Hi all. I’m about 3 weeks post op. I’m on the puréed stage. I should be able to move to soft food in a week than regular food in two weeks.

I’m moving through the stages slowly because I experienced a partial bowel blockage and was in the hospital for a couple days. This was caused because I advanced my diet too quickly and tried to eat more advanced food than I was ready to (it was only a couple items.). So, I went back to the beginning and had to do Clear Liquids and Protein Shakes again.

You would have thought that this would teach me- and it did for awhile. I have not gone off plan until today. But I feel like I’ve been living on Protein shakes for months (counting pre-surgery). I’m hungry and just craving something besides refried Beans and protein shakes.

The big reveal- I ate two mini-muffins (chocolate chip) and a small piece of this vanilla bread we had left over from my daughters party.

I know this was stupid but I am just getting so tired of not having any real food and no carbs.

What do you do to stick to plan and avoid foods you shouldn’t have?

Remove them from your home.

Don't beat yourself up -- we all fall off the wagon from time to time. The most important thing is that you don't let it turn into "oh well I screwed up, might as well eat this whole cake." (I say this from experience!)

I have found that the best thing that keeps me on track is documenting everything I put in my mouth. If I eat it, it has to go into MyFitness Pal and I don't want to record that I'm eating junk -- even though I'm the only person that sees it. It keeps it more real and reminds me of what I'm supposed to be eating.

That said, can you mix up your diet a bit now that you're on purees? I ate a lot of pureed chicken, egg, and tuna salad during that stage. I would be sick to death of Beans and Protein Shakes, too!

Biggest thing, don't cave in. The ONLY person putting that food in your face is you. You control you. SO... control you!

Now, find something that's a healthy option that you can swap with whatever you are craving that will satisfy the craving. There are some amazing foods out there that you can eat that are WAY better for you than most of the junk that's out there. 3 ingredient Keto Cookies using nothing but bananas, cacao powder and raw Peanut Butter, super amazing fudgey cookies that are decently low in calories, have ZERO added sugars and pack in the Protein and nutrients that you just don't get from typical cookies.

You can either avoid or confront the foods. I confronted them. I legit stood in front of all the candy in the candy isle and was like... "screw you candy. You made me fat and unhappy and made me feel like crap. Sure you are tasty, but it's all just junk and I don't need you."

I used to eat a LOT of ice cream, now I eat a 1/4 or so of Halo Top, way better option.

You have to make this work. Do your best and only your best and it gets easier. If you fail or cave... that's fine, but, it's not. Don't beat yourself up... but don't make it "ok". Work with your surgery, not against it!

Good Luck!

I agree with @GreenTealael and @thatch. 1. You should remove all temptations if you can do that. 2. Don't beat yourself up over it, it will only make things worse overall.

During the pureed stage there are lots of things you can eat, I found that the Starkist tuna Creations were perfect because mostly mashed up already and flavored. I have found a love for cottage cheese again and Ricotta bakes add flavor and substance. Try thicker Soups and puree them. I also made Hungarian Zucchini stew and was able to puree it and add Protein Powder and it tasted as good as it would've prior to WLS.

I've also used Pinterest and even the forums on here to give me some ideas when I need a change.

I use to be a fast food eater and dreaded cooking so I had to adapt. There are a ton of recipes for healthy alternatives to what you’re craving if you must. Try that instead of depriving yourself. This way it will be incorporated into your long term life change.
Every time I weigh in each week it motivates me to stay on track. Try finding something positive that will help you stay strong! Good luck

Ingredients
  • 3 sprigs Dill, fresh - finely chopped, no stems if possible
  • 1 Onion, very small - diced or minced
  • 6 Zucchini squash - peeled and grated
  • 1 tbsp Flour (we have used coconut for Keto and real flour prior to keto)
  • 1 tbsp Salt (enough to cover zucchini)
  • 1/2 cup Sour Cream (optional)

Wash and peel the zucchini. Use a large holed grater to shred the zucchini

Put zucchini shreds in a small bowl, add salt - let it stand about an hour in refrigerator. Before cooking zucchini, squeeze the excess Water out.

To cook:
Using a Med / Large pot add the onion slices, cook till opaque. Add zucchini in pot, then barely cover the squash with water. Add chopped dill.

When the zucchini changes to a creamier color, it is done.

In a small bowl, flour with a enough water to disolve and make smooth

Add the flour to zucchini while stirring to avoid clumps until smooth.

If too thick, thin it out by adding 1 tbsp of sour cream, then one tbsp of the cooking liquid that you set aside. Repeat until the desired consistancy is acheived.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
