One week post-op — feeling hunger

Recommended Posts

I had VSG 8/31/21. So far so good, except I started feeling hunger yesterday. The surgeons said that VSG surgery removes the portion of the stomach that triggers hunger, so I’m very disappointed/worried. I’m hoping this “hunger” is actually just recovery pain that my brain is misreading as hunger. Anyone else feeling hungry one week post-VSG?

Are you taking stomach acid reducers? You aren't eating a lot of food right now and unless you are taking acid reducers there is a lot of excess acid, this can sometimes feel like being hungry.

Sometimes too when we are thirty we feel hungry, try sipping some fluids.

Supposedly you can tell the difference between real hunger and head hunger by what you crave. Real hunger you are hungry for anything But head hunger (or misinterpreted hunger) you will crave something specific. Usually something you shouldn’t have.

Great advice. Thanks, friends. The hunger I’m feeling is that kind of achey hollowness. I’m taking a scrip for the acid, but the fluids is a good idea. I’m keeping my fingers crossed. I’ll report back.

Also, not everyone has their hunger go away. Some people just find their hunger changes. At least from what I've read/heard. You still have a stomach and it still needs SOME food.

That’s distressing. I’m prepared emotionally/physically to limit my intake to 500 Kcal/day, but I won’t be able to achieve that if my body is crying out to be fed. The lack of hunger benefit is just as important to me as the smaller stomach.

I don’t think it’s very many people that still experience hunger immediately after the surgery I think it’s pretty rare. Almost everyone gets it back eventually but some say it’s a milder gentler version post surgery.

I am also a week out, 8/31/21 surgery. Relax for a bit! You will be fine. It is too early to feel restriction or decrease in hunger etc. your stomach is beat up right now with being pulled, cut, stapled and abused. What you are feeling is probably just the recovery process. Focus on drinking fluids and walking. There is a mental part of this journey which you may need to discuss with someone on what may be triggering the feelings you are having. Maybe it is something else that is making you think you are hungry? Also what helps me is hot Bone Broth which satisfies my “hunger’ and fills my sleeve. I started puréed foods today and cannot even eat a can of tuna, so it is not “hunger” in my view. Hang in there.

You have to learn to fill up on fluids, distract yourself and don’t eat every time you are “hungry”. Your previous statement about not being able to achieve what you plan if your body is crying out to be fed is already setting yourself up for failure. Take it one meal at a time, one day at a time. You can do this!

Thanks, Jaye. I’m just disappointed because the surgeon said that a primary benefit of VSG is removal of the portion of the stomach where the hunger hormone ghrelin is active— thus no hunger even with ultra-low calorie intake. The good news is that my hunger is quickly quelled with just a little food.

What did your dr say? Did they think you were explaining actual hunger or something else. I have felt what I think is head hunger since this all started. I just assume it’s head hunger since my hunger hormones are supposed to be all gone. That combined with the fact that I can eat much more than I am supposed to at every given point means this has still been quite a struggle for me. (I still WANT to eat all the time and I WANT to eat more than I am) but I am still losing and hoping that the thermostat lowering component (I think that’s what Dr Weiner called it) will still make it easier to keep it off this time. I am still losing slowly but surely.

I think I remember some on here saying that what they thought was hunger was acid production in the stomach. . Did your surgeon prescribe omaprazole? . I think I recall people saying that helped them. Also I agree with others that you may feel more restriction/ less hunger after you are further along. It could also be what people call head hunger- get your fluids in and continue with the plan. You will get used to it.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
