Did Anyone Pre-Med The Day of Surgery?

Recommended Posts

Did anyone pre-med prior to surgery (like the day of)?

I have anxiety, which was exacerbated pre-surgery. I asked if I could take something prior to going to the hospital, but the doctor said I needed to be able to sign an informed consent. I didn't say I was going to take a horse tranquilizer! I was talking about taking a prescribed med from my doctor that doesn't interfere with my cognitive ability.

I wanted a pre med every time I have had surgery. I worry about everything. I never, ever did get one for what ever reason they had. This time I was so ready for the surgery, I almost ran to the theatre. I had a 3 week pre op diet and the end of it couldn't come soon enough. I was fine. I hope you will be too

I spoke to the anesthesiologist prior to surgery and she gave me something for my anxiety and also took care to help bring me out gently, as I have a tendency to sort of flip out. She did a great job and the whole experience was a breeze. I would STRONGLY suggest not going against your doctor, as it could jeopardize your surgery, but definitely bring it up again, even up to the day of if necessary.

If your doctor is just worried about the informed consent perhaps you can sign that and then take something. Although at that point you may as well just wait on whatever the anesthesiologist will give you. Either way I would get the okay because it could interfere with your anesthesia.

I was extremely anxious before surgery, so the anesthesiologist (at my consult) suggested a Xanax the night before. I never had taken it before, so the surgeon's office prescribed a miniscule amount. It helped so much, even the next morning and I was cognitively fine.

Does your physician's office have a PA or someone similar you can talk to and explain this that this is a regular prescription used to control anxiety? Perhaps they can run the trap lines with your surgeon and/or check with anesthesia. Obviously don't take anything without their ok, but it's not good going into surgery with high anxiety, either.

I will be having my op on the 9th of this month a few days away. When I saw my surgeon I mentioned this to him and he called the anesthesiologist leaving a message to give me a pre med. Anxiety bites at me too. Hope everything goes well for you.

I was calm up to the point where they were wheeling me down. Once I was in the holding area my mind was racing with crazy thoughts. Then they came to get me for surgery, once I was wheeled into the operating room I said oh wow there sure is alot of machinery in here. The nurses said yes there is. Then I saw the table I was to be on and I said uuhhh is that the table I need to be on they said yes and I said oh boy its pretty narrow and higher in the air. I was told dont worry we will lift you. My reply was Im so sorry you have to lift my fat self up. No worries I was told we'll just lift you with the handles on the lift your laying on. The anesthesiologist was behind me the whole time on the ride down once I apologized for the nurses having to left me, the anesthesiologist must have zapped me with meds in my IV as I have no memory after I made that comment until I woke up in recovery saying I didnt feel well lol

Thanks everyone. I have no intent on going against the surgeon's advice. Just wondering what other's had experienced. I will ask him again.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
