Bad habits before and after WLS

  • Popular Post

I was able to break a lot of bad habits after WLS but I've developed new ones along the way. I'll share some of mine and I'm keen to hear yours too.

Some of the Bad habits before WLS:

1. Spending a lot of money on junk food (fast food, potatoes chips, chocolate etc) specially when I'm at work.

2. Procrastination when it comes to exercising and doing something about my weight. I've reached a stage where I've decided to just let myself go and do nothing about it

3. Avoiding social gatherings if I knew that photos will taken or if it involves any sort of physical activity

4. Eating before going to bed and while watching TV

I'm glad to report that I've broken all of the above and I couldn't be happier.

Bad (not necessarily) habits after WLS

1. Spending a lot of money on new clothes. I can't resist buying new clothes if it fits or I know it will fit me in a month time or so. Yesterday I went to the mall to buy tomatoes from the supermarket and ended up buying 2 polo shirts, 1 shirt and new jeans ?. I got the tomatoes of course.

2. I hate looking at old photos of me and I really don't like the way I looked in those. I didn't have this feeling before.

3. I take a lot of selfies and photos of myself now haha. I guess I'm making up for past time

4. I'm not telling people the whole truth when asked how I lost the weight. I only tell them about diet and exercise and even show them my latest cycling records but nothing about the WLS. If only told a handful of people about my WLS because I thought they could benefit from one. One of my friends is planning his WLS next month.

5. I don't like how certain parts of my body look after losing a lot of weight (I don't hate tho) like my armpits which have turned into caves, the loose skins on my belly, my scars. I guess I'm a bit self conscious about those.

My surgery is not until the 12th but I have plenty of bad habits before. 1. Boredom eating is my biggest issue. 2. Using food to show love. My family has never been the "I love you" type

I love thrift/second hand shopping- you can find some great deals and you are almost guaranteed not to see yourself coming and going. My daughter loves it too, and we have fun shopping for little hidden gems.

I volunteer in a charity shop one day a week. Its great because I can always find something to take with me to gift and always leave with a 'bargain'. Its a win win for everyone

Summerseeker- that does sound lovely!

My surgery is not until the 12th but I have plenty of bad habits before.

1. Boredom eating is my biggest issue.

2. Using food to show love. My family has never been the "I love you" type so I grew up on food celebration and over endulgence to make up for the lack of affection. My mom would give me entire banana cream pies as my breakfast when I was little. Now I do the same. When anyone comes over I make a huge dinner with enough to eat on for 2 days.

3. Making jokes about me being fat before anyone else can. It's my super shield.

4. Going through depressive states where I won't eat for days but then also going thru them where its all I want to do.

5. Having a fear that after surgery I will gain my weight back.

6. Wearing sweatpants and black shirts everyday (literally wearing that right now).

7. Blaming my farts on the dog.

8. Having to not carry cash so I can't sneak thru the drive thru without my wife knowing.

I could do this all night but I think this list will do.

I hope all goes well with the surgery. I can relate to a lot of items on your list. Hopefully these will soon be replaced with healthy and good habits after WLS. You got this!

I think you'll find that the surgery will resolve most of these habits... except #7. Now, I produce more gas than a refinery.

I used to have this issue as well but thankfully it is gone now. I'm 18 months post WLS.

im with u for ur entire list of post-wls habits, with the exception of this one above ??.

I actually LOVE looking at old photos of big me now that im not big anymore. It was when i was still big that i didn't like looking at them.

Bad habits

Before... holding in burps and gas because it wasn't ladylike. To my discomfort.

After... letting it loose to ease my discomfort.

Before...wearing all black to disguise my size.

After...wearing all black because I think it's chic.

Before... picking up fast food every Friday night.

After....picking up fast food every Friday night. (Bariatric friendly)
