded 9/29 and have pain in my chest. I thought it was due to hiatal hernia repair. Reading all these posts, maybe its the band. Hmmm? The gas pains are getting worse not better. Frustrated and hurting! Hugs girlie!!

Ambraberger, I'm also a Sept 30th bander and still in pain. I can sleep on my back, but the gas, swelling, etc. is still bad. Plus I have bad headaches. Port still sore, but that is expected. I have had very little of anything. Every drop of liquid is uncomfortable. The thought of food is horrible. I'm assuming this will change soon - I hope. It's great to hear from others that our pass this stage. You know there is light at the end of this tunnel. Take care and good luck. We'll be happy losers soon!!

In the bands, Carolyn

Hi everyone! Thanks for your posts! I did call the Dr. and he wanted to see me. I went into his office this a.m. and he removed 1.2cc's from the band. I got a little bit of relief and can at least take a deep breath now. I still feel something in my chest but sounds like this is normal. :w00t: Now my port site is very sore from the Dr. having to access it for a slight unfill. Geesh...good luck to everyone else!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
