Feeling frustrated and sad

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery on 11/9. It was supposed to be a bypass but a lower hernia and scar tissue in my abdomen caused it to become a sleeve. Which is fine, but it wasn’t what I expected. I also had another hernia, hiatal, that he repaired. My doctor is hoping with that repair my horrible indigestion will be long gone and the sleeve will be a good fit, but if not he has already said he would revise it If I got the other hernia repaired first. My doctor is great, I’m not upset with him, but somehow having the plan changed makes me feel like I’m behind.

I lost 20 pounds over 2 weeks on the pre-op diet, but when I finally weighed myself today, well I’m at the same weight I was when I went I for surgery on Monday. I’m sure things will get moving along, I’m following the diet, Protein, and Fluid recommendations religiously, but I just feel a little deflated and defeated this evening. I know those feelings will pass, but I just needed to put into words that I’m just not feeling on point yet.

If I'm reading this right, you're just 5 days post-surgery? The number you see on the scale doesn't mean much right now. It's way too soon for you to be able to assess what kind of results you are getting. You're just starting to heal - you still have internal swelling (which means Water retention). Stay with your eating plan, give your body time to recover and R.E.L.A.X. This is more like a marathon than a sprint. I lost my weight over 18 months (and I'm still slowly losing). It won't happen overnight, but if you're diligent about following your plan, it WILL happen. Feel better. 🤗

Agree with the above! Your body is recovering and if you had IV's you are probably carrying some Water weight! Stay the course! HUGS!

You lost a lot of weight in the couple of weeks before the surgery, that coupled with the IV fluids and inflammation will make for a fairly low or no weight loss in the first week or so.

Just keep following your post op guidelines and keep up the fluids and it won't be too long before your efforts are reflected on the scales. Bearing in mind that at this point, scale weight is not as important as getting your fluids, Protein and developing new habits that will help you achieve your goal.

I agree with those comments above. After I had my sleeve surgery, I didn’t weigh myself for 2 weeks. Now, just once a week.

It would be disappointing to think you're heading toward one destination and end up in a different 'town'. I hope you are feeling better and obviously your Surgeon made the best choice for your situation. I had my surgery 11-4 and gained weight. I didn't see a net loss until yesterday morning. And it was a couple of lbs. Please try not to feel disheartened. You're doing all you can on your side- the weight Will come off! 🤗

Try staying off the scale and work on NSV Non scale victories, it helps, little things like remembering your Vitamins, or taking a relaxing nap or Walking outside for five minutes. What works for you the first few weeks are exhausting physically and mentally. It was three weeks be fore I could return to work for no more then 2 hours, it pissed me off I love my job, so have patience with you the weight will come offf, your body has been through something very traumatic, and you have a lot of adjusting to do. Just keep asking question and if in doubt talk to your surgical team. Good luck.

Thanks everyone, I know it is very early days!! I am a perfectionist in everything I choose to take on, this journey is no different, and changing gears unexpectedly definitely felt like a hiccup in a well laid plan. On top of being a perfectionist I am also a control freak, I love to control all variables that are within my ability to control and mold to generate the result that I want; so I now just have to redefine my plan, which may seem silly to so many, but it is just me. Thank you all for taking the time to respond to me. I feel much more ready to tackle everything today after a good sleep and some new planning:)

a lot of people gain weight from the IV fluids they get in the hospital. I've read posts of people gaining 10 or more lbs from it, to be honest. It does take a few days - or even a week - for it to work it's way out of your system. If you're following your clinic's food plan, the weight WILL start to drop off.

Horseshowmom, agree with other posters.... this sounds like weight retention. The IV fluids contain lots of sodium. Also your body is in shock. Encouraging you to stick with the plan; this will change eventually!

Oh that does sound very frustrating!! How much have you lost? Logically, you must be losing weight because you’re on a very calorie restrictive diet. I hope you just keep on doing the right things. Those pounds are probably dropping but Water weight is holding on snd covering the loss.

You are doing great. You just had surgery. The member that responded is precise in what she stated. Your Fluid retention is hard at work, swelling will take weeks to return to baseline. Your body has been traumatized, surgically, but trauma all the same. Your physiology needs time to calm down. Your weight will not be accurate, do not be concerned about the scale. Your body needs to heal and recover, this takes time. Success will follow you...no worries. Be patient with yourself & your body. Each person’s anatomy/ physiology is different. How quickly you heal is also different. Try not to make comparisons, something we all do. You will heal, recover and be amazed just how proficient the human body can be. Soon you will see the results of the surgery and see the rewards of your hard efforts. Congratulations! I wish you well - Grace

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
