The thought of a catheter.. scary!

Recommended Posts

Then why when I was in LPN school did we all have to learn? And in my state it's RN are the only ones permitted to start an IV but LPN can remove them if they have been.taught.

Notice that it's the guys that are scared of the catheter lol. Us ladies have dealt with far worse...child birth comes to mind.

Y'all cracked me up so much on this thread that I just had to go ahead and make an account and reply 😁

Hi, i'm Karen and i'm an over eater and hoping to have RNY the end of the year. My last hurdle will be finished next week and then off to insurance.

I've only had surgery once before and there was no catheter. I just found out that I might wake up with a catheter after this surgery and it's kind of got me worried. I've just heard scary stories in my life about the whole catheter experience. What was your experience and I'm wondering are catheters pretty common with this surgery? I was told, it depends on the surgeon. Probably just fear of the unknown but thanks in advance for your input.
At least it will go in after u r asleep! If its still in when you wake up, it will prob be removed once you are up and walking and can go pee under your own steam.

I agree 100%. My wife doesn't blink an eye when it comes to these things. I stress over going in for a routine exam. I have a commercial drivers license and dread having to renew my DOT physical every 2 years...LOL... Women spend their whole lives being poked and prodded by doctors and the like. My hat's off to you.

With all of my surgeries, not once have I been conscious for the insertion of a catheter. It's usually given in the OP room and removed before you get to recovery

Sill not as bad as being sutured without numbing. That happened to me, accidentally ripped out my stitches, they put them back in but said it was too soon to give me any numbing and I felt every needle insertion, yank and tug, all 15 of them. The distention and such of an urinary cath, No Big Deal!

I had a Foley for almost 24 hours after surgery. Honestly... I needed it. I was so out of it from the anesthesia that I dont know if I would have been coherent enough to get up and go to the bathroom or realize I even had the urge to go. Anesthesia hits me HARD. It was like that with my first csection.

I had one when I had my hysterectomy. I hated it as I felt like I needed to wee the whole time even with it in!

As a 23 year old female who has never given birth to another human I just wanted to chime in and say hell yes Im scared of a catheter.

It's nothing to be scared of...at the most is just uncomfortable...but honestly it's totally worth it not to have to get up to pee constantly lol. I know that we need to get up and move after surgery...but all that effort just to pee? No thank you lol.

It often gives that feeling. My Dad had surgery recently and he was constantly trying to get up to pee...he has dementia so he kept forgetting about the cath.

And your reflexive feeling , if something hurts or makes you v uncomfortable you try to get away from it. Has nothing to do with thinking processes, bless your Daddy's❤, he was doing only what felt right to him!

Yes, but I had to deal with the fallout when trying to explain that he has a catheter and really didn't need to get up to pee. He got so mad at me. He had just had surgery to repair a broken hip and shoulder so he couldn't get up regardless...but darnit he wanted up....bless him😊

My surgeon did not want to use catheters so he made sure that each patient went to the bathroom at least twice before surgery.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
