Hello all. I am two weeks post op. My surgeon combines the full liquid and puree stage. He said at week 3 I can start soft foods.

I love yogurt now. I found a no sugar added 25g Protein yogurt. I eat half for Breakfast with my meds and chewable Vitamin since it had Iron and iron on a stomach with no food will make you nauseated. So there's 25g of protein. I drink enough Water cause I loooove water so that's not an issue.

The Issue is I am not hitting the protein req. I've never liked Protein Shakes, they've always tastes bad. Since the surgery though Protein shakes make me nauseated just thinking about one. I tried today to force one down. Three sips in I was on the verge of vomiting and 10 minutes later was dry heaving. The thought of the shakes make me almost vomit. Idk what to do here. Even protein powders have the same effect. I tried the protein Soups too same effect. I don't think my body tolerates that kind of protein.

What do I eat?

I tried a scrambled egg (pureed even further) it went down ok but I don't really like eggs and they're only 6g of protein.

Also I still can't eat much at a time. I think I max out at 3 oz of yogurt. I've been subsisting on yogurt mainly. I tried tuna as well (made a tuna salad) tolerated that like a champ. Issue with canned tuna is you WILL get mercury poisoning from it. Three cans in a week can cause mercury poisoning. I got some expensive canned tuna that SAYS it's been mercury tested to be within 0.1 part per million and a can is 40g of protein.

Since they want you to not drink water 30 before or after eating I'm also thirsty. I always want to drink water. I always have this is not new post op, I've always been this way. It's like torture not drinking water.

So mainly I'm asking what can I eat to help with protein?

Any tips on helping with the water issue?

I just don't know what to do. I'm tired of being nauseated all the time.

Are you taking a PPI? Sometimes the excess acid can cause nausea. Also surgeons often prescribe anti-nausea meds for those experiencing prolonged nausea.

I like Fairlife Protein Drinks. I find they're less sweet and artificial tasting than the others I've tried. Also there's clear Protein drinks like Protein2o, Isopure clear protein in fruit flavors, Gatorade also makes one that is sugar free and has protein. So with these you'll get fluids and protein at the same time. Isopure also makes an unflavored Protein Powder that you can add to foods like Soups or drinks.

Could you swap the tuna for chicken and make chicken salad? If you like spicy things, you could make a lower fat version of buffalo chicken dip with fat free cream cheese and use the hidden valley ranch packet instead of bottled dressing along with canned chicken and hot sauce.

I've tried all of those Proteins. They all have the same issue. Canned chicken is disgusting to me. I can't get over the texture sadly.

What about making fresh chicken breast for salad or other recipes? I never use canned chicken either. I find the texture is gross as well, so I always make my own for recipes.

Ground beef? You could add ground beef to something like Ricotta Bake, for a modified version.

In the Uk the Docs here are not all on the same Protein Shake page. Mine hates them and has me drinking skimmed milk. 8 ounces = 8 grams of Protein. You can make Peanut Butter [ 2tbsp = 7 grams of protein ] and banana shakes with it. Win win. 1 ounce of hard cheese = 7 grams of protein. I cut it into tiny slivers and chewed this deliciousness slowly. We have supermarkets that sell good quality Bolognese sauce, good on the protein count and easy to digest as the beef is really tender. I was allowed to eat melba toast as it was really crisp and disappeared on my tongue. I had this with egg mashed with mayo and tuna mashed well with mayo. Pate is good on this too. My favorite is crab pate. I can manage 3 tiny melba toasts and they are only 39 calories for the 3. Just keep trying foods. I have only just about mastered chicken thighs at almost 5 months. Salmon is still a no go area. Hummus is good protein but I hate the taste now. Good luck trying foods, it is all a bit boring till you get to proper food

Well it's not completely fat free, I guess it's more like reduced fat. Philly Neufchatel cheese. It says 1/3 less fat.

It seems like others have suggested everything I can think of except for the tuna pouches. Do they have mercury?? They are right next to the canned tuna. Also you could get rotisserie chicken to make chicken salad. I do this often to save prep time.

Any low quality tuna has mercury this mainly includes canned and pouched. There is a high quality mercury tested and controlled canned tuna but it's expensiiiiiiiive.

The rotisserie chicken is a great idea! It'll have nice flavor and I can mix the white and dark meat to even out dryness.

I never even thought of milk. I found a lactose free 2% ultra filtered milk that's got tons of protein! There's also a special k protein Cereal that's got 10g of protein and once you add the milk it's like 30g of protein per serving! Sadly I'm allergic to bananas :( but I do like Peanut Butter.

What do you eat the dip with tho? I can't imagine eating just the dip by itself honestly.

It probably didn’t sell because it didn’t taste very good. I can’t imagine cream cheese with no fat.

I would suggest you eat it with a spoon.

You're two weeks post op. It's too soon for veggies, chips and crackers aren't a good idea nutrition wise and I doubt they're on your approved foods list.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
