Hi everyone! I’m having major problems with mass hair shedding. My doctor told me that’s normal around this time as I’m about 6 months post op. Has anyone been through this? If so, is there anything to be done? Like maybe supplements or hair care products for Hair growth. Thanks!

I dealt with pretty aggressive Hair loss but it's stopped! I now lose nearly nothing. I just take my Multivitamin & take 2 calcium citrate Vitamins each day. However stopping the hair loss came with time. Unfortunately for now you just have to wait it out. Just keep up with your vitamins, Protein & the hair loss will eventually stop.

Its very scary but it does stop. Lots of us cut our hair really short to hide the loss. I dont believe there are any products that help with Hair loss. I dont know if its my age but I have not gained any thickness back yet but I love that I dont have to spend hours dealing with my long hair any more

most of us have been through that. It lasts for about three months, and then the hair will grown back It's due to the trauma of the surgery (actually, Hair loss can be a side effect of any major surgery - as well as other stressful physical events like childbirth), plus the very low calorie intake we have for the first few months post-surgery (which is why I think we see it more after bariatric surgery than other major surgeries - because it's paired with the very low calorie intake. A double whammy). There's nothing that will stop it - that process began back when you had your surgery. It'll stop and the hair will grow back, though.

We were advised to take our Vitamins and make sure we met out Protein goal. We were told we can take Biotin or the hair and nail supplement to help with new growth but nothing can help stop it.

I take collagen and a hair-skin-nails supplement every morning. While I don't think it slowed down the Hair loss, my hair was quite thin before that and it's grown back thick and curly, much healthier than it was before I lost weight.

Most of us have been where you are now. Hair loss is common with weight loss (& during pregnancy & stressful periods too) . Your natural hair loss cycle has been accelerated as a stress reaction to the surgery, weight loss, hormonal changes, etc. The hair you are losing you would have lost anyway but over a longer time period. That hair is dead so you can’t save it. Your new hair is still growing though at it’s usual rate. supplements won’t help your dead hair but may make your new growth stronger. Yes, three months is generally how long it lasts +/-. Hair grows slowly & you don’t usually notice your new growth coming in but a couple of months after you stop losing your new hair may be long enough for you to start to notice it (short fluffy strands)

I had Roux-en-Y surgery Nov 2, 2022 and about a month ago I started losing LOTS of hair but that is about on course for me. It happens about 4 months after ever surgery or if I run a fever of 104. I’’be added a Bariatric Fusion Vitamin (purchased on Amazon) specifically made for hair, nails and the like. You can also add Biotin to your diet. And what they say is true - my hair has always come back after a few months. Im just so glad au have very thick hair. (at least I did pre-surgery)

I have had 3 cycles of really noticeable Hair loss since my sleeve 16+ months ago. It's finally (I hope!) growing back. I suspect it won't be as thick as it once was but I am totally OK with that. By the time it's falling out the new hair is already growing. I have never seen any decent evidence that any supplement makes any difference. In the same way the people talk about 'breaking' a stall by twiddling with Protein and fluids and exercise and goodness knows that else, I think that people might attribute the regrowth to whatever supplement they were taking at the time whereas really it was just gonna grow back anyway. Human nature.

The Hair loss was scary. I can now see 3 inches of new Hair growth. My surgery was in 11/2021. My hair was everywhere. I was afraid it wasn’t going to grow back. I took plenty of Vitamins. I don’t think you can do anything to stop it, so save your money and take your regular Bariatric vitamins.

I’m going through the same thing. I am taking an extra hair skin and nails supplement and making sure I hit my Protein goals. I’ve also started using Nioxin - a hair regrowth Shampoo, conditioner, scalp treatment set. A family member of mine used it when they had Hair loss from chemo. It’s hard to say whether or not it works because I wouldn’t know otherwise but I’m hoping it’s doing something!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
