Am I crazy?

Recommended Posts

I've had 2 fills, and am at 4.5cc's in my 10 cc band. I think i'm ready for another fill, but I just had one 2 weeks ago. I feel like if I go back for a fill so soon that they will think i'm a failure. Am I crazy to think this? Anyone else feel the same way?

You're not a failure - you just want proper restriction - sometimes it can take many fills to get there. I've heard that some fills kick in up to 3 weeks after the fill so maybe they make you wait that long just to make sure. With my fills I know in a week or so (once the swelling goes down) whether I've got restriction.

Good luck - hope your restriction comes soon

Just thought I'd add - I got my 3rd fill on Mon taking me to 9ml in 10ml band - hopefully this will be the sweet spot for me - was at 7ml before that and had no restriction. Everyone's different though - you might get there sooner.

I have also had 2 fills so far. I was banded on 11/5/07. First fill was 1/18/08 and second fill was 1-week later on 1/25/08. I think I am getting there. I have noticied that I need to eat and chew more. However, I can still eat that same portion size as I normally did. I am going in for a third fill next week. I ahve a 14cc band with 3cc in the first time and 2cc in the second time. I also waited for a week just to see if the restriction would kick in. In my case, it did not. I feel like I am always hungry so I at this point I am looking to get som good restriction. My weight loss is little to none so I am feeling frustrated over this whole process. I guess we just have to go for another fill and hope that this is the one that will hit our sweet spot.

Good luck and let me know how you make out if you go for a third fill.

YOU ARE NORMAL!!! Two fills is not a lot, and only YOU know if you are feeling restriction. This is a TOOL so use your tool and get another fill. After two weeks, most docs will know you've given it a try and it's just not enough. I'd say go for it!!! I got an unfill and am on my way back up. I got my second fill last Monday and know already I need another fill...I'm going back next week to get one! I say call and make the appt!!!!

Needing a fill does not make you a failure. It has nothing to do with how

'good' you are or how 'bad' you are. It is totally dependant on your physiology and every single person is different. (we just discussed this at our last support meeting so I am on my soapbox!!!) Everyone needs a different level to reach their sweet spot. I have 6.5 ccs in a 10 cc band after four fills and I need another fill- I feel I'm almost there but not quite. You know if you are getting the maximum benefit from your band and you are being a wise patient to get how ever many fills you need to get the results you deserve. Don't feel bad at all. Get another fill!!! We aren't supposed to be suffering with feelings of starvation just to show how 'good' we are! We are supposed to be using this tool to help us and so if you need more help go for it. My doctor allows us to have fills every ten days if we need them (and if they deem them necessary - if you are losing five pounds a week you aren't getting a fill!) Hopefully this helped.

I too have a 14ml band and got another fill last night bringing up to 41/2ml..(still not quite sure I am there yet) and he had me drink a glass of Water there was no problem..so he is going on vacation for two weeks and wants me to hang in at where I am..I too feel like a failure when I see ppl on here that were banded in nov. 07 with me or even later and have lost more ..my scale only 12-15lbs depending on the day but his 24 so we will go with that...

so trying lo carb, even though he told me not to diet just eat better but doing the best I can..but I swear since getting banded my mind has done the opposite and guess I am just expecting it to do all the work I am walking but not consistantly so that is changing since yesterday as well as my water intake..been praying about it and going to give it my best attempt to do my part now to meet my band in the middle...whoever says this is the easy way out can kiss it..we have to work hard and be proud of ourselves..we will get there, I bet all the fantastic losers on this sight felt hopeless as some point to right?! I just have to fight the head hunger and habit snacking which is the hardest for me b/c I can be saying no in my mind but still reaching and eating it...

...best to you all

thanks for all your responses... I would have come back sooner, but I didn't get any email notices saying that people had responded to this thread. I called the nurse today to ask what she thinks... I'll keep you all posted. Thanks so much for the encouragement.

Don't be too discouraged. I was banded on 12/3/07 and have had 5 fills. The first one 1/4/08, second 1/11, third 1/15, fourth 1/18 and fifth 1/25 and they still don't have my "sweet spot". I feel like I eat too much, but the doctor tried to fill my band tighter and I threw up Water. I have a small band 10 cc. and my fills are now up to 2.4 cc with the maximum being 4 cc. He tried to go to 2.7 cc and that is when I got sick. I'm waiting now for at least 4 weeks and then he will do the x-ray fill again to see what is going on. He said sometimes it takes a few trys until he finds the right fill. So like you, I'm still searching for it. But...I'm still losing 1-2 lbs. per week, so I can't complain. I believe its what you eat that truly makes a difference. I now only eat baked or broiled foods. No more fried, no bread, no Pasta, and no sweets unless they are sugar free. Check out the recipie section here you will find a lot of good foods.

Best of luck.

Banded 12/3/08

Weight loss 31 lbs. as of today

Hi all, I was banded 1/11/08 and got my first fill today. I have a 10cc band and he put 4cc-s in today. I was able to eat a little afterwards, but I haven't felt hungry for the past few hours. But it's encouraging to know that it is NOT our fault for not feeling restriction. I guess guilt has been engraved in our brains and we gotta erradicate that.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
